When Barcia rode the 450 last year he was a threat to Dungey in every moto, Alessi is a threat in one moto of ten..

From whence is this "unwrriten rule?"

This supposed "unwritten" top two big bike class idea didn't play out in 2000, 2001 (original picks), 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009

Hey, hey, hey there! Vital posters reserve the right to beat a topic to death. Moving on and discussing the actual race this weekend? Naw dawg, we need 3-4 more MXdN threads

Right Choice, Barcia is going to kill it on the 450. Remember he almost won a 450 national in the sand, had his Honda not given up when he was leading.

If you remember things correctly you will realize he was never in position to win the overall at Southwick last year. Dungey holeshot and won the first moto. Barcia came through a few riders into 3rd which was when his bike blew and DNF'd. RV gave Dungey a challenge near the end but Barcia was never close to the lead duo. He did win the second moto but a moto 1 DNF never leaves a rider in position to win an overall.

For some reason many think Barica was leading and I even heard Matthes repeat it recently on one of his podcasts so that may be why the myth has become so widespread.

Either way he will be good at the MXDN.

In another thread, BobbyM showed that Barcia has consistently, and at some races significantly faster than Alessi on both fastest laps and avg motos all season. He has not been as fast as either Baggett or Tomac (or Roczen or Musquin at some races), so the way I see it Alessi is the 5th pick at best. It doesnt matter at all he is 2nd in the 450s. Has Alessi done anything to suggest that he would be in 2nd if RV, CR22, DM18, TC41, etc were not hurt? Shit Bros, even Tommy Hahn would probably have been kicking the shit out of Alessi if he had not been hurt. I'm not an Alessi hater, I like the dude, but he does not deserve to even be in the discussion of being on the MXdN team, period. Sorry.

I would def agree Tomac and BB has shown another gear Barcia doesn't have. But for whatever reason he has beat Tomac plenty this season, not so much Blake. He's been super consistent, the best starter in the field, and mentally strong. He ripped at Washougal just a race ago! His first bad race of the yr, by my memory, so now he's a bad pick?

He's been the 4th-5th fastest US rider this season and he has done nothing to show me he would be better than 6th or 7th in the 450s if everyone was healthy. How many races has he been 20-30+ seconds behind RD at the finish? Where do you think he would be if RV, TC41, DM18, JS7, TH32 etc were healthy and racing? No disrespect to Alessi, but he is not a legit choice for MXdN.

And just to be clear, I'm not an Alessi hater. I think he is over performing this season outdoors considering the bike he is on and you can not doubt the guy is giving it 100%. Its nothing personal, he's just not fast enough.

I hope Barcia doesn't get his "ladies days" the weekend of the MXDN and have a crying hissy fit like he did in Supercross earlier in the year.

How soon we forget.

I think i might throw a fit to if i was leading a race and a lapped rider who i let ride and practice at my house all the time (vincent) takes my rear end out in a corner. Not Only costing him a lot of money but losing a streak.

Barcia is the best choice, and has race the 450 in the US and been at the front. He is also good in sand. Also MX3 isn't as competitive as MX1 so he should win the class. USA should win the team part easy enough.

Individually it will be harder but all three will be up there.
There isn't just a "team part" to this race. It is a team race period... moto wins are just for bragging rights.
I never buy that, its debatable as only 1 Moto gets discarded which means every single point in the other 5 counts so settling for 2,3 or 4 isn't the best option when a 1 (a win) could be had,you never know what will happen in the next race,a rider may have another bad ride or a DNF that you might have to count so for example a couple of 3rd places early on might not be enough if you see what I mean, maybe in the last Moto but I'm pretty sure a racer is a racer at the end of the day too

As for Barcia, for me its probably the right way to go

Other than RV I think Alessi can run with any 450 rider. There is no way that a non-factory rider is going to consistently run the pace of a factory bike and rider with all things considered equal. At Southwick, Dungey was riding at another level than any other rider and was clearly at least 2 seconds faster than Alessi. I remember several years ago Reed trying to run Windham's pace and couldn't do it. Reed also tried to run RC's and Stewart's pace and couldn't hang with them either. The one thing about Reed was that he was patient and let his confidence build up. Eventually, he had Windham easily covered and if he stayed healthy he would have had Stewart covered too. I like what Alessi has done this year. It must be frustrating knowing you can run with Dungey but with the amount of injuries Alessi has had over the last couple of years I like it that he had shown the patience that Reed had and isn't pushing himself to the point of another injury. That confidence will return. He also deserves a factory ride.
