I was curious if any of you have worn a neck brace (of any brand) and have decided to take it off, and if so, why?

I'm personally losing confidence in how effective they really are, versus injuries they might actually cause. The reason I have had this feeling to due to a crash I suffered the end of May. A fairly violent swap sent me high-siding, back first, into the ground. Something I would say wouldn't be a neck-breaker. Yet, since then (now 2 months later) I've been having problems with muscle spasms and pain in my neck. I did get X-rays. Nothing wrong there. I've currently been started on muscle relaxers for when it gets really tight and painful. Next step is an MRI if It doesn't settle.

I believe this all might be a result of me slamming into the ground back first and pushing the back table, that sticks out, into the back of my neck when I slammed. I've had crashed like this without a braces years ago, and never dealt with these issues after the fact.

By the way, I don't intend to start a neck brace witch hunt with this. Simply want to see if there are/were others in my position.

I wear one when I ride, and I have since the first Leatt came out.

My preference is to have one on every time I get on a bike. I've forgotten to put it on during practice sessions and rolled everything until I could get back to the pits and get it.

My 2 cents.

I wear mine every time I ride. I do think its better than not wearing one, but that's JMO.

I wore mine for 2 laps and it's been on the shelf every since. I have gotten a little use out of it though, my kids put it on our dog and let him run around the yard with it on. I wouldn't blame anyone for wearing one it's just not for me.

i wear one every time i ride. even my 110. but i do feel its a personal preference. me, i just feel very voulnarable and unsafe when i dont have my Leatt on. but i also feel if someone feels they are unsafe with it on, then dont wear one. this sport is very mental. and if a piece of equipment is messing with your head, then fix it.

Muscle spasms are real hard to get rid of. A physical therapist might be a better way to address the issue than muscle relaxant (the old treat the cause vs. treat the symptoms)

I've had some big crashes and zero neck injuries. I have to think my Leatt had something to do with that. I could be wrong, but I will wear it until there's substantial evidence to the contrary.

I shelved mine after about a year. I just feel too constricted wearing it. No matter what i did or how I adjusted it, I just rode really tight. Plus, when I raced the occasional enduro, it was impossible. I would be going down a steep hill and need to look up to see where I was going and the brace stopped me from seeing far enough ahead.

I wear one and probably always will. However, the OP needs to find a good chiropractor. I have the same issues from old injuries if I don't go to my chiro at least once a month or more...............

You need to find a good chiro.

Yes, there are good, average and bad chiros out there. For this sport a good one is worth gold. The brace is there to prevent a catastrophic injury. You may simply have some muscles that are jammed up still. A good chiro will sort it out ... without using drugs.

About a month after purchasing my first Leatt Brace, I had a pretty hard crash leaving me unconscious for 5 minutes and in hospital for a week with kidney damage (think my handlebar dug into my midrift). This is what my helmet looked like after:

I hit my head pretty hard to break the shell of my helmet, and I have no doubt in my mind that without wearing the Leatt brace I could have seriously injured myself, damaging neck and back vertebrae after landing on my head with such an impact.

I have worn my neck brace ever since I have got it, and don't even feel it on me any more. On occasion I forget to put it on, I feel naked!

I understand that there are maybe instances that the neck brace could cause an injury (as you could argue with 1 or 2 other bits of safety gear, not just in motocross) but I am certain that it prevents A LOT more.

I used to wear one regularly for years. It wasn't until this year that I actually noticed that it was limiting the normal range of motion my helmet would have without it, and was therefore affecting my riding. Once I took it off, the increase in comfort on the track was instant. In corners I could lay my bike over more and keep my head level, as well as keep my head looking ahead while in a standing attack position--as opposed to contorting my back to overcompensate. I sold my leatt a week later. I am still interested in trying other braces that might have a lower profile (e.g. AStars) to where it won't affect my head position as much, but in the meantime, I prefer not wearing one.

Thanks for some of the tips about the muscle spasm stuff, guys. I'll have to look into the PT or Chiropractor for sure. I've actually only taken the the pill for a few nights before bed so far. Although it actually has helped a lot, I can't take it more than that like they suggested (3 times a day), because that crap makes me too damn sleepy.

As far as the brace goes I'm thinking I might just try to ride without it and see how it feels. dehner47 makes a good point.

I have a feeling it would be tough without it since I've worn one since 2008, though. Plus there would always be the what-if if something bad did happen without it.

I think it's like anything. It's been a while since the last big injury at the pro level. People forget how much things like Ernie's crash shook them.

Some of you guys that feel restricted might want to try on some of the other brands / design and see if they offer enough adjustablity so you don't feel restricted. You might lessen the brace's effectiveness a little by adjusting it for more clearance but it would still probably be better than nothing.

I had the same experience. One day I forgot all my safety gear except a helmet and boots. Because it's a long way to go back home and really wanted to ride, I just rode without all protection. Normally you would ride very slow because you feel unsafe, but I rode like my hat was on fire! I don't know if I really was faster but it felt great! I felt "unleashed" ... Strange but true ...

Now I still ride with all my protection on, but I'm going to try it again ...

I had a bad crash and was knocked out for about 30 seconds. Some of you may remember it because I was on a TM 300mx. Remember my 4 stroke killer thread? My head went all the way back and it actually broke the back part of the leatt off. I had a sore neck and a torn knee and a few broken bones. I showed my doctor my helmet and my Leatt brace. He said I would have been paralyzed if I wasn't wearing it. I will never not wear a neck brace again.

I found that helmets have make a difference with the movement, when you buy a new helmet try it with your leatt on.

I had an arai and it didnt restrict me at all, I had full movement. I changed to a troy lee and i can't look fully up or down. It restricts me a bit but I wear it. But I see why people dont wear them.

Like alot of the others on here, I also would feel naked without it. Almost as bad as if I somehow forgot to put my helmet on.

I rode out of the pits a few weeks ago without my Leatt (plain forgot). On the track I felt completely liberated; it had been so long since I had ridden without it that I had forgotten what it felt like to ride without one and I have to say it felt good. Nontheless, I rode back to the pit and put it on for the next session.

I went over the bars about 10 years ago and lawn darted...wearing an old skool neck roll. Although I broke T8 in that crash and cracked my helmet nearly in half, my neck wasn't even sore. Everytime I weigh the freedom of that feeling on the track against the memory of that crash....the Leatt wins.

As a minor point - my little dude in my profile pic absolutely hated the smallest Leatt, so now he wears an alpinestars and loves it. Says he doesnt even notice it's on. If you dont like the way the Leatt feels - have a look at the Astars.

I ditched my neck brace years ago bro. Now I stopped wearing my helmet, if was really tight on my head and it made my hair all messed up. Once I crashed with my helmet on and got a concussion and I'm pretty sure it was the helmets fault.

I bought a Leatt brace when they first came out, and for a long time I couldn't even tell I was wearing it. I wore it religiously up until earlier this year, when I stopped because I started to feel that my chest protector interfered with it.

About 2 months ago one of my best friends had a crash and crushed his C4, and also cracked his C3 and C5 vertebrae. He owned a Leatt, but had only ever worn it once because he said it restricted his head movement too much. He is lucky, and suffered no cord damage, so will pretty much make a full recovery.
This was a bit of a wake up call for me, and I decided I would start wearing my Leatt again and bought some Leatt brand armour to better fit with it. However, every time I have been riding since then, I have stopped and taken the brace off because it now feels so restricting, even with the front and back parts adjusted right down. I want to wear it, but just don't feel I can anymore.

I used to wear an EVS neck roll before the Leatt came out. While wearing it I had a big crash and landed on my head. I was knocked out for a good few minutes and my neck was sore for a week or so after. I had it x-rayed, but it was just a sprain. This really scared me, and for the first time ever I seriously considered giving up riding. I have no idea whether the neck roll helped or not, but either way I think I was lucky.

The fact is no piece of equipment is going to protect you from every conceivable injury in every conceivable crash. It really has to be a personal decision based on what you believe and the best scientific/medical information available to you. Unfortunately, there is very little independent scientific/medical information on the effectiveness of neck protection for motocross riders out there.

To a certain extent at least, I believe the Leatt brace is a placebo. It makes people feel safer while doing something that is still potentially very dangerous. Reading about James Marshall and Ernesto Fonseca's injuries is what prompted me to start considering neck protection. At the time, those injuries scared me so much I didn't want to carry on riding without it. Whether I was actually any better off with the brace on is very difficult to say for certain, but it definitely made me feel safer.

It comes down to the numbers for me. It's very possible that your injury was caused/worsened by the brace, but I would bet in most cases it's a help. Unfortunately, there are always going to be anomalies. Like seat belts, which have also caused injuries but more often prevented them. Anyway, I've got no numbers to back any of this up, it's just how it seems to me.
8/1/2012 11:31pm
I always wear mine.

Haven't taken any serious diggers with it on but some crashes.

I personally would rather heal up from a broken collar bone than neck damage.
