Well before you guys draw a bead on DC's forehead, remember that the AMA is still the one making the rules according to Joe Bromley. Betting they were the ones restructuring the class for the CRF150, DC even alluded to that. DC pushed through a class for the two strokes, I can appreciate that. Might not be what I would want to see, but I'm not really involved in racing to any degree. Mostly just a longtime fan of the sport who doesn't like the direction it has taken.
Never a truer word Spoken,

Word is Mammoth may have to run a 3rd gate of 40 riders in the 2 stroke class next year, They had 2 full gates this year
Or maybe just maybe a 2 stroke day if the numbers go over that,
I will keep you updated Newman, that is one you should not miss.

I remember racing in the 80's and there'd be about 1000 racers at my local track, on a wet rainy day! Hell, the beginner class had to run two to three beginner classes cause of high turnout. Today the Beginner Class has maybe 20 to 25 guys on the starting line!Think it has alot to do with cost.... about $1500 for a good race bike then, compared to todays $8700.....
The problem is that the average income isn't the same 5 times as much. Until recently, I didn't realize that most local races just race age group with no A,B or C just age. So you have experts racing with novices. I don't claim to have any answers but low numbers in the 85's now don't bode well for racing 20 years from now.

Yes for sure.

That, and the cost of a 50 going from $799 to $5,000 hasn't helped bring new riders to the sport either..
That might be a valid point if there were not affordable options like the 50 limited and shaft/multi speed classes still being offered at both the local and LL level.

It is not going to hurt a 4-6 year old's chances of being the next RC, JS, RD, or AC 10 years down the road if they hone their skills on a $1200 bike. Anybody that ever saw JS ride a pw can attest to that.

Unfortunately those classes seem to be continuing a slow, agonizing death, and it will be a sad day when they are no more.

As far as the two stroke class, I said when they were talking about forming it, and I will say now, that it should be a 125 class for "C" riders.

Instead it is just like the "fourstroke" or collegeboy classes. Just another class that everybody from AC to RC can run as another option in case they have problems at the regional, don't feel that their chances are that good in a strong class, or are placed there by their support team to rack up another championship for OEM ads.

Local riders figured out very quickly who they would have to run against at LL's and never really got behind it.

Sure, it will have a full gate at LL's (what class wouldn't?) and some may try to build some excitment about it, but the potential of the class was missed completely.

I would think the last thing the biggest amateur national in the US needs is another C class. Those things bring nothing but drama. The problem with restricting age, cc, or skill is you continue to narrow what other classes the riders are eligible to even try qualifying in. Making it open leaves room for the class to develop into something instead of pigeon holing it to start with. I would even make it 300cc so guys can run their more exotic 2-strokes in other classes and be competitive against 450s off the start.

CAN'T AFFORD A $8700 MACHINE IN TODAY'S ECONOMY! When I started racing the local tracks the Beginner Class had to run two Beginner Races because you could only fit 40 riders on the starting line. Todays Beginner Class at my local track has maybe 20 riders on the starting line. A good 2-stroke will cost 'ya about $1500 to $2000 compared to about $5000 and up for a decent 4-Stroke.
Not true. I bought a used RMZ450 4 years ago for $2500 which is still going strong. 4 strokes are not what is killing motocross.

I was going to try and figure the reasoning behind not agreeing the cost of a competitive 50 going from $799 to $5000 had a significant bearing on the lack of mini riders entering our sport..

The pool of local riders that fill the LL mini gates has been shrinking for the past 10 or so years. The guys that used to be able to stop in their local dealer, pick up a bike, gear, parts and a few other accesories for about $1000 are history. As well are the numbers that filled those cleass.

Those guys that may have given this sport a shot at that price, will never see a LL starting gate because they can't afford to get into the front gate of their local tracks.

I dunno Dave. I have 8 and 5 year old sons with a TTR50 and PW50 in the garage. If they wanted to get into racing, I would not have a problem letting my 450, and riding, go to support them. And I know the little race bikes can be grenades but why is new equipment always a must? Far and away the most popular used bikes on ebay and craigslist (at least in my area) are 85's.

I believe a family could put together a low $$ race effort for junior. Also, why does everybody need to run travel trailers and fun movers? Whatever happened to vans and pick-ups with an enclosed trailer?

If anything, it's the parents who are making the sport too expensive, not the kids.
Bingo! My kid doesn't give a rat's that he's riding a 2005 KTM 50 Jr that I picked up on Craigslist. He's just stoked to try and make it go fast. Its my own preconceptions that I struggle to keep in check. (Wow, if he only had that 2013 KTM, he'd be the fastest kid on the track...which I know is BS, by the way, but its incredibly tempting).

Parents drive KTM (and Cobra) to make the 50 class ridiculously expensive because the only reason Jr isn't winning is because his 50 is not as good as his neighbor's 50, right?

Let me get this straight?

People can't afford to get to LL because it's to costly to race a local race?

LOL Scott I hope i read that wrong or understood it wrong.

For the guy that says fourstrokes are not hurting the sport, well you are correct they already did the damage which will take a long ass time to recover from, if ever. (friend of mine going to go to LL just forgot to put oil in his ride, 1500 later he is hopefully going to have enough money to go to LL). This wasn't 5 years ago this was 2 weeks ago. Hey Wardy, I'm not sure if you read it wrong or if I can't type clearly.. :-) But that was not my point.

Usually a family will start racing at a local level, riding park or a Friday night track somewhere. It was much easier to do that when you could get into it for a reasonable amount, and be competitive. Now you have to buy a high tech 50, that probably goes faster than it needs to, and families just aren't participating.

Yes there are a couple of classes open to a lesser more reasonable bike, but those aren't attractive to the masses. Not saying it;'s my opinion, but look at the numbers. Not everyone has dreams of going to LL, but they want to be competitive around home.

Everything in our lives has gotten more expensive. The increase to our moto expense has gone up significantly more as well. There will have to come a time where technology, economy and family budgets mix better than they do today.

I don't know too many local level guys that need adjustable types of power, 65 different suspension settings and so on. New ideas are cool, until they price the consumer out of the sport.

Great moving adding the 2 stroke class, love to hear it and watch it! TBaum is the man to beat this year and it helps ppl afford (As best as they can) a bike that wont kill them to maintain.

At least the collegeboy class is a "B/C" class.

what is the point of allowing "A" riders in a two stroke class?

Bring up the class structures/rules with the AMA. they're the ones that should be making the changes.

That and stupidity such as not putting oil in your bike shouldn't be rewarded...

Thanks man, rub it in. But yeah since I need to get ready one way or another, I did ride my super awesome "factory bolt on" 2stroke today, and I must say... I'm glad the 4stroke ruined the sport. I think I need a chiropractor after trying to hold on to that giant vibrator all day.
The 450 is not that bad actually, only the head was slightly messed up from the cams spinning dry, and that 1500 (which will be likely less) includes a rebuild that I might have done anyway.
But yeah I agree with you, it was pretty retarded, never happened before, and I bet I don't do it again.

Be on th lookout for cody chisholm. Kids ripping lately, and now that he's out of school for the simmer and getting to ride with his brother Kyle, he will be great in that class. Also, I know what bike he's gonna be riding, the thing is gonna be ready to go. I hope the kid beats all these homeschooled kids that live at training facilities and ride everyday.

The one place where there is guaranteed turn outs is Loretta's qualifiers... that is a $500 weekend right there(at least) We do not run many local races anymore to save up for the qualifiers and I know alot of families who do the same. Truth be told(my opinion) The Loretta Lynns obsession in Amateur Motocross has killed the local districts, races and turnouts. Has taken the fun right out of it.

Kind of draggin up an old post. The whole economy thing is quickly becoming a cop out for promoters and the AMA for not finding any alternatives to improve the sport or help in any way. Even though a legitimate 125 class would breathe life into a dying sport, MX Sports's amatuer 2-stroke class is only a pacifier plane and simple, and is not meant to be taken seriously or help the sport to any degree.

Ha, Good one FlaNard. Now, the 3 race series of the World 2-stroke championship is a whole other deal. This IMO is a series that has some definite potential.

I am willing to bet most of the guys bitching about the 150 in the 85 class have no experience at all with 85's. We looked at them for my boy. He rode on a few times and went right back to his YZ85.
50's can be done relatively cheap but are the most expensive of the three, 65 isn't too bad and the 85 class is the cheapest to run by far. You can pick up a used 85 (pick your color) for around $1k and be racing by the weekend. A few mods and it will be competitive at pretty much any level.
Amateur racing is only as expensive as you make it. To bitch at promoters about other racers who spend a ton is absolutely ignorant..........

Since someone dragged this thread back from the dead did anyone happen to read the AMA amateur supplemental rules for this year? They turned this 2-stroke class into a B/C skill division.

I am not sure I agree with you....

To a point yes i can agree, but I can (and did) buy a pw50 for $500. some boots, helmet and used gear and go racing for under a grand...

It's the "keeping up with the jones' " that makes it too expensive. (Just like everything else in this country)

So for under a grand we could be set up to race 15 times a year at Lee's fair races and have blast, probably spend less than $2,000 (minus the bike) racing all summer.

Then, buy a used kx65 for $1,000. and race for another 3 years. A person doesn't even need to buy those overpowered & overpriced 50's...

And no, i will not be told that any kid needs to race those high power 50's at Lorettas to make a career out of racing dirt bikes...

Can't argue with any of that.

Lee's Friday night races are good, and as you know quite different from the weekend district functions.

We go much less than we used to, but normally go as a family weekend, camp at the track and just hang out for the weekend.

Between the number of classes, track time on Sunday, and a variety of other things the weekend racing experience has changed over the course of time. B level factory rides, all the national level events, track series championships have all taken their toll on local district races everywhere.

That and the cost of following those events, being equipped for those events, and the cost of being on the road has taken it's toll on some.

Since the subject is 2 Strokes. This pic is 250 Pro/expert action from Sleepy Hollow last year's 2 Stroke Shootout.
