I'm jus' sayin'...
So I think we think similarly. I think "they" should manage the photographers better with rules and with consequences.
No you may not like this suggestion, but if you told all photographers they could not cross the track during the race, this would never happen. That would mean you would need more photographers to cover all the areas possibly but not risking the life, financial well being of a rider and his sponsor may be worth it.
Underage photographers are probably not a good idea from any liability standpoint, again this comes down to better management.
Montoya reported a vibration in the rear end of the car and pitted, all under caution. The crew checked the car and he was given the go ahead to go back on track. He radioed the spotter to keep an eye on the rear wheels to see if the the back of the car was traveling funny when it suddenly broke loose, timed perfectly to shoot up the track into the jet dryer. Keep in mind this is all under a yellow flag and cars are running well below race speed. Bizarre incident, much like the daytona track breaking up years ago.
Pit Row
If anyone is allowed, or the rules are not enforced when violated, to walk across the track at any point while it's hot then this is not a legitimate sport it's just an exhibition. When you have shit like that going on and like others have said countless people / crews and utv’s roaming alongside the tracks how can anyone take this sport seriously? It’s an embarrassment; and I call total bull shit to anyone who thinks this sport exudes professionalism. Total amateur hour out there.
I’ve been involved in all forms of racing two wheels for over 35years and I have a great deal of respect for DC. I’m just calling it like I see it.
Does it make sense that parents are allowed anywhere on the track beyond the mechanics area? It seems that Big James and Tony A are two that get the most TV time wondering the track, but should they be allowed to? Do photogs have free reign on the track to go wherever they want?
I don't know the rules, I'm just asking.
I can't see anyone thinking the guy wasn't stupid for what he did. It was an idiot move, but I don't think we need to know his name, we need to know that MX Sports/ AMA is going to make sure this never happens again.
Posting this guys name on the interweb can only fuel the fire to the point where some crazed Stewart fan from another country like, Oh... lets say Lavita, twists off and hunts him down to stab him in the throat with a James Stewart action figure.
Much to my suprise, this thread didn't meltdown.... carry on Vital!
I remember at the 1993 Budds Creek 250 GP a local news photographer decided to stand in the first turn and got drilled by Jeff Stanton, who had won something like three straight USGP races to that point. It knocked Jeff down and ruined his day. All of the rest of us photographers, along with the guy who got hit, were told to stay off the track.
All of the photographers were told to stay off the track at Thunder Valley too, and most of then obliged the request. This guy did not, and it had a terrible ripple effect. I am not sure how it's going to turn out -- a motocross track is a tough place to shoot, and unlike football, baseball or basketball, it impossible to just be on the outside the whole time and make good photos. So the personal responsibility thing comes into play, and it was played badly in Colorado....
