Roczen and expectations!

I think Ben Townley might have actually won his first race in America. I'm not sure but I seem to remember him doing very well at Hangtown when he first arrived in 2007?? I take and agree with your point though - KR is doing very well overall.

BT had raced a few in 2006, before he went 2-1 at hangtown mx 07.

Grant Langston 2001 on a KTM 125 - just came into my head. It was a lot less deep of field back then though. I think he only had Mike Brown and Travis Pastrana to really worry about.

Pourcel? He won that a regional SX race before he even moved over permanently, but did he win his first race in 09?

Haven't had time to read all 7 pages..

But was talking to my mate about this. I kind of feel like he'd have done better if he'd skipped the SX, maybe done some GPs for prep, won then all and then gone straight into the Outdoors... had he done that, he'd have gone to Hangtown the wonder kid that beat Dungey at Des Nations, the Champion and totally unused to NOT winning.

I just wonder how much SX dented his confidence. Even though he did well for his first year, by the end of it he accepted Barcia beating him. He was defeated. We hadn't seen that at all in Roczen. SX put a chink in his armour. Seemed like he had more FIRE last year.

So thats one theory...

Something else I picked up on in a Pulpcast was how different his life out in Cali is.. not just the fact its a new country. But he talked abut being a lot more free in Germany. He had his own private track, could ride when ever he wanted. Had loads of land, load of friends to fuck around with to take the pressure off training etc..

Where as now he lives in a rented house, if its anywhere near Murietta its probably fucking bland and totally depressing and in his words theres nothing to do apart from train and think about moto.

And of course we need to remember, HE IS 18!!
+1 I think once he gets his confidence back (which could happen with just one moto win) I think we will see the 2010 MXDN Roczen.

Tortelli won his first race too outdoors. Albee nearly won as well except for a broken back wheel.

You are calling a world champ a rookie? I would call Anderson or Jessy Nelson a rookie. Kroc is a 2 year sx racer an a mx2 champ, don't think I would call him a rookie, but you can if you want.

Excellent post Rob.

As an old fart who remembers Lackey trying for years to get a 500GP title I can relate to the point you're making. For me the allure of the GPs is experiencing different cultures while riding on different circuits around the globe. Unfortunately too many US fans have tunnel vision and think the Nationals are the ultimate. To be clear I'm not trying to take anything away from the Nationals or racing in the US just highlighting what a different challenge it is competing in the GPs.

I'm still buzzing from the Valkenswaard GP and can't wait until Matterly Basin. Now if I can just figure out a way to get to Lommel for the Des Nations.

What are your travel arrangements in September?
I don't have any at the moment unfortunately.

Getting ready to get my Matterly Basin ticket shortly but seriously doubt If I can pull off Lommel.....plus I've already survived Amsterdam once this year and maybe shouldn't push my luck with two visits.

A thread like this one makes me think Darwin was too optimistic. Creatures don't ascend from lower life forms to higher ones, they descend from intelligent, reasonable life forms to those barely able to assemble a single thought - from human to amoebae in only 8 pages.

Ken Roczen is a great rider, and I'd love to see him ride in the States for a long, long time. He can win any race he enters, anywhere in the world. And we have a few fast US riders around, and there are a bunch of really fast guys riding the GPs. We're lucky to be able to watch this sport unfold and we're doubly blessed to be able to get on our own bikes every week and give it our best shot attempting our imitations of the things they can do on a motorcycle. And so it has been since the days of DeCoster and Hannah, or Robert and Hallman.

So what's all the bitching about?

Not Every Euro Rider is as good as this manLaughing

As for all u dumb niggas be happy Roczen wanted to come to America and be beat by the worlds fastest and better himself instead of Trail riding with Herlings all summer long

I totally believe he will win some races...I thought he woud have won that first moto, to be honest I dont think Baggett should have got by Roczen where he did, if Roczen had held onto it a little longer right there he would have won moto 1, nowhere else to pass unless Roczen goes too hard into the next turn. He will do good though, but I think a lot of people expected him to win easily and so far that hasnt happened, though he has done very well.

Ok guys all I meant was who expected a world champion to win right when he got here? Its never happened! Americans are the best remember? Thats why THEY come here to race the best!

I'm confused as to how this thread got so far away from Kenny himself, but it is hardly surprising. Bottom line is that the kid is awesome and he can win this series, and he will win a race, and soon-in fact I think he will win this week end considering how fast he went around this track at the MXON.

We are lucky to have him and Musquin-both are fantastic to watch and have added tremendous depth to the 250 field.

Back to this weekend-I call Kenny for the win!

Wow this is comedy! Who the hell expected him to "destroy" the competetion? He came 2 corners short of winning his very first AMA national moto he ever raced. Name one european rider that has ever won when they first got here? How many KTM riders have won here? PC/Geico/Suz have owned this class for several years. Tomac was faster than Stew last weekend. Ken is doing great...
tortelli, pourcel!

can't really count townley as a 'euro' with him being from new zealand!

roczens doing really well, and still in the championship hunt two rounds in, its a long championship- i think this thread is more to do with some american fans wanting to see him do badly than him not living up to expectations. I think he will definitely win races this year (he will be strong at thunder valley as he's ridden there before) - i'm also expecting musquin to be up there battling for race wins soon, he's riding brilliantly to say he had a plate put in his hand a few days before hangtown!
