I don't know much about Mike, but he sounds like a pretty good dude. He sounds kind of like (not trying to sound racist) but either black or white, no in betweeen, especially with the 'I have no money, but I'll give you a bike' part.
I wonder who he was talking about though with the baggage?(seriously)
That was a good interview for sure. Pretty cool that James asked to just race and not worry about the money part. Hope this is a big turn around for him and throws some spark back into his racing program.
Yeah. It seemed to be fairly well known that Dungey lost a lot if faith in the Suzuki program when Decoster left. The bike problems throughout the year didn't exactly help that situation either.
I'm a Dungey fan, but I'm excited to see Stewie on a Suzuki. Bring on Hangtown!
I was wondering about that too. What the hell baggage did RD have?
Rumour actually had Dungey trying to get out of his Suzuki contract when RogerD left. Not a good trust building exercise when it comes to getting a new team manager.
Sounds like a real good guy, and he had a very tough year last year. But he obviously has the stick-to-it quality that a team manager has to have, even when things don't go well. Fix what broke, make sure it doesn't break again, and get back out there and race. And he sounds like a no-drama guy, and that's what James needs.
That baggage (Dungey) won Suzuki four (Lites SX, Lite MX, SX, and MX) championships. He is butt hurt. I have never read an interview with him prior to today and one was one too many.

If all of this is true about Dungey (and I'm not saying it is or isn't) is that really a wise move by Ryan to rely on Roger so much?
What's wrong with relying on the best? More interesting to me is that if I recall Roger's departure from Suzuki had something to do with length of contract (i.e. it would only be for 1 year). Given the change to Yoshimura a year later it seems the Yoshimura deal was probably in concrete or at least stong consideration long before it was ever made known.
As for JS7. kudos to him for racing for free. There isn't a better way to prove your value than to show it up front without the expectation of being compensated.

I knew after I posted that I was going to get crucified by at least one person.
I didn't really mean it to sound the way I probably made it out to be. I guess I just meant, so basically Ryan's racing career is and has always been centered around 1 person or mentor. What happens if Roger says tomorrow "I'm done, I need to step away"? It would just seem as if Ryan would be screwed, because he has put his whole professional career on one person's philosophies. In one way, it's very honorable, but is it a wise choice to not take advantage of other people's wisdom also? Take for instance, if Ryan would've went to Team 22 this year. I know Chad really wanted him and I think he could've given Ryan some things/guidance that Roger couldn't of.

Agree, I don't think he is saying that Dungey is baggage, just the observation that Webb stepping into RD's shoes with Dungey dissappointed with Suzuki for not committing to RD and pretty much resolved to leave at the end of the contract is a pretty baggage laden situation. No body disputes that Dungey was not happy with Suzuki going into that relationship with his new team manager.
Mike's a great guy and I'm sure he's accurate in his assessment. He's been around a long time and was the Suzuki Off-Road Team Manager for about 15 years. His brother Tom is the editor of Dirt Bike Magazine (where DeCoster used to work) and I'm sure he knows Roger and Dungey's background situation quite well. Honest opinions are never taken very well by the riding public, who'd carry the riders sack (who they hero worship) around the pits, if they were allowed to.

My apologies if it came off as crucifixion. That wasn't my intent. I read it basically the way you stated it above. I just posed the question of it really being a problem. Frankly, my impression is that Roger is definitely a mentor, given the similarities between Ryan/Roger in approach to racing, I am not surprised that Ryan would feel more comfortable with Roger than others. I suspect Ryan would and does take advantage of other's wisdom. At present, though it seems that there is a lot of synergy between the two Rs that will probably only need to be delt with as future circumstances dictate.
p.s. How's Montana, I spend a lot of time in the Missoula/Thompson Falls/Wallace Idaho area?

Funny.....
Coming from a person who said last year Dungey would never go to KTM because that would put him back in DeCoster's shadow.
