Fastway System 5 steering stabilzer...high and low speed adjustment is a must in the woods
Pro Taper Evo handle bars...huge difference in vibration dampening
Bridgestone Ultra Heavy Duty tubes...have not had a tube failure since making the switch in 1997...and I've had plenty of flat spots in my rims from hitting rocks and tree roots.

Spare wheels for the new meats and a set for the practice skins. Then Suspension, but voted with my wallet after that and slammed that 2nd generation 08 frame inside my 06 YZ450F. I race so little anymore and enjoy the woods time on the 125 so the old girl still farts with the best of them.

Dealing with 35 year old vintagebikes I've been finding out that one of the best upgrades you can do is a PVL Electronic Ignition. I don't care if the bike came equipped with a cdi or not, that stuff is over three decades old and just doesn't perform like it did when it was new. The 79 CR125 I just finished starts first kick hot or cold and has a really nice bark to it. Good stuff.

Got a set of A kit PC suspension on eBay for 1300$ and it's amazing. Best thing I've ever rode on. Besides suspension a set of Renthal twinwall MC bend bars make me feel most comfortable on a bike.

A set of stickers is good for at least a couple of seconds a lap.
Ones with flames on them so the bike looks like it's on fire!!!!

Name the best performing tires you bought. Were they Dunlop, Bridgestone, Michelin or none of the above?

Magura clutch for my KX 250. A must for any Jap bike IMO. Once you go all hydraulic you don't go back.

I did have to go back. After freshening the blood the hydraulic clutch would not release completly and fried my plates. Plus the spoke nipple holding the actuator stripped. I did like it but had bad luck with it. I may buy a new one.

Thats a shame. Ive had mine for a year and had no problems with it. Just curious... do you run a 2 stroke or 4 stroke? I bleed mine every few months or so and it always goes back to how it was before.

I bought it for my 2000 Honda CR500. I had the springs stiffened also. Yes at first I had no troubles with it. Not until I sold the bike. Then bought it back cause the bike scared the sh** out of the buyer. Woohoo

Factory Connection
Have done four or five through them.
Love them every time, feels like a whole new bike.

if you have a Yamaha now and wont or cant sell it, do whatever Doug Dubach says to do to it...period.

other than that, never buy a Yamaha and you will be at a better starting point....

I had a Honda shop up North take the 250f engine out and put in a 500 two-stroke engine.

Aside from that, JETTING. Jetting this beast made a world of difference in rideability.

Just got a leftover 2011 CRF450, put a Merge Racing linkage knuckle on it. Between that and a set of Michelin MS3's the bike rides pretty good. This is the most stock I have kept a bike in a long time, and its not too bad.

Same deal for me. Took the fartin' 450 motor out out of my '06 crf450 and replaced it with a '00 cr500 engine. Life is good now!

Black plastics.
Graphics kit (anything metal Mulisha).
black rims.
red spokes
titanium exhaust
Hose Kit
anadized case covers and bolts
I drill little holes in all the bolts to save weight
The gas cap with the stubby little vent hose

And that is even before I'll let my bike in the back of the truck....

Oversized front rotor. First and foremost. Japan should be ashamed of themselves in that department.

Which bars did you go with? Did you just get the tall seat or extra tall seat from KTM or another brand? If so, was it the soft version? Which pegs did you switch to? I'm looking for options for an upcoming 250 SX. What did you do about the suspesnion setup?

Fastway lowboy pegs...

SDG tallest seat - Check the serial cause there is tall, and really tall... I went with the highest....

and I want to say CR high bend but I think it might have been Windham bars with some bar risers from Ride Engineering because I didn't want to much sweep?

Either way, get the bend/sweep you like and get bar raisers, a super tall bar looks funny! hahaha

Oh, and it's much more comfortable to ride for me, but my 5'10 brother hates it!
Thanks!
Windham bend all the way if you're over 6' tall. The sweep on the CR high seems like it would cause more arm pump.

Depends on the bike:
1. I've bought a bike that was unrideable after the suspension was set up for a smaller woods rider. In that situation suspension revalve/respring by Pro Circuit was the top mod. I've had some bikes where the suspension worked fairly well for me and I used the stock valving/springs or changed one or the other but not both. If I can afford it I will have my suspension professionally revalved even if it's just the icing on the cake, because it has always been better than stock to varying degrees.
2. In general the first mod I do is change the gearing, usually a really easy way to tune the bike to your liking and type of riding, and very economical. But again, I have had a bike or two where the stock gearing seemed the best.
3. I like to give my bike a little protection right off the bat, they all come with skid plates and case guards now, but I usually add radiator braces and a throttle tube, good insurance that you will usually finish your moto after a crash.
4. After that the best thing to do for guys that don't have unlimited finances for the weekend addiction is to save the rest for rainy days (that surely will come in moto). Keeping tires and chains fresh on a 450 is expensive, it blows my mind when I see a $12,000+ weekend warrior bike running a badly worn rear tire. Not to mention crash damage which will also usually come a few times a season.
I may have forgotten some stuff, but I'd say those are my priorities, and the order of them depends on the bike. You can do some set up before the bike touches dirt and continue on day 1 of riding for free (other than maybe grips you like if they don't come stock). Completely grease and properly torque everything. Set up position of bars, levers to your liking and start getting suspension clickers dialed day one.
What kind of radiator braces did you go with? I get so tired of replacing my radiators. I keep a spare set on hand now just in case.
