He said TM, not KTM. TM is an Italian brand.
My son had the throttle of his KTM 50 stick wide open several years ago, he was 6 at the time. Landed from a jump and it hung wide open. Thankfully, he had the wherewithal to guide the bike off the track and lay it down without gettin hurt.

DAMN!
I had this happen once, thankfully in the desert when I was younger. Ended up swapping and going through a couple cactus and bushes, Walked away but the bike stuck WFO on the ground while I was down and poped a head gasket..... I am sure a head gasket is the better situation. Get well soon and call those TM f***ers, make them fix the bike.

Would you believe that pretty much all non Jap 2 strokes use the exact same throttle cable design and slide assembly?

It's common on ktmtalk because there are lot of new ktm 2 strokes, but it can happen to ANY of the modern 2 strokes.

That was the point.

I will still try to make it to Sherwood. Right now I have a torn knee, a broken collarbone, a concussion, sore back, sore neck, broken thumb, sore lower leg and a six inch gash on my head. Not exactly the same injuries as Reed but I thought I had a broken leg and back when I posted this.
I had done a few laps to break in my TM at Trampas Parkers track and put it back and rode my ktm the rest of the day. Then right before we left I decided to spin a few fast laps on the TM. I was almost all the way around the track when headed toward the big double in the back the throttle stuck wide open. I pulled in the clutch and hit the brakes but I endoed flipping end over end. My helmet was cracked and my leatt broken in half.

Killer 2 stroke?

Question? was this over a jump or something, because you can always pull in the clutch, right?

Oh and get well soon!

Yes, I can believe it. I've put a Honda throttle cable on my 300 (because I needed longer length due to the under the bar steering damper) but besides the length difference I can't really tell them apart.
Carburetors on the other hand come in all shapes and forms. I could see some design being more prone to a sticking slide than others.

When we had Cobras, KTM 50's and 65's, I noticed that they didn't use the clip in a groove setup to fasten the throttle cable to the carburetor, and at the throttle end it could pull right out of the housing also. The full-size Euro-bikes are this way too? I can't believe any major manufacturer still builds their bike this way. It seems like a really stupid detail to overlook.

I used a KX 60/65 throttle, cable, clip and the brass fitting that threads in to the carb top cap on all of our little bikes. Safety wire doesn't hurt either.

I could not agree more. I hope there is more behind GUYB's post that I am not catching onto. But to me it just sounded like a straight dickish comment. And I know you have the almighty power to click me Steve. But remember that its the users of this board that keep you in business. I have held my tongue at some of your posts before because I love this message board. But as someone that has been severely injured and layed up in the hospital for weeks on end. I find that your post was completely classless to say the least. Good on you TXMXER for having the balls to say something. If I am gone you know why. Steve I think you should appologize to Denn700 as that was not the time to make jokes. I guess next time you or one of your loved ones is layed up, we can laugh at your expense?

Oh if anyone once to know. The TM is fast!!! I think it will blow the doors off a 450 if you can hang on to it. It made my KTM feel like an 80. I don't know if I'll keep it though.

Gutted to hear your news - I was expecting a proud owners report not this! Get well soon and get that bike completely checked out.

"Italian this" *"Euro that" the carb on that bike is Japanese fella's. We've had sticking carb's on our older steel framed 2t TM's in the past but it was dirt in the carb from jet washing. This does not sound like that.

( If it's any consolation we ran-in our 2010 Des Nations TM450 on Sunday - It ran like a f*cking express train! but stopped as required ).

GET BETTER!

Stuck throttle is usually fraided cable or I know on my older KX250, if the throttle cable was installed improperly, the cable could bind between the fork and frame and cause problems.

had that happen on my old KTM 200 a couple years ago and still have a lump on my thigh. doc drained 17 onces of fluid out of it the 1st time and about half that the 2nd time. I put a honda cable on it. hope you take the time to find the problem and don't give up on the bike.

I had almost forgot...this is one of the main reasons I moved to a 4-stroke. It can be a big deal! It's easy to say "just pull in the clutch", but there's this microsecond of "wtf is going on?" that sorta paralyzes your reflexes, and that fraction of a second is huge. I had this happen with a 99' YZ125, of course on approach to a big jump. Went over the bars but otherwise OK. It was my fault...had misrouted the throttle cable during a top-end change, but still...if it was a push-pull, it wouldn't have happened. Next was an 00' CR250. Happened on the first ride, going into a whoop section. Went through there faster then I ever had, but it scared the hell out of me. It "kinda" stuck a couple more times in the next few minutes. I was so rattled I put it on the truck and went home. I took it apart, safety-wired the cable to the carb top, cleaned the slide and went out the next weekend. Same issue. The last time it stuck, I managed to get it shut off in the stuck position. The sticking was def. inside the carb itself, as the cable was still snug into the top and the throttle grip was rolling back smoothly. I started unscrewing the carb top and heard the slide "pop" back shut. I talked to the dealer about it (the bike had 2 hours on it now) and they ended up getting me a new OEM slide. Following that, it never stuck hard again, but a few times it was sorta slow to close...something was still not right. I completely lost confidence in the bike but was also afraid to sell it because I didn't want to kill someone else, so I traded it back to the dealer for a YZ426F, losing $1500 in the process. I think this became a bigger issue with CR250's of that era because of grit getting into the carb through the airbox / boot seal. Apparently all it takes is a grain of sand to jam that thing. Ironically, I have a 96' CR250 woods bike that has never stuck, and that bike has a million hours on it.

Carb? They still make bikes with carbs? The only thing I have with a carb is my pressure washer.

Get well soon

My boss at work got paralyzed from a stuck throttle, I think it was a 99-00 KX250? He and several other guys from work all had the same bike, and all of them would randomly get stuck WFO. They tried every trick they could think to stop it, but nothing would. One day, first lap of practice, he was rolling around up to a steep jump when right before it went braAAAAAAAP! and he shot straight up into the air, bailed off the back of the bike and broke his back when he fell, broke the bars off the bike and busted the swingarm. They eventually came up with the theory that the crankcases werent sealed right from the factory, and would occasionally leak air and cause the bike to rev uncontrollably.

I am guessing this article is one of GuyB's last experiences with a 2-stroke and of course it is easier to ride a 4-stroke when lacking the talent and skill to ride a 2-stroke without wadding up Wink

Its pretty crazy how most people not having the skill to rip on a 2 stroke has made 4 strokes so popular . I think we should stop making everything so easy for everyone , its like we are trying to idiot proof the world and its not gonna work . Atleast most 4 strokers admit 2 strokes are to hard to ride.Cool
