Knee braces, which one to buy???

Edited Date/Time 2/18/2012 12:14pm
I currently have a worn out set of thor shin guards and want to buy a set of knee braces. I dont mind the price I just want a really good set that fits well. I was in the market to buy the asterick utlacell's but hear that they are bulky and dont fit well in pants of boots. I wear Thor core gear and Alpinestar tech 10's. I hear alot of great things about the TLD and the pod mx300's or mx700 (not sure what the difference is between the 300 vs 700). Its hard to buy a set with out riding with them and just trying them on at Chapparal motorsports and walking around in them in the store. Can anyone weigh in on this and what they are currently using. I read some TLD reviews that they are slim and fit well. The Ultacells seem like they will hold and not slid down. My thor junk knee gaurds slide right down after i stand up and I hate it. Thanks

I have asterisk braces, they work great for me. You'll feel clumsy at first, but you won't notice them when riding after @ 5 laps. Now, I can't ride without them...

Understand that going from simple knee guards to real knee braces is going to take some time getting used to, but before long you'll feel totally comfortable, especially when riding. I would have to agree that the new Asterisk braces are the way to go...great adjustability and quality.

I have Asterisk's and they are falling apart even after 3 rebuild's but it's been about 9 years on them. The thread locking mechanism in the knee joint part gets torn. Maybe the new ones are better.

I just ordered podmx K300's and some other stuff from BTO and using the coupon redemption code of "matthes" I saved $90 on my order. The pod's look legit.

The TLD's look good but seem a little less protective than Asterisk or pod maybe...

Buddy, do you have a leather guard or something for the inside knee part so you don't burn through your pants in one ride on those podmx's? Or do they not need that?

I had to on the asterisk or pants would last 2 rides.

EVS Webs fa sho! Takes a few laps to get comfortable with em but then you won't even notice em and wouldn't wanna ride without em. They are also carbon fiber which is a plus... supposedly helps prevent broken femar's too Whistling

Been running Asterisk for 10+ years. Only had them refurbished twice. No doubt in my mind that I will buy another set of Asterisk when the time comes.

Have you had any knee injuries in the past?

When I had my acl surgery It took a lot of talking to get my surgin to right me a script for my cti. This is his words. " he had a lot of patents with minor injuries asking for a custom brace. He's a firm believer that if you haven't had surgery the braces can do more harm then good Exp. If there not custom fitted. It's not impossible to get an off the shelf brace to fit you but its not gonna be anything like a custom fitted one.. don't bash me I'm just saying what he said. Just something to consider

Anyway braces, I've wanted to try on some pods but no shops around here have them. I have a cti and an off the shelf asterisks. The asterisk is alright, I don't have to many complaints about it except it rips through pants easily. of course my cti is awesome but if you can't get them through insurance there Veryy very Expensive.

Most important thing.. try on before you buy to see which ones fit and feel the most comfortable to you

CTi2s. Custom fit. Titanium and carbon fiber construction so they're light and strong.

Been wearing them for years. They last and last and have kept my knees in good
working order. What more can you ask for from a brace?

Went to Chapparal today and tried on the Pod MX700 in Med, Large and XL for some reason my left leg by the side of my knee was rubbing really hard on the brace and it made it really uncomfortable. the XL felt better but were definitly to big, the Large on my right felt great. Although when I stood straight up the bottom of the brace put pressure on my shins. I tried on the Troy Lee Catalyst and they felt great. I just didnt care for the fact that the knee cap was so small and when you bend your knee there is about 2 inches that comes exposed. I never tried the asterisk, I really wanted to try the ultacells, I dont care for the other style laces...not sure where to go from here?

I was in same boat as you. Never wore braces. Got setup with Pods and couldn't be happier. I had no adjustment to riding, it's like I had been riding with them the whole time. As for your test fit, they are adjustable. I had the same issue as you. They come with different size pads for the sides. Also they come with different size shims to adjust the extension. You just put these little rubber shims in the hinges. Once I did this both legs felt comfy. With no pressure. They also are fully rebuild able with a small kit. What I like most about the pods is they are light, compact, and don't wear my graphics or pants. I have the 700's so I don't know the difference to the 300's.

Oh make sure you measure your knee like it suggests to find your size. Then use the correct size pads and shims to fit the rest of the way. You don't want the wrong size.

Had first pair of Asterisks for over 10 years with zero problems. Had them refurbished once.

Got a new pair (generation 2) last year (before the gen 3 ones came out). The new ones are definitely better than the old ones. I'm sure the POD ones are good too. You get what you pay for. I won't ride without them now.

So is there a way to adjust the pressure on my left knee??, I tried the different size pads but the pressure was still there. Can you shim the brace so that pressure goes away. Again my Left brace felt great, it was the right that was putting pressure on the side of my knee joint constant no matter if I was standing up or sitting down. The brace has a nature curve to it, I was wondering if that could be changed slightly. Maybe I have a wierd right leg that curves to much??? Never thought so. Is there a customer service number to call and ask for help

I've worn Asterisk since day 1 with zero problems. I am switching to Pod's though because I had a chance to try a set and fell in love with them.

I took a Gary Semics MX class years ago and received a coupon for CTI's. Eliminated the need for a prescription and got a bunch off list. Not sure if they are still doing this.

If you have the desire and means to buy the best then CTI 2 custom fit is that brace. I've had Asterisks. They are a good design and I like how they fasten. They surprisingly hold up well with their plastic fasteners but a CTI 2 they are not. I look at them as more of a good affordable alternative to a CTI 2 but I would still rate them a step behind the CTI Edge because they are difficult if not impossible to adjust right. Plus, on the pair I had the adjustments striped out, so I was stuck with where I had them.
Any of these braces I like because the frame goes down the front of your shin. Don Joy for instance goes around the back of the calve and it just seems to me that it is a tib fib waiting to happen. Especially when riding a bike because impacts to your leg in the event of a crash is most likely going to come from the forward direction.

Myself and a few friends all had our insurance pay for the braces. All you need is a script from your doc. I told my doc I wanted them and she asked what was wrong with my knees. i told her nothing but something might without protection and with no hesitation she wrote the script. Was measured and fitted a day later. It was $1500 per brace and 500 for the knee cups. I have had them for years and I am shore I would of trashed my knees many times over by now but they are perfect. I would feel like I forgot my helmet without them.
