Does anyone understand the logic of having a nightime outdoor national? The only reason I see is a one day event for the riders. Fly in Friday night and fly out Saturday night. Lower prices for the spectators? Eliminate the need for spectators to camp and make an EVENT out of it? Are they charging $10 bucks like a saturday night stock car race? We made the 16hour roundtrip drive the past two years but can't see this being worth while. Can't be for live tv coverage. Speed only interupted the non stop coverage of Pinks to show the second motos.

It is just something new. It's an experiment and it kind of changes it up a little for everyone to make it more exciting i guess.

What good is it to have the spectators NOT show up because of the prospect of being in the sun all day. No shade makes it miserable to all except the "hardcore". Even for us it's not a picnic. So, make it an evening event, add 20% to your gate, maybe more, and see if it works.

By the way it makes sense for only a few tracks definetly not all. Millville would be a bear to light, though I know it can be done.

The simple answer is "you won't know if you don't go"... It might be great and your ass won't fry out in the sun...and why wouldn't you still camp Sat night? Amateur day Sunday anyone - - I know that would be tough.

A friend of mine is flying in on friday, him my son and I are making the drive in his rental. I am looking forward to it. It will be different for sure, the only thing I am not sure about is what to wear. How cold does it get there at night?

Are you crazy? Nascar runs almost every round in the sumer at tracks with the spectators baking in the sun all day and they sell out almost every time. Same with baseball. At least at a outdoor nat you can use an umbrella unlike the ballparks and nascar tracks.
Maybe they should realize that 95% of spectators at outdoor mx events are active motocross racers who bring along friends and family.
We don't care about paved parking lots, electricity, water hook ups, and at the very least sun and heat.

Red Bud is the last true outdoor national experience. You can race the pro track and the night track 2 nights, have your own campfire, bring beer if that is your choice and enjoy yourself with out all the restrictions.

Since sx is such a west coast thing with 5 events they should give red bud at least 2 events but all 12 would make more sense.

The main moto's start at like 7pm don't they?
What time does the sun go down in CO this time of year?
It doesn't go down until about 9 here on the east coast.

I have been to many Nationals were it was is hot as hell. If there is no lighting problems I would rather be there at night. Plus you can camp out after the race because you do not have to rush home.

This could be great for Jlaw and Hill. They can focus on the race then get drunk and flip cars after the race. SmileSmile

Might have a small part in bikes finishing the race. Lakewood has had nearly the most Mechanical DNF's of all the rounds due to the fuel boiling (altitude and heat combo). Running the event at night may help the race not come down to attrition.

It's so the fuel won't boil on the racers

true but your not paid to race there's a difference...

I covered this on my blog back in April... from a Racer X press release...

Now, if you're like me, you're probably wondering why this is even considered a "good idea." Well, consider what Thunder Valley's promoter, David Clabaugh, had to say in this press release: "Hosting the race at night brings a new element to AMA Motocross and gives fans a new perspective. And in this ever-changing marketplace, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our event and night racing seems like a perfect fit for our regions’ fans.

“We’ve met with officials from the Bandimere drag racing facility up the highway and we’ve done studies on local trends on event attendance in our area. We strongly feel that our greatest area for growth at Thunder Valley is to hold our national at night.”

They clearly believe the night show will help attendance. I also believe it will look GREAT on tv...

Aren't the second motos going to be LIVE on SPEED, Saturday night? That sounds like a good reason.

I hope they have a gazillion watt lighting system. I've ridden under lights before outdoors and it is really different. For one, you get reflections off the back of your goggle lens (the inside of the goggles), and it's a lot harder to see smaller bumps and ruts.

When they start race's at 2:00 it does not allow the fans time to get fully fucked up drunk, now giving them more time and letting them do this under the cover of darkness should allow them a perfect race experience.

I am going to sit this one out and see how it goes.

Ive raced night races, totally sux. Cant read terrain well and shadows all over the place.

But Im sure it will be spectator friendly. Certainly lots cooler.

I agree with the camping out. Getting out of Red Bud right after the National is a nightmare, especially now that RC wont have the win by the 3rd lap and the not so hardcore weave their way out of the parking lot after a day of drinking in the hot sun. At least people can camp out and sober up before driving. I know I am a wet blanket but after almost being hit by a jackass backing up w/o looking it worries me about the people who bring kids.

Williams' got it right. The cooler, dense night air will be kinder to the bikes (and riders).
