I dont have pics, but Malcolm Smith, Blasuziak, Geoff Aaron, unless were talking pure motocross only. I remember 3 foreigners coming over here and destroying us in the off-road world too. All the trials guys got some talent. Reynard and Nate Adams too.

When I think of Natural talent, who could ride any bike, not factory bikes to a podium, two guys come to mind, and I am not saying the other riders aren't good, but you said natural talent, their pics have been posted:

Ron Lechien and Marty Tripes, there is your natural talent.

Seriously, this guy was the most unreal rider I've ever seen, all due respect to Bailey, Lechien, Everts, Bayle etc.

I think he struggled with his weight and motivational issues but he absolutely should have won a 250cc World Championship. He was our best rider of the 90's, better than Dobb, Nicoll and Malin in my opinion. At least he won a MXdN. He does training schools and works as a stuntman now.

edit: just looked on his wikipedia and apprently he did the Motorcycle stunts for James Bond; Quantum of Solace.

robbie herring was capable of beating anyone on his day- i remember reading an interview with everts after he'd been smoked by rob at a brit champs round, the comment was something along the lines of 'who is this guy, and why is he not world champion!'

robs a real nice guy, and a great coach. At a club race I was racing at last year he was there watching and even marshalled for the day when the club were short of marshals. Part of the 94 des nations winning team aswel (although malins performance that day slightly over- shadowed everyone else!)

I'd add reynard, bailey, lechein and demaria to the naturally talented rider group- and Windham! All silky smooth and effortless riding styles. Demaria was overweight most of his career, dont think he liked to train much- but on a technical track he was in a league of his own at times!

I still rate pourcel as the most naturally talented rider i have ever seen- watching him ride a motorcycle (and how effortless it looks at times) is something to behold.

Thanks for the update on Herring guys.
He's one of those rider you forget about and how good he was.
I remember racing against Robbie when he first came to England in '84 with Colin Dugmore to do some schoolboy nationals - both guys were amazing talents.
We did a national at the old Fox & Hounds track where they had a ski jump that you hid just wide open and Rob was doing these one handers off it , back when no one was doing that stuff. They stopped the meeting and told him & Dugmore to quit doing them 'cos it was " too dangerous" Smile

As I remember Rob "toned down" his style the longer he was in England , the first year in the adults I raced against him in the support champs and he was doing stuff on a bike NOBODY in England was even thinking about doing.I heard his Dad really pushed him hard and when Dad kind of backed away Rob lost his focus - don't know if that's true or not.

Another natural from England was Jem Whatley - when that guy put his mind to it he could beat anyone , anywhere , he just didn't care enough but he was the most naturally talented rider I ever rode with.

i think kristian whatley is a similar talent (that could be great if he put his mind to it)

i'd like to add billy mackenzie to the list aswel - i grew up racing with billy, and he was in a league of his own! Even at gp level when he was onit he was untouchable. I think billy lost focus, and also seems to suffer from lapses of concentration (if you wach him ride he's really smooth, but crashes alot- in my opinion its just a problem with concentrating for long periods of time)

No you're exactly right, neither trained and they won races on non factory bikes. That my friends is natural talent. RJ will tell you that Ronnie won effortlessly and no training while RJ busted his ass to get where he was.

X2 - Also what I consider natural talent. Whatched Tripes win the 1st moto by "magic" at Sears Point Trans-AM 1978, second moto back to every-day Marty Tripes.

Add Malcom Smith and Joel Robert.

Marty Tripes, won the first supercross ever (at 16?). On a normal day, he was one of the best, other days he was unbelievably good.

What was crazy about that Sears moto was that Weinert, Hannah, Ellis and I think Sun were just hammering each other for the lead, just an awesome rubbing race, and Tripes just came from behind tooling around on the pegs like a trials rider, passed them and won by like 30 seconds. Looking slow.

A defunct vintage mag ran an interview with Howerton (now redone at http://www.wsmchof.com/kent-howerton.html ) and he captured it pretty well:

BR: Was Tripes the best American talent that you’ve ever seen.

KH: I really haven’t seen that much natural talent in anybody else. You know, Ron Lechien had a lot of natural ability. There have been other guys out there with natural talent, too, but Marty was just unbelievably talented. I remember one race, in Ohio on a hard dusty track. I finished 11th in the first moto and Marty finished behind me. After the moto, we were just kinda sitting there talking about the race. I said to him, "Marty, you know, I don’t know why you are back sliding around with me back here. All you gotta do is just go ride up to the front. Marty says, "Really?" I blurted back to him, "Man, you can win any race you want." He had so much natural talent, it’s not even funny. And so I just kinda forgot about it. I came in after the last moto I said, "Well how’d you do?" "Oh I won."

There's a notion that the "talent" guys are the smoothest, but RC's aggression doesn't disqualify him. The guy pulled off stuff that was just unreal, that would have killed anyone else, and managed to do it winning at least one championship every year he raced. That's talent.
