If you had all the money you have spent on MX over the years whether it be riding racing or going to races how much do you estimate you have spent.

I have been thinking about this the last couple days and I think my number is somewhere in the range of 150,000. That doesn't include the cash I might have gotten selling the used bikes that I was able to unload at pennies on the dollar. And none of my winnings from racing.

Lets see '85 and '86 KX125, '89, '90, '92, '93, '96, '00, '02, '03 RM125, '06 YZ250F, '09 KX250F So that's approximately $55k in bikes, probably got half back selling, now add up gear, gas, parts, gate and entry fees, so I would say at least $50k. It kept me out of trouble when I was young and gave me a work ethic so guess it's worth it...

You know that there has got to be at least one dude on here that has only ever spent $2.99 on cool little Moto Fox sticker for the back window of his 79 Vega Wagon.... You know, that one guy in the bar that used to race against Evel Knievel at the old Dirt & Gravity track at the top of the hill...?

I met that guy the other day at the quickie mart. He said his YZ-450 has 85 horsepower. That's pretty impressive isn't it?

It might take me awhile to figure up. It's a really big number to the power of ten. It would be cheaper to spend my weekends gambling and riding prostitutes.

Met a guy once that said when he lived out in Cali, he raced motocross against Jeff Ward and Ricky Carmicheal. I bet he was fast.

I can't even count the number of bikes I've had, so my figure would be ugly... and then throw in the big trucks I've had to buy, the gradual progression in trailers to campers to bigger and better ones..

Oh yeah, then throw the kids in there..

I don't even want to know! I've always enjoyed it and i've always tried to put myself on the best equipment that I can afford. As long as I can afford it, I will continue to ride and continue to update my equipment. I've tamed it back in the last 2 years by riding the same bike and not buying a brand new bike, not buying new gear until my old gear is worn out, and buying parts online at closeout prices.

On the flip side, the mechanical skills that I've gained working on bikes locally have been earning a supplemental income for me for the last 5 years or so. I added up some rough figures a year ago and I think i've made about $17,000 just working on bikes a few nights a week out of my own garage. It's to the point now where as long as I keep working on bikes, I make enough doing that to cover my costs for riding without going into the money that I make from my normal job.

Oh man, I hear you mxtech-don't want to know! I'm currently flogging a 2008 YZ250F, and I used to have a new bike every year, somehow..but I can't afford the knock anymore. I don't ride enough, and I'm not serious enough to justify the expense. I'm going to put a 269 kit in her over the winter, lube her up and ride her again next year. After owning and selling 40+ bikes and racing on and off since 1975, I would cry if I knew the total-ignorance is bliss. And I love it, so I don't think about it.

Having said that, if I came into some bank I would buy a KTM250sx in a fuckin heartbeat.

I've spent a lot but I wouldn't take anything for the 40 years of riding that I have enjoyed. I've had more fun than anyone I know!

Well, 2 bikes a year for atleast a decade, then 1 bike a year for 5 years.

30-50 tires a year for 15 years.

3-5 helmets a year for 15 years.

10-15 sets of gear at 50% off for 15 years

Oil, parts, gas, race gas, pipes, tanks etc. etc.

It would probably make me sick to add it up but it was worth it!

where on earth would you need 10-15 sets of kit a year that is just stupid

i have been riding since 73 and would hate to think what i have spent but here in the uk we are now paying £30 to practice and £40 to race so in one month i spend at least £200 and with diesel costing around £5.50 a gallon and most tracks being at least an hour drive so about £40 to get there so another £240 a month and add about £80 for fuel for the bike another £20 for the generator and jet wash and your doing over £4k a year before you even start on the bike kit spares etc
kit 2 lids aria's at £469 each
3 sets of kit £140 each
2 sets boots £345 each just over £2k

bike crf450 £6450 probably get £3k back so £3450
tyres at £90 a set x 10ish £900
oils around £400
So all in all around 11k a year without insurance for van tax mot and other costs like personal insurance
which works out at around $17500 a year

I agree with that. We did 13 years of racing with my son, I don't even want to add it up.

After I stopped racing motorcycles years ago and started racing cars I promised myself that I would never add up all of the reciepts for building and running the car...ever. It is one of the few vows I have kept.

This thread is the perfect place to apply the time honored maxim of "I spent most of my money racing motorcycles. The rest I wasted."

"where on earth would you need 10-15 sets of kit a year that is just stupid "

I used to race 20-25 off-road races a year as well as 8-12 motocross races. As well as ride 2-4 times a week year round. Gear takes a beating when you wear it for 100 miles at a time out through the sticks, in the mud etc. Unfortunately I had times where a brand new set of gear would only last 1 race maybe two.

There are people out there that ride and race as much as most people WISH they could, I was one of them for awhile, glad I'm not anymore though.
