Can some of the Euros chime in on this. I think some of my disliking for KTM comes from the prices of the bikes and the price for parts. The price of the bikes isn't significantly more but the price of the parts for the bike seems to be A LOT more. That was one of the main reasons that I chose to ride a Honda because the price of upkeep is less than the rest and that is without any discounts. So my question to the European community is what is the price comparison between KTM and the "Big 4" in Europe. I would assume that because of the location everything would be cheaper for KTM in Europe than it is in the USA. Just curious.

There was a thread a short while back that disproved that myth you have about the costs of KTM parts. Out of several comparisons of misc. comparable parts between several brands, the KTM was for the most part less expensive. Best part for myself is that when I place a call to Munn Racing 300 miles away from me here in Texas at 5:00 pm, the parts are sitting on my desk the following day. Have no idea how they keep pulling that off without special handling fees or overnight express freight but they've done it more than once. All the factory KTM parts I've ever ordered(some oddball) were always in stock. Honda chain adjuster bolts for my CR125.....well, the local Honda Powerhouse dealer in their multi story shiny new building with an elevator had to order them, three days out. Yamaha , Kawasaki or Suzuki parts locally? Forget about it, there will usually be nothing in stock and always a couple days to get them. KTM is the game changer here lately. Meanwhile back in Japan.....

My parts for the 200 and 525 we not out of line with the parts for my cr250 (smoker). Some more, some less. Not really different from the disparity between the big four that you see sometimes on parts.

I know our KTM shop was a lot better stocked that the Honda shop.

I think the dollar converts somewhat better against the euro than the yen at the moment and probably for awhile.

We are racing KTMs (the last 10 YRs) and Yamahas (the last 3Yrs). All 2-Strokes. Price wise it all about the same. We do not have a local dealer anymore but I do use dealers that support our series that we race in. I can tell you that Champion Cycles in Abingdon, VA has had every part I have ever needed in stock and they ship for a reasonable price. Cannot say that about the Yamaha. Shipping is not an issue but almost everything had to be ordered. KTM parts prices are in line with their Asian counter parts. Don't be misled by old stories on parts for KTMs. My experience - NOT TRUE! Besides if you do not want to pay the price for an OEM part there is plenty of aftermarket parts made for KTMs.

P.S. We can get YZ125s and YZ250s in Virginia and our dealers will order them too...

Oh really? Well maybe I am going off of old information. I just knew that while I was growing up the KTM stuff was always a lot more expensive. I will have to do a little research to find out. It is a BIG help to know that the local dealers have stuff in stock. That can be a big hastle. Thanks for the input.

Have never had the "local" dealer provide a good stock of parts, KTM or otherwise. Always needed to use a dealer that UPS'd the parts for next weekend.

The problem I have with KTM, is that they are using the offroad line, XC's, to support the mx side of their business. I can't justify spending $1400 more on an XC than the equilivant SX.

Well I just did a little research and I called a few local shops and for my 2010 CRF450R for a full top end which includes all the gaskets, new piston, new valves, springs, everything it was going to be about $600 after taxes with no discount or anything like that. For a 2010 KTM450SXF for a whole new top end it was going to be closer to a grand and I think that is before tax. Just from a maintenance point of view the KTMs are higher. I don't ride much so I only need to do a top end about once a year but $400 bucks is a lot. This is another point that keeps me from seeing KTM as a viable option for myself atleast.

And according to this comparison quote by "chili" from this thread, KTM was considerably less.

I can speak only about 85 cc`s and KTM is the most expensive, BUT it`s the best by far.

How is your local KTM shop doing on parts stock?

Our local KTM shop only carries KTM (and Husaberg) and they always seem to carry the parts I need.
There is no comparison between them and the Yamaha/Suzuki/Skido/..whatever whose standard answers is always "I'm going to have to order that"...
But that might be because the owner and all the other guys behind the counter are all moto enthusiasts. I see them competing at the local races. Don't know how old the owner is, probably in his 50's, but he shows up at the local HS enduro races on a pristine blue Penton. One of the first 10 imported in the country.

KTM prices are sometimes less, sometimes more. But overall I think they even out with Japanese, if not are less expensive overall. I deal with 3 Bros KTM out here in Orange County. They have had in stock every part I've needed so far. They and KTM also replaced for free no questions asked when my rear hub grenaded and trashed the hub, spokes, rear swingarm, rear sprocket, chain and chain guide block. This was after I had ridden my new 09' 450SX for approximately 1 month. I've never had that type of service and warranty replacement from a Japanese OEM nor dealer.

Warranty? KTM is excellent. About 6 years ago I had my sons 65SX motor go south 6 weeks after we got it and raced it. I was told there was a possible problem with the crank bearing that year. KTM replaced the crank and paid for all of the associated components - no questions asked. Only other time I had a manufacturer do this was with my '79 Maico.

You guys are forgetting a big variable in this. The KTM stuff outlasts the Jap stuff by at least 3 to 1. I had a 2002 KTM 125 I only ever put 1 piston in that thing a year. My Hondas I couldn't tell you how many I'd have to put in it. My '05 250F I've only ever done 2 pistons in my brothers Yamaha blew up after 3 hours and they stuck him with the bill. The quality of the parts is by far head and shoulders over the Japanese

i wish you guys could witness a tokyo subway. these fuckers magically wake up right at their stop and get off the train. i tried it. ended up going all teh way to the end of the line and the attendant woke me up.

+1, clutches, top ends, they last forever. Bolts are dirt cheap. Some parts are more expensive and some are downright cheap. I think it evens out. Plus most of your consumable you can use aftermarket, chains, sprockets, brake pads, cables, throttle cables anyway.

I drive an hour and a half to my KTM shop for parts because they always have parts. The local dealer where I purchased my bike doesn't even stock oil filters. I also had a 2000 YZ 250 and when I needed parts they had to order them. They have made their name as a Yamaha dealer. I use 417 Powersprorts for my KTM parts if I have time to drive, if I don't I have had awesome service from Munn Racing.

I am a KTM dealer and keep about $70,000 in parts in stock. All the usual wear stuff like brakes, plastics chains, sprockets. In fact if a customer wants sprockets I have several choises. Keep most top end parts and lots of assesories. I race so I have a good handle on what breaks. I'm not unusual as a KTM dealer either. Most specailize in MX and off road. its just a passion for most of us and I really enjoy being a KTM dealer. There is a Powerhouse Honda dealer very close to me and they have more invested in thier floor than I do in my whole building. But I will bet if you go there today they would not have a set of brake pads for a CRF in stock. I had a customer go there once and ask for filter oil and they had to get a tech from the back to explain what he wanted. Big 4 dealers that are really onto MX and off road are getting harder and harder to find.

I had a customer go there once and ask for filter oil and they had to get a tech from the back to explain what he wanted.

The local Honda dealer is the same way. I went to get fork oil and the guy didn't know what a dual chamber fork was (and quoted me $7 for a shim. I'm not even sure what he thought a shim was)

Its funny that people think only the big shops have parts in stock. sometimes its the opposite. the big shops only carry clothing. clothing looks impressive on the showroom, but if you go to one of these smaller, mom and pop type shops you will be surprised to find that they have that clutch cable for your son's KX85 in stock, where the big money backed shop had to order it. these smaller shops are owned by riders, a lot of times. I cant stand going into those multi line shops that carry all 4 japanese and some of the euro brands too. Im not impressed by a bunch of clothing displays. and there are 15 workers in a competition to see who will be the sucker to have to wait on you. they will look busy so they dont make eye contact with the customer. once they make eye contact they are obligated to say something. so they try to ignore you. OK rant over. support your local dealer, one that is small enough to HAVE TO care about you.

I had an 05 KTM, the silencer broke which caused the motor to get hot and ruin the head gasket. My KTM dealer and KTM warrantied it no questions asked and the dealer kept the stock silencer that KTM shipped and gave me an aftermarket one at no cost.

My next new bike will be a KTM
