Nice. Imagine how bummed you would be if you just spent $9.000.00 or more on a new bike and someone has the nerve to scrub the next jump after passing you on a 20 year old 500?
Don't need luck, just need him to strap his left leg to his ass
Damn BobbyM that`s impressive. Had I waited a couple more minutes before posting I might have said something different. But then again you probably waited to post the video to see what idiot would bite first. You still got it going on.
Make me wonder why they ever bothered with a 450 4 stroke.
Because a 4-stroke 450 is far easier to ride? It cracks me up how nostalgic people get over something like this. These things weren't even popular when they were new. The bike wasn't good and while the kid riding it is doing okay he isn't lighting the world on fire. The same kid could probably turn faster laps on a 125.
Those guys on 4-strokes getting passed probably don't feel any worse than when a fast kid on an 80 blows by them. Should they all quit and go home in shame?

I always liked the 500s and was sad to see them go so I am one of those people that enjoy the nostalgia. but, I'd have to agree with your comments in general.

Have you ridden a 500? I've ridden a CR500 in a modern frame and the whole time I was thinking this is pretty much a 450. A 450 isn't easier to ride like a 125 is easier to ride than a 250F. The 500 has tons of low-end and mid range providing the traction of a 450. The only thing is it signed off a little early, but all you have to do is shift.
I'm personally not nostalgic at all, for the 500s. I got into the sport after they were cut from the nationals, and by the time I could ride big bikes, there were none being produced. But after riding one with a decent set-up I couldn't help but wonder why the companies just didn't invest in modernizing their 500s, that were left unchanged for 13+ years. It would have saved them and the consumers a lot of R&D dollars. But thanks to the AMA there was no place for them in professional motocross racing so the companies abandoned an awesome motorcycle.
And that guy was cruising on that thing. I think he rode that heavy, ill suspended beast pretty damn good. I think its a stretch to say he could have turned faster times on a 125 (definitely not the same year). even a 250F... watch it with the sound off and look at the momentum hes carrying. At first I thought he was coasting a lot (no throttle) but I bet it was a chore to get that thing slowed down, and probably the reason why hes taking outsides everywhere.

250F is much "easier" to ride than a 125. 450 is "easier" to ride than a 250 2stroke or a 500 2stroke. By saying "easier" most people mean more forgiving. No need to be in the perfect gear the torque of the 4stroke will just pull right on out. 500 have plenty of torque but the hard hit when you hit the power band is what made them harder to ride than 450s. The 450s just pull evenly pretty much all the way thru where the 500 pulls out of the corner even if your in too high of a gear but when it gets near that powerband you better be holdin on cause that thing will rip right out from you if your not ready for it. (seen it happen to a few people and its hilarious!) 500's had alot more people scared riding them than enjoying riding them. Things ripped!
Traction on any 2 stroke 125 250 500 whatever it may be will never be nearly as good as traction on a 4 stroke due to the 2 stroke firing every stroke up and the fourstroke has that little extra delay between fires.
4 strokes in general are just more forgiving motors where you dont need to be up in the rpms, or in the exact gear or you can relax and still make the 4 stroke pull hard everywhere. The 2 stroke you need to stay agressive, on the pipe, and in the right gear to keep the bike in peak horsepower making the 4 stroke an "easier" bike to ride.
That being said one of my dream bikes is still a 500AF. got my 450, 250smoker already now just need to work on that 500AF and life will be perfect. Although I am leaning toward a KTM300 pretty badly.

" These things weren't even popular when they were new. The bike wasn't good." Jeff Ward in 1989 & 1990, Mike Kiedrowski in1992 and Mike Larocco in 1993 may disagree with your statement after they won the 500 MX championships.
Also, Larry Rosseler, Danny LaPorte, Pual Krause, Ted Hunnicutt, Danny Hamel, Garth Sweetland, Paul Ostbo, Ty Davis and Marty Smith may also disagree about the KX 500 not being a good bike after the mighty KX500 consecutively won the Baja 1000 from 1988-1996.
The KX500 may be the most dominant dirt bike of all time.
I took my CR500R out to Budds Creek last year and we all took turns on it between riding our 450's. Most of my buddies were amazed how fast they could go on the old beast. For me yes my YZ450F was easier to ride because the power is indeed easier to handle but you could pretty much ride the whole track in third gear on the 5-honey and go pretty damn fast. The main thing that slows you down is the brakes not the power. My 1990 CR500R has all the power any one south of RC could ever need but man brakes have come a LONG way in 20 years.
