She can ride ok. She use to ride my KLX110L all the time and she use to go trail riding on a yz125 but i think it was a little to big for her. I just picked up a 2012 KTM250sx and got my daughter a new 2009 ktm 50 JR. I would like to stick with a ktm since that is what we ride. She weighs about 120 pounds and is 5"3. Should I be looking at an 85 or do they still make the 105?

I think they made a KTM 105 SX the 2011's were roughly $5499.00 (that is what my friend google told me).
Go around to some dealerships and have her sit on bikes and see what she likes
Or if you got any friends with bikes that may fit what you are looking for, have them let her get on it and see what she thinks, power wise etc.

I have a used 04 KX100 that would fit her great.

Stick with the 110L. That way she can ride hard or take it easy without fouling a plug. And if she crashes she probably won't eat it so hard.

If you get rid of the stock bars, get a diff footpeg mount (and possibly get a tall seat depending on whats comfortable for her) it should be great. Plus you can get diff motor/suspension work done if she wants.

105, and if she has a hard time with the power band, put double reeds in, that helps with the low end. Then take sheet metal, cut a circle out the size of the exhaust pipe entrance. Put a hole in it about 1/2 the size of the original hole. Place said made exhaust washer inbetween exhaust manifold and pipe. That bike will top out like a 4 stroke, have low about equal to a 110 and have a motor that will last for ever. It only will rev about half the RPM's of original, but still be faster than a 110 4 stroke. My wifes CR85 is done like that. She loves it. Had a DRZ pastrana replica, that she didn't like, too heavy and hard to start.

My wife weighs about 110lbs and is 5ft 3in tall. We looked at 85's but my wife wanted more power. She rode a 125 but it was to tall. A 250F she couldn't start. We thought about the Yamaha WR250 with E-Start but again, it was to tall. We also thought about the Honda CRF150R but settled on the KX100. This is her second one. The height is perfect and she can start it with no problem. This picture is from a hare-scrambles race about a year ago.

Don't waste your time with 85's or a 125 unless she is really fast. My daughter is the same size and I got her a yz250f, cut the seat foam, lowered the rear by shortening the sub frame. The bike is about 3-4" shorter now and she loves it and can start it easy. Of course an electric start would've been even better.

Be prepared to clean power valves and have lots of spark plugs handy. If your going for a 105 make sure to put a flywheel weight and try the G2 throttle cam system, those two worked really good for making more linear power on my girls 85 big wheel.

Denn.....if you love her , get her something small like an XR100.....if you hate her.....get her a 450 of some type and take her out to the track.

Seriously Denn......I just thought of this. If she likes the 4 stroke power , you could get a CRF150. I rode one of those little suckers and it actually surprised me how much power one of them little bikes put out. You could mellow it out a little with some exhaust as well.

all I say is make sure it's an electric start, my brother bought his wife a honda, with an electric start, she loves the bike and how easy it is to start makes it even more fun for her to ride !

For a girl her size I would recommend a CRF150RB. We bought my girlfriend one and she loves it. Heck I love to ride it because it rips for a mini bike but can be rode mellow when she wants. Here she is with me at Washougal

I am selling my bike with all the short people mods included.

$1,000 YZ250F 2002 with a short seat, and soft springs for 130 lb rider.

I just installed an Auto Compression release, new timing chain and valves are in spec.

$1,000 is my asking price

YOu could find a very cheap TTR125 that is lightly used.. But, from experience those bikes are awkward riding and aren't very powerful

**** Just saw the nooo 4 stroke post***

Have you considered a KLX 140L? At 5'3" your wife would likely feel comfortable without feeling cramped (so to speak). E-start, front and rear disc brakes, 5 speed, "big bike" bars & grips, and suspension that can handle quite a thrashing, provided she's not clearing triples or hammering the whoops.

The engine is almost bullet-proof, and it responds nicely to exhaust and jetting changes. Power delivery is very smooth and manageble, especially when compared to an 85. The only real disadvantage is weight (195 lbs), but it's hard to notice once off the stand, due to its linear power delivery and size.

It's a great move up from the 110, as they share characteristics. I ride a standard 140, and my friend (6'1", 220) has an L, and we race like it's Hannah and Howerton! As much fun, if not more, than the big bikes.

A CRF150RB Big Wheel would be best, but if you want to put her on a 2-stroke get a KX100.

By the way, I unfortunately am selling my wifes 06 CR85RB $1200 modded like I said for you too do (or can easily be put back to stock), because this economy. If you are in Dallas, you should come and test ride it, just to see that the mods are good as I've said, even if you aren't interested in a CR85RB. The mods are easy to remove too. The 85 does not have a power valve, and have never fouled a plug, and my wife is a true beginner, never getting out of second gear. So whoever claims that, doesn't know how to jet a 2 stroke.

very true. I always laugh when guys say that two strokes dont idle for more than 30 seconds. Mine always would sit on the stand and idle all day.

My thoughts exactly. On my wife's KX100, we've never fouled a plug. Remember the KDX200 of the 90's? 2-stroke! One of the best trail bikes of all time.

They make these in a 125, they're very compact for a full size bike and fit smaller riders well.

KTM redisigned the impeller, it is now smaller and moves the water slower to give it more time to cool. The new one is $5 and it takes ten min to install. It used to over heat every ride, and kill the stater. Now he has only overheated it once in deep ass mud.

my wife is bout 120 pounds and 5'4. i bought her an rm 125 cos she wanted to ride on mx tracks and do jumps. she fouled a couple of plugs when she first got it but that was a lot to do with the rich jetting it had when i bought it. i would all the preload off the rear shock and changed the spacers in the forks that the spring sit against and slid the forks as far through the clamps as the bars will allow.

she can touch the ground ok and can start it fine. she loves riding it. she took a friends yz 85 for a spin and said it was harder to ride cos the engine was peakier and it wasnt as stable

I think the bike that's getting overlooked here is Kawasaki's KLX 140L. significantly lighter, and lower seat height than a Honda 150F, disk front and rear... I had a chance to ram around on one, cool bike. I'd like to have one. Great pit bike, trail bike, woman's bike. Not too tall or heavy, friendly 4-stroke motor with decent displacement. Check it out.
