This is a very famous race. RJ goes down in the 1st turn and has to come from last place to win the main event over Guy Cooper on the last light.

Is this the race where Jason Upshaw does the front flip off his bike? Or was that 1986?

I just noticed the video is only 13 minutes so it must just be the main. Upshaw flipped in the heat or semi I think.

85 or 86.... Crazy get off for sure! During the Semi I believe.

The 87 SX race was awesome! RJ catching Cooper with one lap to go. Great race!!

The start was real short into the right hand turn. Second gear from the gate, shift to third and then into the first turn! Fun race too.

Great race, How bout RJ holding a can of Coors when getting interviewed I know Coors was a sponser but how many riders would actully drink a beer on the podium anymore, although it didn't really show him drinking it, I would guess he did I know I would have.

Do you have 87 Phoenix? I was there- would be cool to see. One jump was off a flatbed trailer.

I have the 1986 Phoenix race that i should have up tonight or tomorrow. It has perhaps the WORST track even seen in a supercross.

Nice. I think I remember that race. I'll have to see if my dad still has all the beta tapes we used to record all the races on back in the 80's.

Wow, that gave me chills!

Kinda wish Guy could have got the win, but it's awesome to see how stoked he was with that one handed whip over the finish!

Such a shame the video is now "unavailable" one of the best sx races ever.....like a dog on a piece of meat! Got a pic of rj making the pass on coops...if anybody happen's to have a link to the race somehow that would be great thanks...

That was an awesome race. RJ was doing the inside to inside on the switchbacks and i believe there was some controversy over this. RJ was an will always be the man

a really good documentary is "Rick Johnson, Profile of a Champion." It covers his Honda days until 1988 in an excellent manner. I used to watch that over and over as a 16 year old kid. RJ was a great guy to look up to and still is.
