Seriously none of you have thought about the stupidest mx innovation ever? Is anything more stupid than that frame and twin cylinder engine????

Pffft, face masks and chest protectors are over-rated.

Dumbest innovation? All of them that contribute to $9k bikes. That RM cost me $1,300 new in '82. That's equivalent to $3,044.07 in today's money. It's no wonder that the gates were so full back then, and so empty today.

He convinced Honda to start to develop it but they shelved it due to cost.

I love the 2nd photo Kawi pants on a Suzuki and the Espirit boots. That's when racing was about racing and who cared what you wore.

Sorry, this is the "stupidest innovations" thread, not the "revolutionary works of machine art" thread.

Back then the bikes were cheap and gear was expensive. Just the opposite of today.

Does anyone here really like riding a 125 better than a 250f? 125s are painfully slow. They are fun to throw down a few laps on, but a 250f makes more power, and it makes it in a superior fashion. Plus, if you're not a little bit8h, then you can throw a 250f around like it's a BMX bike. Like riding a 250f, the best part about a two stroke is that you can wring it out and be really aggressive on it. I assume this is why people like the 250 two stroke over the 450. However, the problem is that you can't handle a 450 and use all of the power that it makes, so you like the slower bike (250 two stroke) and think that the bike that you're not fast / skilled / strong enough to ride is the worst thing to happen to motocross. The problem is you, not the 450. Go buy a 250f that you can actually handle and throw around, or get a 450 and work on your bike handling skills and strength so that you can actually ride it properly. Either way, quit your whining.

And if you're going to complain about cost, just factor in the extra cost of four-strokes in the big scheme of how much it costs to go racing these days with gas, truck payments and service, gear, injuries, and everything. The % increase is miniscule.

Or keep whining. Either way I'll keep it on the rev limiter on my 250f, having a blast, while you roll jumps on a 450 you bought because you think you're faster than you really are and needed the extra horsepower cause you're fat.

yup 125's suck. I own one, and have gone to extreme lengths to get off the stupid thing, i'm in the middle of trying to sell it, and i switched my plastics onto my dads 250 2 stroke. he hasn't even noticed, (he might sell me the bike, and he hasn't ridden it in almost 2 years) anything that is 250 cc's or over is fun, thats my opinion. Sure some people can haul on a 125, but having all the power you need, and taking different lines, vs wringing the life out of a 125 on all the outside lines all day is more fun. but really, nothing handles like a 125, feels like a friggen bmx after riding a 250

Noticed Scott Murray is one of their sponsored riders for "Pro Model". Wonder if that visor gives him easier rotation on the double flip.

Please list the "stupid innovations" on this bike for me. Other than the 1/8th ton pig factor(which Yamaha innovated with the YZ400F), the fact that it is a four stroke and the fact that they released it before working the bugs out(which really wasn't an innovation).
The air filter was behind the front number plate. I thought that used to cause a lot of problems by getting too dirty too fast.

The bike usually didn't run long enough to get the filter dirty so it actually wasn't an issue.
