It has been around racing for years. In the 70`s and 80`s there were several late model dirt car owners busted. Some small Nascar and Drag racing owners and sometimes drivers busted. An FBI agent once said "Everyone in racing is not involved in drugs,but everyone involved in drugs is in racing".

1986 Indianapolis Rookie of the Year was suspected of being involved in "The Company" and served time in the cell next to my stepbrother in Leavenworth. Small world, Randy had mutual friends with my stepbrother. Motorsports and illegal funding have been tied together since the beginning of time.

Dakar Drugs bust
Paul Bird, Team Owner, is a former motocrosser who raced in the British Champs & Northern centre during 80's & 90's. His family own Bird's Poultry nr Penrith, Cumbria, one of the largest chicken farms in UK, supplying approx 10,000 birds a day to major supermarket chains. It's a big profitable business. Paul's a good guy, not short of money and he has run BSK & WSB teams for many years with major outside sponsors.
Sounds like someone planted drugs or a team mechanic/helper got greedy. If the team were deeply involved in drugs, I'm sure the WSB, FIM would suspend them from competing.
I have no reason to suspect he had any knowledge of this until they were searched!

Happened a few years ago to a Britsh Race Transport builder who hired a rig out to some Russian riders to do the GP's & Internationals. The truck got stopped in Italy and searched and they found a bunch of coke on board.

The British guy got pulled in because the rig was registered to him but later was released

Funny you say that, in the 80's I went to the Austrian GP, Billy Liles and Phil Larson were racing it. Phil's team, an Italian bunch, were over him, he just wasn't agreeing with the European way of life. Well when it was time for him to go back to Italy, the team manager told him to go a certain way home, through a certain border. Well we all thought it seemed fishy, and later on they found weed stashed (planted) on his box-van (Euro truck) which would have them throw him in jail. It ended up in a bad way, not that part of it but the part where the team kicked him to the curb with nothing but the shirt on his back, he had nothing, no money no nothing, I don't even think he got to bring home his personal belongings, he had to get home via his mom helping him. It was ugly and it will always stay in my mind, not a big fan of trusting Italians, and I don't want to generalize, so I'll say promoters and team owners. I got a thank you note from Phil's mom a few months later, thanking me for helping her son while I was there, I didn't do much, but knew enough Euro's to have them re-route him to a different border and get him back to his apartment in Italy safely. The language barrier can be a bitch when you're American.

Yeah I remember all that going down, there were some shifty teams out of Italy back in those days.

That is actually a pretty good idea... Atleast if you are a big piece of shit. Who would ever think to check a race teams rig for narcotics?

So did he go home with the weed , toss it, cross the border with it, smoke it, sell it what happened to it ?

I have no idea what happened to the weed?? I just know it wasn't on the truck when he crossed the border. You don't mess around with any kind of drugs in another country, just too much of a risk, Lechien, Bailey and O'Mara can attest to that.

Five arrested after Coast drug op

3:38p.m. 3rd February 2009

Queensland police have charged five people and seized more than $6 million worth of property after a year-long drug operation on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

The haul included 11 high performance drag-racing vehicles - six drag cars and five motorbikes - which were seized at Yatala, south of Brisbane, police said.

Earlier today, 15 search warrants were executed on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and Brisbane with one also in NSW.

A Narangba man, described as a prominent member of the drag racing community, was due to appear in court today.

The Australian Crime Commission and the Crime and Misconduct Commission were also involved in the operation, which Detective Superintendent John Pointing said had broken a significant network generating a large amount of drugs and cash.

Five people arrested have been charged with 17 offences.

i know people that take drugs with them on riding trips to belgium and the netherlands, and back into the uk.

they hide them down the bikes exhaust or in their kit, and somehow theyve never been caught.
