Same as always. Webb was about the 4th or 5th best guy last night, and all his competition yet again embarrassed themselves in throwing it away and handing the win over to a second tier guy. I'm not gonna hide, and nothing about last night is at all inconsistent with anything I have said. My main contention is that Webb only wins when the top tier guys hand it to him, which is exactly what happened here.
The guy is a 3 time Champ for a reason, and while he has talent, it is all about the grind.
Its never over.
Idk man I’m a big Webb fan, but he wasn’t riding that great last night. I get the point is that he’s always there and a win is a win. I’m not taking that away from him, I love the guy and hope he goes on a run. But to say his riding was deserving of a win….eh. He needs to improve more to be a real contender this year unfortunately. I hope this was the a confidence boost though and we see a Webb run!
3 X champ with 31 wins, 3 wins behind RD. If that’s the definition of mediocrity and dumb luck, I’d take that all day long and twice on Sunday. Name any retired pro behind him on the all time wins list with less than 3 championships that wouldn’t take those numbers. Left off current pros intentionally because they still have the opportunity to do better if they can stay healthy and rack up wins. 🤦
Who were the 3 or 4 riders better than him? I'll concede that Tomac was faster and probably wins the OA had he not went OTB in race 2. But aside from that, Webb was hauling. I guess you could argue Hunter may have had a slight edge as well, although I'd say most of that was due to track position. But I roll my eyes at this notion that Webb is just slow and has no business winning. He was able to straight-up beat Roczen for the OA win in race 3. Are you implying Roczen is a scrub?
"A second tier guy"
Now do Outdoors...
I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were talking about outdoors when you commented on Webb's win at the Houston supercross.
Wait, all along you’ve been making the point that Webb has lucked into his success indoors because he is 2nd rate. Statistics clearly show otherwise. Nobody in here has made claims about his outdoor prowess. Now you want to pivot and change the subject to outdoors?
You hate Cooper Webb, we get it dude!
Yeah...for being a "second tier guy", he's in pretty great company.
Webb is an awesome rider. He's not always the fastest guy but in a long series he is super consistent and at the end of the day championships are all that matters. Webb reminds me a lot of Jeff Stanton indoors. Stanton wasn't always the fastest as Bradshaw and JMB would routinely beat him. But, Stanton has 3 SX championships. Stanton has a total of 17 wins in SX. In his championship years he had 5 in 1989, 4 in 1990 and 3 in 1992. The dude was super consistent. Webb is consistent... racking up 31 wins is no joke.
I keep asking the same question, and none of you Webb defenders can provide an answer. What superstar of the sport has ever been completely and entirely irrelevant in the premier class in one of the two disciplines? Webb is second tier for this reason, together with the fact that all of his wins have happened because the guys faster than him have made big mistakes. He does not take wins for himself, he accepts them as gifts from his competitors.
Edit: And honestly, I would be fine with it if he wasn't so disgustingly arrogant after being handed so much.
Yes, he is a unique case in that he's probably the only rider in history to amass all-time great statistics in one discipline, but have virtually nothing to show for in the other (limited to premier class). That is why as an overall racer, he's not on the level of Dungey, Villopoto, Tomac, etc, as they all were elite in both disciplines. But nobody is claiming that he should be ranked as high as those guys all-time, outdoors included.
You initially made the claim that he never wins by his own merit in SX. People refuted that claim, and then you create a fake argument that we're saying he's elite overall, both disciplines included. Nobody is saying that. We are simply saying that in SX, the guy has won 31 races and 3 championships, which is impossible for a second-rate guy to do. No, he's not the fastest rider of all time. But, for the most part, he avoids injuries and consistently strings together very, very good performances. Is that not a valid way to win to you? Some of the GOATs in other sports won this same way. Tom Brady never necessarily made the most jaw-dropping plays you'd ever see, but he consistently made the right decisions and delivered in crucial situations year after year. Novak Djokovic might not have the pristine grace of Roger Federer or the raw power and athleticism of Rafael Nadal, but he willed his way to GOAT status through consistency, fitness, and mental resilience.
Also, Webb IS able to kick it up a notch and straight-up beat someone when he needs to... see Indy, Seattle, or Pittsburgh SX 2025. Those wins were not handed to him... he straight-up beat Sexton in each of those, supposedly one of the first-tier guys who are a league above him, based on your own logic.
Pit Row
I had to explain this in the other thread too. MC wasn’t racing anybody relevant in MX especially when he won his single MX title. See stats from screenshot. Also why are you still talking about MX in an SX thread?
I don't even know where to begin on how idiotic your arguments are. MC finished top three in points in the premier class outdoors in '94, '95, '96, and '97, including a dominant championship in '95, yet you want to say he was as irrelevant as Webb outdoors. Webb has never finished in the top three in a 450 outdoor series, and has one overall to his name, compared with 15 overall wins for McGrath. You can continue to embarrass yourself if you'd like, but I suggest you tuck your tail and lay low.
Also, I'm not commenting on a SX thread, I'm commenting on a Webb thread. Why is it that you feel the need to discredit the pointing to facts that hurt your feelings? Seems like you know you don't have an actual argument.
I want to see Webb pull one of his late race charges for a win when he is 3-5 seconds down with 2-3 minutes to go.
