How do you do it? I was at our practice turn track this weekend and logging my laps on my Garmin watch. The problem is that I have to come to a complete stop, hit stop and then scroll down on the watch to hit lap and finally hit resume when it's time to do another lap. Each lap I have the variables of how fast I start and how fast I stop and hit the button, plus I can't just pound lap after lap which is what I'd like to do.
Is there any way that I can set it up so I can connect these laps without stopping?
Autolap…
Check your watch for Auto Lap "by position". Not all Garmin products have it, most are Auto Lap "by distance" which doesn't really work well for moto laps.
Which watch do you have?
I have the 255.
I plug the watch into my laptop and grab the FIT file from the /garmin/activity folder on the watch then upload it to a strava account after each mountain bike ride or MX day. If you make a segment in strava, or if one exists at your track, it will capture your lap times there. I made one for the track we rode Sunday.
You can set the watch up with your Garmin app on your phone, or via wifi to upload automatically to Strava or other such services including Garmin's own service. I just like to do computer things in old-school and clunky ways for some reason.
My friend who got me into the Garmin watch this summer had the Fenix 6 model and loaned me his old Fenix 3 a month ago... He has a motorsports app on there with a motocross activity. I think that's something I can get on my 255 as well. It does do automatic laps. We were at the track Sunday and he was showing me that you had to start the lap at a place where two lanes of track won't be close enough to trigger the lap at the wrong time. He wanted to see my lap times on a new 350F vs my YZ250.
I use Litpro to automatically set up laps from the data from my Polar Vantage watch. I really really like it. It costs 3 bucks a month for LitPro and it goes to a company that is about moto, so the cost is no issue to me.
The downside is I can't see the data live on my watch. Gotta transfer it to the phone then sync it all up. Is good for looking back over a moto but it's not real time feedback.

Luxon 4-Post Bar Mounts

DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
I was not aware that Lit Pro worked with other GPS devices, I thought you had to pony up for their dedicated GPS unit.
If it works with Polar, it probably would work with Garmin?
I feel like that would be better than Strava since, as you said, it's a moto company.
Daily exercise on the mountain bike was my reason for the Garmin watch, but it's a great tool for moto as well.
I have a Fenix 5s. I haven't found the autolap feature. I need to go down the YouTube rabbit hole.
On mine it is menu - settings - activities & apps - (select the activity) - activity settings - auto lap
My friend's Feinx 6 is the same.
My Forerunner 255 doesn't have that laps by location option under bicycle ride, but I haven't explored Garmin's additional apps and widgets that can be downloaded to the watch. I may be able to add that (or not).
Either auto lap or LitPro or search the 'F3B Motorsports' lap timer app from the Garmin Connect IQ store, free to download then it's like a one-off a few bucks (or pounds here) to activate it.
Pretty cool... Go to this link and scroll down to "Supported GPS Devices". Now I know:
https://litprolive.com/pages/gps-precision
Pretty sure that's what my buddy had on his watch. I'll see if I can find that from Garmin.
Good call on the supported devices list, I don't have any interest in the watches besides lap timing so I cheaped out first time... got a watch that isn't supported for practically anything 😂
Bought an old Fenix 3 specifically for the bike after that.
Those F3B folks seem to do all sorts of stuff, even saw a weightlifting one (I'm not even almost smart enough to understand how that works).
Motorsports+ app from Garmin apps will track your laps by position.
In Europe, we use Crossbox and it's pretty much the best tool you could be looking for as an MX rider IMO.
I use MX Buddy and my apple watch (or xgps160). It's a one time fee and I find I get just as much out of it as LITPro. I also use MX Buddy to track bike maintenance. LitPro is very easy and I believe you can use a free or discounted version with certain gps if you only want lap times. I suggest getting a dedicated GPS (Racer Box Mini) and using LitPro or MX Buddy. It's definitely the most accurate, smallest GPS unit you can get. You can also get jump stats from it.
Does it have a built in defib for us old timers?
XGPS160 and mxbuddy app. Buried the GPS in crossbar pad. Though at my speed a sundial would be sufficient

I use a Garmin Watch to record the moto's. I upload to Strava and create a segment that is a complete lap.
Pit Row
Apple Watch ultra and LitPro app. Works great, just start an outdoor cycling workout, and that is it.
I have a like new XGPS160 i'll make you a good deal on if you want to go the LitPro route!
Garmin watch synced with Strava. Add public segment (lap) to your track and you can see lap times after you save and sync. Top 10 listings with all others using Strava (if they have public excercises)
For live timing I use old Android phone mounted in bar and Racechrono app. Lap times, section times, optimal lap from best sections...
Both 100% free
I use a garmin Fenix 5s. Been using the Mx Buddy app for years. One time fee and it collects tons of data that you can analyze. 10/10 recommend Mx Buddy app.
LitPro with a Polar Vantage M.
I don’t get super into the data but it’s great info, and super rewarding/motivating to see times improve.
Mypitboard.com
works beautifully and you get live info as you are riding. i love it
