don't worry - this thread isn't really about Prado at all. I have been following this sport for almost 4 decades, and can't seem to think of a situation from the past that even comes close to this - can YOU? You guys are encyclopedias of MX history so I was wondering if anything to THIS level of a debacle has ever occurred in the past?
Would love to hear details.
James Stewart switching from Yamaha to Suzuki mid-2012 comes to mind. I think things also went south for Chad Reed at Kawi in 2010?
Didn't Roczen go sour on Honda publicly before leaving?
Kdub retired from Suzuki mid-season. But that wasn't all bike related. But he just dipped out. Only to come back a year later ripping a Honda 450 and the rest was history.
No. I think his dad did, though.

Magoo on Kawasaki.
Marty Tripes quit Husqvarna just before the last race in '74 to join team CanAm to give that team a clean sweep of the top three in the 250 class that year.
i remember that but he went out by yard sailing while racing his ass off. I know he hated the bike...but this Prado deal is way different.
It is exactly the same, Prado just smart enough not to yardsale his body for a impossible project…
Will be interresting to see Chase race this ”green pig” next year since team kaw wont let him change the bike much. For sure no KYB fork!
He broke his femur. Would have been out the rest of the year anyway, and it was a 01-02 contract.
Those bikes were good.
He was sick, but I don't think he gelled with the bike either. Was a mutual part ways.
Hannah 1981. He told Yamaha flat out it was a POS. The next year he went to Honda and won.
Hannah went to Honda in 83.
Hannah, Stewart, Marquez had/have the hearts of lions. They raced bikes they hated to within an inch of their lives.
Thomas Covington, but compared to Prado we never really heard why he was like that in the US. From a top 3 MX2 GP winning rider to struggling and rolling around in SX lcq races which completely broke him, being a 25-30th place outdoor rider after that, tried half a season in 450 MXGP and then retired after being a 20-30th place rider again.
With Prado at least we have seen good starts and glimpses of his speed (Southwick for example). With Thomas there sadly was nothing positive since he went to the US. Hope he is doing fine post retirement, he definitely married a hot one, that's for sure.
Kenny definitely did aswell. I think he even posted pictures of his bike breaking in practice on social media which nobody was happy about obviously. 2022 was weird year for him for sure, but he still won a couple races tho.
'It ran like a stinkin' 80." I think that was actually 1982. The new watercooled 125. Nothing even close to this mess though.
Bradshaw and Yamaha, but I think that was burnout and pressure, not the bike.
Pourcel and Motoconcepts in 2011comes to mind
Pit Row
ummm...impossible project?
Mitchell Harrison came from behind to beat prado in one race at Unadilla and finished 14th to Prados 12th, and Harrison was on a ...wait for it...KAWASAKI
Yes, a stock-ish Kawi.
Sorry to say but a rider of his caliber (no hate) would get the same result on any slightly modded bike.
Possibly he would do worse on Prados bike, who knows.
Honestly I think James complaining about that bike was valid, I go back and watch those races and the bike looks wildly unbalanced and scary. Jorge’s situation seems quite different imo
Rowing in the 2004 Olympics
Google Lay down Sally
That was also a 2011 Yamaha so I’ll forgive him
Thinking a factory Kawi is a bad bike just because Prado didn't gel with it is a goofy take. Anderson finished 5th in SX & MX last year on the same bike and had several podiums indoor and out.
Please, You do know its not the same bike?
JK Yamaha team bike perform better than Factory Yamaha bikes in MXGP, even Fantic does. Riders wants OFF the bike. It's so bad, Renxau is on the 2022 chassi.
You can not compare a factory bike and say it should be good because a stock bike is. Both Yamaha, Suzuki (and Kawi?) have fucked up their factory bikes in both AMA and US to the level that stock bike has been better when riders have jumped on them.
Stock bike on privateer team you can change whatever you want. You are not allowed to do that on the factory bike. By default, you are more limited to preselected parts and setups.
Steve Wise raced the factory KX125 for 2 rounds and quit the team. Took a stock CR125 of his Dad's showroom floor and they started modifying it. A few races later won a 125 National. To this day I think he is the only privateer to win a 125/250 National.
Gauthier PAULIN with the Honda on 2015 MXGP, he was not very confortable on this bike but kept a good attitude and never complained in public.
Prado is setting himself up for a tough future in this sport. If he comes out on the KTM and is not in the top 3 he will never get a ride again.
Marvin Musquin switched from the private Ngs Honda team to the factory ktm team mid season 2009 when he was leading the mx2 championship riding for a private team. Don’t remember the exact details but it was something that he didn’t get payed from the team, it ended in court and because of that he missed some rounds also that year if I remember correctly.
I think 1997 Larocco tried to quit Suzuki right before Pontiac Sx. Jeff Stanton even took a CR250 to his house to try. Decoster basically said your under contract so you still ride Suzuki.
Post a reply to: Prado - comparisons in the past?
