Everyone pronounces his name like it rhymes with ropes. He’s Brazilian so I’m sure it’s low-pez

Interesting. Never heard such a pronunciation of lopes before. Varies to the Spanish style

Brazil’s language isn’t Spanish. It’s Portuguese.

Of all the people I would expect to see on Vital today I have to admit I didn't have Davey Lopes on my B-I-N-G-O card.

Nice and obscure, I like it.

I used to work with a Lopes who pronounced it the same as Enzo.

Exactly why I said it varies. An observation

It is, for whatever reason, a slightly irritating adjustment, I agree. That said, rhymes with Ropes it is.

The pronunciation is more like law-pez down here.

Being Portuguese, I can verify growing up near a Lopes family (like ropes).

My wife is Brazilian and I have tried to figure out how they pronounce words in freaky deaky portuguese for 17 years… I still don’t get it! Its like the language is a mixture of Spanish, French, and Italian that doesn’t follow any rules that you are used to in Spanish. Funniest part is she can’t explain it either, there is no rhyme or reason to it. R’s are pronounced “HE”, most the time but not all of the time, sometimes they do the slight rolled R sound. So in other words I gave up on learning it long ago and let her do the talking… but she is Brazilian so that comes natural to them wether you want them to do it or not!

I was reading a story about a plane crash and told my wife about it. I read the headline that said "10 Brazilian dead in a plane crash outside of Rio."

She started crying uncontrollably and the only words she could get out were "Is a Brazilian more than a billion."

Ba dum tsss

I'll see myself out.

"no rhyme or reason"

Sounds like English.

I think he’s got the best personality of any kid out there. He’s a breath of fresh air. He says whatever he wants. Pretty funny kid.

I'm half portuguese... Portuguese people would technically pronounce it, "Lopsh"...

In France, we would say Lo-Pez. My mom's name is Rodrigues. Same thing, in Portugal, with the "shh" sound at the end. In France, we say it just like in spanish with the "Guez" sound.

Lopes vs Lopez

1/27/2023 8:37pm

Same thing with Barcia, should be pronounced like Garcia 😂

I think that’s a (likely northern) Italian name, so could be Barcha. Cianciarulo is closer to Chan-cha-rulo, too.

While we’re on the topic, Italian last names are pretty common in MX: Barcia, Cianciarulo, Villopoto, Alessi, Catanzaro, Nicoletti, Pauli, and more I can’t remember. Italian heritage makes up about 5% of American demographics but more than doubled that in pro MX. Not sure why.
