Anyone here feel this is a good thing? As a Canadian its very concerning. On the surface it appears to be a shitty deal for consumers on both sides of the border. Im sure there are some Google economists on here with an opinion.3 things to keep in mind. The American importer pays the tax. Canada has retalitated with our own tarrifs. Canada is your number 1 customer. That's right -the US sells more goods to us then any other country.
I thnk the tariffs are great at resetting expectations for future negotiations. Canada needs America far more than America needs canada (both sides know that)...Trump just took the leverage back in the negotiations, and now has the upper hand....I expect them to be short lived.

We had a 63 Billion Dollar Trade Deficit with Canada in 2024. Do those numbers seem quite right? I’m no Professor of Economics.

As an Albertan I'm quite familiar with the oil we sell you. Approx 4 million barrels per day. Mostly heavy crude. Many Your refineries are built to specifically refine thus type of oil. Guess what. Your refineries now have to pay a 10% tarriff to your government. Get it? that's 25% of your oil use. You consume approx 22 million barrels per day. You produce 14 million per day. Understand? Ya. Your gas price is goin up.
Texas, Sir, have you heard of it? Please, don’t force us to open the Permian Basin again. It’s speculated there’s more oil there, than in Saudi Arabia. Now, is Texas closer to the refineries in Texas, or is Canada closer? I better get out the map!

I believe most US oil is light oil and better for gasoline production, whereas Canada's is mostly heavy oil, used in more industrial applications.
China's looming population decline will greatly hamper its importance as an economic market. If their state funded real estate goes bust, major trouble would be an understatement.
All true . Yes. But we have more reserves. Is corb lund a country singer? Good Country died 40 years ago. I own a small concrete company. I have 4 f350s. None lifted though. I do have a 4" lift on my 78 f250 however.

On the heavy oil deal. We constantly talk about it here. It's not an easy task to change over your refineries to use light oil instead. A large % of yours are fitted for heavy crude. Its years of work and 100s of billions. Your oil fields are productive but when oil drops to 50$ or less per barrel you guys shut down huge #s of rigs. 60 or higher your fine but still well short of what you need to be self sufficient. Its a tricky thing.Fuck Canada uses 2 million barrels per day. Alberta produces 5 million ish alone. But we still import! Way to complicated for my grade 9 education.

Well I assume it will be a few years before you guys can weine yourself off of our energy.If ever honestly. But we may finally get some pipelines built to the east coast so we can sell it to Europe. I hate hockey with a passion ! Syrup? 10$ 20$ who cares. A fan of maple syrup will buy it regardless. If anything good comes from this it will be pipelines so we don't have to sell so much to the US.Our premier here in Alberta has been cozying up to Your king on occasion so who knows. You only have a trade deficit with Canada because American business buys way, way more raw materials from here than an economy that's only 7% the size of yours could possibly buy back. And then takes those materials, makes something useful out of them, and sell them on for profit, often back to us (and most of the resource companies operating up here are, in fact, US companies). Far and away most things for sale here originate in the USA. We shop at Wal Mart and Hone Depot. Eat at McD's and Burger King. Even the offshore crap comes through Los Angeles and Seattle. We buy more American goods than anyone.
I'm not actually pissed at the Americans. I'm pissed at our disaster of a federal government for getting us into this fucking mess in the first place.
