What is considered Old School?

Is there a current number of years that qualify as old school? I consider old school to be anything from Hannah on back. as far as racing goes and I know he didn't quit till 87.... Is the resurection of a bike that came with disk brakes and upside down forks really old school? In cars, its mid 70's on back....Seems like old school around here is early 90's......If you are bringing back a maico, penton,carrabella, old husky, ossa, or anything like that I would consider that to be old school.......Just a rant.. take no offense....

Anything before that freestyle stuff. Don't get me wrong, those guys have alot of talent but...... most of them probably couldn't compete with actual racers on a track. Before someone corrects me about Travis Pastrana, I did say most.

That's how it works with antique cars.



To me, old school means drum brakes, although it's really a moving target as time marches on.

Air cooled engines, drum brakes, open face helmets (an Electro for me!), Scott boots (the 1st ones!), boot gaitors....if you have a picture riding or wearing of any of that stuff, that's old school to me.

Your haircut and jean jacket make up for the lack of real leathers.

I think it's pretty relative. I'm in my late 30's and consider anything '85 and older to be old school, where some of the 18 year olds on this site would consider McGrath and Emig old school.

The sport really started to change when it entered the 80s.
Bikes, gear- you name it, it all started changing fast after 1980.
But like previously mentioned, I suppose it really depends on your "era" Grin

I think I was at that race on a 125 in the int class, NMA Ponca qualifier 1983 Vegas.
Brooks #2, Mouse #52 Probably Bob Moore #3and Eddie Hicks #7 on the Yamahas, # 151 Bruner? Healy #99 on the Honda behind #151. It was one of the last races for Larry on the R&D 80.
Were you an 80 expert then?

No not Bruner! That's me on the 151. I actually one that moto. Knocked Brooks off of one of the big berms in the back. He got me back in the second moto after the finish line jump. That was my home track and I was a nobody so that race was cool for me.

Cool for taking the moto win. Was the the stk,mod or 105 class....so many classes back then. What was the name of the track? I thought it was north of the Vegas strip. The person down could be Kalos or Scott Brown? Canoy on the far left #15.

The track was called Apex. 105 class. Yeah that's Brown, we came together after that long straight. 151 is right (sp right also).

Old school is anybody that has ON ANY SUNDAY 1&2 in their collection of films, videos or DVD's and can remember the first time they watched the movie with some of their close buddies . & continue to watch the classics on a regular basis. Very soon we will be called really old school. LOL

Sounds like something Larry would do back then, he was real aggressive. We hung out between the races at Circus Circus at night and got in to trouble there with a dart. I think Paul had moved up to 125's by then. He might have been in the int class with me or an expert.
When did you move up to 125's?

You haven't lived until you've been kicked out of Circus Circus. I moved up after Ponca in 84. I'll bet we rode with each other. What class did you ride in 84/85 and the first part of 86?

84 125 expert... a little too soon, my friend talked me into it, 85 on KX125 mostly NMA western region, CMC and a couple of supercross races , moved to 250's 86, quit after the Golden State. Raced at the Vegas NMA world mini or something when Lechien showed up on the works Honda in 85, he passed me like I was standing still on the back straight section. I hung out with Kurt Henrickson, Wardy and Canoy as well as their mechanics.

How about driving 2 1/2 hours to get to a theatre that was showing it when it first came out? Setting through it 2 times then getting kicked out by management when you tried to do a 3rd time.Smile
