This thing is so badass. I had heard about it awhile ago but didn't know much about it. My dad has been telling me about this Physics chick and her YouTube channel and that she had one. Really cool video with some background on what it took to develop this car, how hydrogen works and where to fill a hydrogen car. Why the hell are we not looking into these instead of destroying an entire ecosystem to mine lithium for battery powered EV's? Apparently this is an electric motor too but powered by the hydrogen.

Manufacturing hydrogen is rather involved and not exactly cheap not to mention hydrogen is one of the most explosive substances on the planet. A mixture between 5 and 75% in air is explosive. A simple leak could be catastrophic.

Did you not watch the video? The fuel cell Toyota developed is super safe with 3 layers. It took a military grade bullet to Pierce through it. Yes it would take quite a few years to get enough stations set up to make it practical but so would the infrastructure for EV's.

Couple things;

The tank itself may be strong but all the seals associated with keeping H2 (the smallest dipole element in the universe) from leaking at 5k-10k psi from the fill nozzle to the fuel cell regulator are also a concern.

They are claiming 400 miles range to a fill-up which is very impressive.

Creating hydrogen through electrolysis is an elaborate game of energy exchange. It can be done in a plant environment at up to 80% efficiency or at point of service at a lower efficiency. If not done at point of service it would require transportation in larger, more expensive, more dangerous tankers. But regardless of how it's made it still requires more electrical energy than you are transferring to the vehicle. A battery EV has relatively high efficiency from point of production to point of use. Hydrogen generation would a higher burden on the electrical grid than battery EVs which everyone is concerned about. All this makes hydrogen expensive relative to battery EV fueling costs.

And don't forget one of the big advantages of a battery EV is that you can fuel up at home.

Then there's the issue that advancing battery technologies has greater trickle down factor, it's easy to integrate a better battery into an electric bike or motorcycle, not so much witch a complicated hydrogen fuel cell setup.

One of our local PUDs is piloting a hydrogen production facility here. The thinking is that hydrogen can be made from the excess water that needs to be spilled during the spring and then stored for year round use, thereby getting full use of energy production from the dams.

It could take a VERY long time for hydrogen fuel cell tech to catch on with the public, but doing something like this makes a lot of sense from the aspect of 'fuel storage'.

In California this thing has a ridiculous rebate which makes this a very affordable car if you can get financed for it. But I have little use for a sedan.

My dad experimented with building a diy hydrogen generator years ago ,it was basically a stack of plates and water and electricity ,I remember his first try had way too many plates and the amount of activity in the tank was off the charts lol. He ended up taking most of the plates out ,his end goal was to let the carb on his motor home suck the discharge from the tank and hopefully improve fuel milage . I'm can't remember if he ever ended up using it.

Yeah $15,000 in free fuel when you buy one here. I want one!

I helped a friend make several different prototypes like this. At first we would fill up baloons with it and light them off with a torch. That was fun! Then he ran a generator off it, then we made another improved style and put it on his suburban. It is fascinating and fairly simple. I dont know why hydrogen power hasnt taken off in vehicles yet. Theory was that big oil was keeping it surpressed.

Yes!! Toyota and Yamaha have had relationships building things together , going all the way back to the 60's. I just saw the video posted above a few nights ago. I'm in the boat of thinking that Hydrogen is the wave of the future........NOT electric! Zero emissions , no waste , tons of power. The only thing it lacks is representation and availability.

If you are truly a " Green " nut........this is the way to go. I'm actually fascinated by the technology.
