This guy's version, anyway.

4 of his first 11 are Seattle area musicians and 5 of his first 16 if you count Eddie Vedder who really started his career up here....

I don't think it matches what I'd list, though. Cobain was a great musician but I wouldn't put him in a top 20 singer list. Not including Steve Winwood somewhere in there seems a bit wrong. I think I'd end up with about 50 singers on my top 20 list....

Agree with you. There's a ton more that could have been in the top 20! Smile Janis Joplin was one of the first exclusions that jumped out at me.

I'm not going to sit through 16 minutes of some random dude's opinions, but if Roger Daltrey and Paul Rogers isn't on his list, he sucks.

Roger Daltrey made it, Paul Rodgers didn't. I used to think that Rodgers would be on any list, but I can see how he might have slid over the last 25-30 years because of adding guys like Chris Cornell and Layne Staley. He's definitely worthy of anyone's top 20 list, though.

This guy is pretty cool, his video series is pretty fun to watch. Don't always agree with him but he's pretty interesting.

I guess it all depends on what rubric you use. If you judge by bonafide vocal chops, IMHO that list would be much different.

You'd end up with guys like Klaus Meine, Ronnie James Dio, Mickey Thomas, Allan Clarke, Steve Perry and other singers who truly have extraordinary vocal ability.

Beato is a sharp cat but, he bombed that list.
Beato is definitely a sharp dude and a helluva musician in his own right. He can pretty much play any instrument at a high level. I watch a lot of his "top 20" lists and he can play the toughest riffs, bass lines or whatever his list contains, note for note and as smooth and vibrant as the original for the most part. Really impresses me (although that's not that hard, lol).

Lists like these are so subjective and the "best" is impossible to quantify ,so most of the time he'll state that his list isn't in any particular order and that it just contains what he feels is the top 20. He also includes 5 or 6 "honorable mention" .

All that being said, I think Amy Lee (Evanescence), Pat Benatar should be in there somewhere on the female side and Steve Perry deserves to be in the "official" top 20.

I could see both sides of the argument with Vedder, but listening to him sing Black is pretty phenomenal, especially live.

When it comes to that era/genre, I would probably have to put Scott Weiland ahead of Cobain and probably Vedder. Might even be close to Staley, but Layne’s harmonies with Cantrell are very hard to beat.

I do agree with him on Cornell. Perhaps the best ever, at least to me.

Depending on how far you push ‘rock’, I’d probably think Van Morrison, Elton John, and Marvin Gaye would be legitimate candidates as well.

Don't much care for the guy, but Axel Rose could screech with the best of them.

Vedder is a great singer in my opinion , but to be brutally honest does not deserve a spot in the top 20 . If there is anyone in his area of music that deserves to be in the top 20 . I'd have to go with layne Staley, or chris cornell , and some honorable mentions from that time frame are richard Patrick from filter , and Perry ferrel from Jane's addiction.

All mentioned have very iconic , memorable and broad singing ranges . And have all created music that will stand the test of time .

Also I'll add that jerry Cantrell wrote most of all the lyrics for AIC .

Yeah while both of those singers were and are talented . They do not even come close to the talent of Freddie. Very funny how he came to that conclusion . It's completely a tastly biased compilation of opinion .

I seriously can't even give an answer to my top all time singers. It really all depends ( with me ) of what type of music I'm listening to. If you had Steve Perry try to sing " Back in black " by AC/DC , it just wouldn't sound right. This is truly a topic which boils down to personal preference. It would take me a month to list all my favorite band / front man singer's , and why I chose them.

One thing is for certain dudes.....we are blessed with some damn great music in all genre's !!

Seems like a lot of the best singers over the years have been heroin addicts. I've wondered if people that are gifted singers are drawn to heroin or if the stress of being a great vocalist pushes them to addiction. I know STP sounded not as good when he was sober.

I think it boils down to the money being the root of all evil , these talented singers get sucked into massive contracts for recording . Are forced sometimes to release music they arent happy with just to make numbers . The constant grind of being on tour and playing the same album over and over again for years can take a toll on these guys . And overall kurt Cobain and a couple other guys spoke alot about how once your in the music industry you hate what you become . I think he said once that he never looked down his nose at anyone . Because he was just a slave to the society as we knownit as the next man .

Any top 20 without Steve Marriott is a crime. He played a pretty mean guitar too

Brent Smith of Shinedown has to be up there as far as vocals goes. His remake of simple man is absolutely perfect. 45 is an amazing song too.

Jay Buchanan from Rival Sons and James Patrelli from White Denim are my current favourites, both these bands deserve to be huge.

I agree with you on this, she has always had an incredible voice. Their performance on this night with Jason, the backing choir, was one of the best of their career. If you were ever gonna impress Plant, Page, and Jones, this to me would be the benchmark.
