Do you expect non-advanced aliens to invade?

Went and saw it earlier. I will say it was pretty good. Like a newer Independence Day. I've been wanting to see it since I saw the trailer during Super Bowl.

Just saw it today and was pleasantly surprised. I had my expectations in the gutter and it was definitely impressive.

Plot was way less lame than I expected and special effects were not as good as I expected (although they were still good). There were a few of the typical movie flaws such as "marines" with long hair (not ONE had a marine haircut), weapons that seemingly never run out of ammo, too many guys in a frog (CH-46), and not one single CH-53 in the entire film.

Besides that, the acting was acceptable, the plot was good (not focused too much on lame unnecessary side stories about love and romance and b.s. like that), and there wasn't an over-abundance of silly action (that sort of stuff makes me sleepy). It felt like it went by quick but it was a long movie so that is a good sign. I recommend it.

I think the overall plot / story is better than most movies about alien invaders.

I needed to get out of the house for a while and went and saw a double header movie last night.

Battle for LA : I thought it was pretty god ( way better then that skyline movie ) but the camera moves around....a LOT! You never really get a clear "still shot " of one of the aliens ( Grunts on the ground ) , but it shows the space crafts quite a bit. Overall.....it was worth seeing.

Rango : I'm a huge sucker for any and all the Pixar , Nickelodeon and dreamworks type films.....I just dig em'. And Rango was just simply awesome! Awesome story line and the computer animation in that film is unreal! Funny as hell , and even though it was rated PG , it had some jokes embedded in it that only an adult I think would get ( or at least anyone over 16 ). All in all.....I'd watch it again....great film.

C'mon D - eat up a little more. You're too skinny. Cool

Well, I sure love the Battle LA trailers -

https://youtu.be/0dI94ZO2SbM

Striking use of juxtaposing the Johannsson "The Sun's Gone Dim" track against the furious on-screen action. Not a new trick but still very effective here.

https://youtu.be/CWPkJD0YHeM

Love those ominous dim 5th chords at the beginning that just ruin a perfect So Cal morning at the beach.

I've heard some comments that the movie "borrows" heavily from the Halo game. Anyone familiar with Halo. The movie still looks like too much gorgeous eye-candy to pass up. I'm a sucker for sci-fi. Can't comment on the acting and story much just from the trailers but the casting looks good.

I watched it saturday night and thought it was awesome. I was high for the first hour and when I came down it was still awesome (maybe even better). I thought the acting and plot were very good, it was very well made. There weren't really any over the top explosions or anything, which surprised me. There were a few scenes that had me shedding man tears, on the verge of actually crying.

Great flick, I can get into my local Grand Theater for like $8 with my college ID, might have to go see it again!

I could swear I saw this movie on Sat TV last night. The name seemed the same but after watching that trailer there is no way I saw that movie. The one on TV was just cheesy.

I thought it was kinda cheesy, and seemed like a giant commercial for the marines to me, half expected a recruiter to be waiting in the theater lobby. I thought it seemed like they halfway threw the rest of the story in at the last second because of predictable characters. The older marine close to retirement haunted by a mission gone bad, the virgin/fresh outta high school naive marine, the marine who's engaged to be married, and the rebellious marine who has a problem with the older one because his brother was killed in the mission gone bad. Maybe I was just expecting too much. Not award winning, but entertaining none the less. Could have been worse I guess.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but as i was watching the preview a thought came to my mind of how the world would react if LA was attacked by aliens.

I would assume every nation with an Air Force or Navy would come to help. I would hope humans would put their differences aside to save the world.

In the movie the attacks occur all around the world. The film only focuses on LA.

I am going to assume when we are invaded, their plan will be pretty solid and we won't be able to beat them with air forces, computer viruses, cold viruses, or water.

Topic: ID4 virus, Alien/OS Vulnerability

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CERT Coordination Center has received reports of weaknesses in Alien/OS that can allow species with primitive information sciences technology to initiate denial-of-service attacks against MotherShip(tm) hosts. One report of exploitation of this bug has been received.

When attempting takeover of planets inhabited by such races, a trojan horse attack is possible that permits local access to the MotherShip host, enabling the implantation of executable code with full root access to mission-critical security features of the operating system.

The vulnerability exists in versions of EvilAliens' Alien/OS 34762.12.1 or later, and all versions of Microsoft's Windows/95. CERT advises against initiating further planet takeover actions until patches are available from these vendors. If planet takeover is absolutely necessary, CERT advises that affected sites apply the workarounds as specified below.

As we receive additional information relating to this advisory, we will place it in

ftp://info.cert.org/pub/cert_advisories/CA-96.13.README
We encourage you to check our README files regularly for updates on advisories that relate to your site.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Description
Alien/OS contains a security vulnerability, which strangely enough can be exploited by a primitive race running Windows/95. Although Alien/OS has been extensively field tested over millions of years by EvilAliens, Inc., the bug was only recently discovered during a routine invasion of a backwater planet. EvilAliens notes that the operating system had never before been tested against a race with "such a kick-ass president."

The vulnerability allows the insertion of executable code with root access to key security features of the operating system. In particular, such code can disable the NiftyGreenShield (tm) subsystem, allowing child processes to be terminated by unauthorized users.

Additionally, Alien/OS networking protocols can provide a low-bandwidth covert timing channel to a determined attacker.

Impact
Non-privileged primitive users can cause the total destruction of your entire invasion fleet and gain unauthorized access to files.

Solution
EvilAliens has supplied a workaround and a patch, as follows:

Workaround
To prevent unauthorized insertion of executables, install a firewall to selectively vaporize incoming packets that do not contain valid aliens. Also, disable the "Java" option in Netscape.

To eliminate the covert timing channel, remove untrusted hosts from routing tables. As tempting as it is, do not use target species' own satellites against them.

Patch
As root, install the "evil" package from the distribution tape.

(Optionally) save a copy of the existing /usr/bin/sendmail and modify its permission to prevent misuse.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- The CERT Coordination Center thanks Jeff Goldblum and Fjkxdtssss for providing information for this advisory. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you believe that your system has been compromised, contact the CERT Coordination Center or your representative in the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST).

We strongly urge you to encrypt any sensitive information you send by email. The CERT Coordination Center can support a shared DES key and PGP. Contact the CERT staff for more information. [/b]
