I was going through some boxes in the garage and came across a whole pile of posters published in the later 80's. I'm not sure if they came in one book or there was a series as i don't have the covers. Looks like they were put out by Ashley Publishing.

I nearly threw out the box without even going through it, but glad i did. Looks like they were taken between 87 - 88. They are double sided and are pretty much in the same condition they were in when they were printed.

I had so much fun remembering the riders, bikes and gear that i thought i'd share with you all. (i wasn't sure if this should have gone in the old school forum, so if it needs to be moved GuyB, that's ok with me). I hope some of you enjoy the photos. (i've tried to get all of the riders names correct, not sure about the Shaun Kalos one though).

Cheers

The #36 looks like Smail but I'm not sure...is there a chance that pic is from '93?

That pic is odd. It's air cooled and rear drum brakes. I thought Yamaha made that WR500 thing in '93. I've been driving for 19 straight hours though, so it could be meth talking. Lol.

This photo is not of the MXON. It's of the USGP. Notice the lack of skunk stripes on the helmet.

From the MX History on Pulp MX:

1986 - #93 Brian Manley, #36 Steven Burdette (Billy Frank was #37)
1987 - #93 Greg Torgerson, #36 Bader Manneh

However, for some reason, I thought the #93 picture looked like Mickey Dymond based on the MS gear, but I'm sure that's wrong.

What year did Honda go to the rear disk? I know they had it in 87.

I don't believe the Yamaha rider is either of those. I remember Burdette possibly being a Fox guy and I don't remember Manneh ever riding Yamaha's. But my memory is not that great anymore.

Also, there are yellow plates on the Yamaha #36. So that would lead me to believe it's a 490, so could it be Tom Carson in 1985?

Billy Frank was a 125 guy and Burdette was a 250 guy in 86. Neither scored any 500 points.

Just looking at pictures, the drum was last used on the Honda in 85. Eric McKenna was #93 in 1985.

Thats Billy Frank from 1988 I believe.

I remember this poster series well. You bought it at the newsstand and it looked like a magazine but when you opened it, it was a series of folded up posters. I think I still have a few of my favorites that I saved in a box somewhere.

#93 is not Eric McKenna, did ride a Honda and M-Start (Maico) that year, Hi-Point Gear though.

Bader Manneh did ride Yamaha, 1st pro season ? not sure.

You are correct on both. The pics are Brian Manley in 1986 and Billy Frank in 1988.

My mistake. I was looking at the national numbers and failed to think they were based on the previous year results. He rode 125 in 85 to set his 86 number.

Still cool posters. HA!

I have 3 issues of those Ashley poster series. Back in 1987-88 my bedroom was covered wall to wall with those posters. After the first issue I realized that I had to get two copies so that I could put up each side of the two sided posters.

I wonder how many issues of the MX series were ever published? The original poster has at least one that I do not. From what I recall Ashley also had those poster issues with hot rods and other types of 4 wheel racing featured.

The MX ones I have came from the corner 7-11 in my neighborhood back when I would ride my bicycle there every day after school at the beginning of every month looking to spend my lawn mowing money on the latest issues on any motorcyle magazine I could find.

Undated "first issue"

October 1988

December 1988

One thing that was always a mytery to me were two of the riders from the October 1988 issue. To this day I still have no idea who Mike Kurzeja or Scott Wilkinson were. Does any one know their stories?

Mike Kurzeja on a 1987 YZ125. Possibly from the midwest (Illinois?) due to the DGY seat cover on the bike.

Scott Wilkinson on the 1987 CR250? The Hi Point gear and Devol disc guard hint at an American rider but the radiator shrouds look to be euro style aftermarket and have the HRC/British flag logo.

"Ashley Publishing" produced a total run of four of those "magazines". They were sold on Newstands. I have several copies of each as well.

They are pretty cool, though zero editorial content!

I think they also published a similar deal with skate and bmx posters as well. It was a strange deal, they were not a moto or moto related company.

Does anyone know who shot any of those pictures?

The photo credits from the 3 issues I have are mixed between Kinney Jones, Tom Riles, and David Dewhurst with Dewhurst credited with the copy for the short descriptions of the riders and locations from the inside covers.

I know this is old but I know Mike Kurzeja on the YZ125 # 346 he is my cousin he lived in Darien IL a suburb of Chicago my Dad got him his 1st dirt bike a RM 80 and trained him and was his mechanic. I was racing my Yzinger 50. He was sponsored buy DGY (Downers Grove Yamaha) MSR and Scott and I think WD40. I remember he won LL and turned pro in 86 I think Then he had a bad crash.

Stopped ridding and became a Cop and is trying to be a boxer. Goggle his name you can see videos on you tube about him.

I haven't talk to him in a while his 3 sons were riding I think one might be still I know he did the ktm 50 race at Indianapolis a few years ago. Pretty cool to see that picture I use to have that poster on my wall!
