Red Flag Question

During the LCQ red flag, a rider that was down and was part of the reason the red flag was thrown was allowed to line back up and restart, despite him not even trying to get on the bike until after the red flag had flown.

I know he wasn’t the sole reason for the red flag, but there is a chance they’d have red flagged it if only he was the one down, given he was laying there and not moving.

I was always under the impression that if you were part of the reason the red flag was thrown, you couldn’t restart. I guess I was under this impression because it just never happens. If you can’t get on your bike after a minute you probably can’t get on it safely after five minutes. Obviously I was wrong about this, given the rider was allowed to restart.

This recently learned rule made me realize there’s nothing stopping a perfectly fine rider from laying there motionless after a first turn crash, waiting for the red flag, then hopping up and getting a restart attempt. After Doc checks him out of course and clears him, which is obviously another thing the rider involved in had to do.

It just seems silly to me that if you’re even part of the reason the red flag was thrown and hadn’t gotten back on your bike in over a minute that they’d let you line back up for a restart. That opens the door up for some shenanigans in my opinion, especially near the end of a championship fight. Was this a special circumstance since he wasn’t the only person the race was red flagged for? Or is this the norm and just had never occurred till now?

The flag was for sure thrown for Lane Shaw who was laying there completely unconscious in the middle of the track. I know there was a few other riders involved in the crash but that does not mean they should be penalized. I get where you are coming from and the rider you are referring too is Josh Cartwright. He may of been on his feet the second after he went down but unless you were standing down there none of us know. Typically if you see a rider go down (regardless of the sevarity) in the first few sections of an LCQ they aren’t going to be rushing to their feet quickly because they know their night is over.

But you’re right, typically we never see red flag starts with multiple riders involved. I’m sure someone will post the rule book article for us?

I think the other rider unconscious was the reason for the red flag.

There have been instances in the past where a rider faked an injury in the first turn in hopes of a red flag. Can’t remember the details off the top of my head, but remember it happening.

For sure they probably don’t throw the red if not for Shaw. I say probably because they still might. Yes. Cartwright. Was blanking on the name. But he was still down and getting tended to till a good minute after they threw the red flag. Not as serious as Shaw obviously, but the point holds true. I was shocked to see him line back up for reasons I already stated in my original post.

After seeing this, I’m REALLY surprised that Cartwright was able to race !
Just came looking for the same thing. When I was racing you could not restart if you were involved with the red flag.

It's not about even being able, he was part of the cause of the red flag so he should have been sent packing for the night.

The way Josh was laying looked like he probably just got the breath knocked out of him. I feel like if he was on the track he would have got up to get off but he probably knew he was already off so no need to rush. If that's the case it seems like no big deal to line back up. I've ridden many times after having the breath knocked out of me.

This shows there is no regard for rider safety, he was out cold, really kinda got me pissed, got a concussion if he hit hard enough to get knocked out, all of the information there is about concussions and brain injuries. If the doc didn't wanna park him he should find a new job because hes doing a disservice to the riders

I was thinking the same thing when I saw him lining back up. About that being part of the rule but I didn’t know for sure. I was fine when he lined back up though cause I wasn’t sure of the cause of the incident. I figured it was just general group carnage and got caught up in it. Had he been the sole creator of the red flag then I’d have thought differently, but life’s too short to get worked up over stuff that doesn’t really affect me so, Game On!

#81 entered the restart and crashed thereafter again.True diehard.
#805 Gardner (450)
was motionless in front of me for a few laps ,entering the sand.Idiots should of red flagged that race as well. But they didnt.
Another note worthy move was when Bagget won his heat race and coasted toward the spectator wall. I was right in front of this. The tv mule was hauling ass.Blake is one lucky sob i tell ya. That was too close.Too close. That tv mule was on a mission and threw caution to the wind all night. They, somebody should of told all the riders beforehand .
The short start that lead to that left turn sand trap was a disaster all evening. Many preventable crashes ,bad placement for it for sure.

If you are the reason for the red flag your night should be over.

I remember a few years back Zach Bell was knocked unconscious, or so it seemed since he wasn’t moving. They red flagged the race. He then was allowed to line up for the LCQ. Such a joke.
