Did you guys watch the Vike/Saints game? Early on, they showed a noise meter when the crowd was pretty loud and it reached 102 db. Some of the 4-strokes on the race track hit that limit all by themselves! I found that VERY surprising. I thought the stadium would be a higher number.

I never watch stick and ball sports but I was eating sushi in Hermosa Beach yesterday and they had the game on. I saw that shot you reference and it was a good plug for Radio Shack sound meters.

If anyone is interested in sound related issues you're invited to join the forum at www.soundoffmc.com

I am surprised anyone can sit in the stands without ear plugs.....I get mine at CVS

If all bikes are quieter, then they are all down on power equally. So what's the problem with lowering the noise???/ Still waiting for anyone in the industry to tell me the answer.... Waiting... waiting...

Another point, is that testing at a wide open throttle, would also even things out. At this point, it is really about who can manipulate the computer system the best, because you clearly hear the differences of bikes out on the track.

Great post. We were talking about that same thing during the game when they showed that. Have they ever done that during an SX race indoors?

I saw that as well and couldn't help but wonder what a typical supercross main would reach on the floor.

What is the excuse for not making them quieter? Less power, not many can use all of the power anyway. And engine builders will make them faster. In Formula 1, no matter what rules they make each year to slow down the cars (tires, aero, engine size, rev limiters), the teams always break the track records when they hit the track. Smart people will make the bikes faster no matter what the sound requirements.

Well said, and I couldn't agree more. I sat in the 200 section at A2 instead of the club level like usual, and WOW was it loud. This noise thing is out of hand...

Hmm, not getting your point on this, unless you are agreeing with me?? Maybe your post was meaning after the first sentence, "there isn't an excuse."
Basically like you said, the riders can't use all the power anyways, and the builders will still make them too fast. So thus, my first post should be valid. Why can't they just make the sound requirements lower now? It would save a lot of headaches (more way than 1). This should be a NOW thing, not 2013 or something like that. NOW.

There is no "good" excuse that I have heard. If they would drop the sound levels the sport would be better, and the industry would be stronger (i.e. sell more motorcycles).

Hey all bikes are loud. Don't fool yourself. Stand next to a YZ250 or a YZF450 they are both loud at racing levels. What everyone is missing here, I don't know if it's due to stupidity or blindness. The difference between the Football game and a Supercross Race is: The loud crowd is next to you. The sound levels would be more detrimental to your hearing then at a race. During the race. People are much farther away from the sound creation.

Seriously if its that much of a problem go out an buy some ear plugs for your sensitive ears.

On the sound levels, they could be less I agree with that. I can still hear the two strokes as well as the four strokes as they ride on the local trails by my house. The tree huggers would find something else to bitch about if hey were silent.

Don't like how loud they are? It's a free country go out and do something about it. People will still complain. Irony - look at the business of making things louder over making things quieter. More money is spent on making things louder.

How does lower Db's equate to more bikes sold?

If tracks are able to run closer to the city, more people will ride. If we had really quiet rules, same as a normal car for example. We would have tracks all over the place. The loud noise is closing tracks down, thus, even less riders.

I like your spirit! I do think quiter would be better but I am so tired of bending over to the politally correct and the enviormental wacko's that it is nice to give them the finger and say suck on my loud pipe you Fn wacko.

All those who are dumb enough to think the noise problem has anything to do with environmentalists are nuts. How many of the local motocross tracks were shut down from "environmentalists" last year? Now, how many from local home owners sick of the loud azz noise every day until dark???/

Great post.
It would be a great post if it were true. Sorry, but it is not over a 100db coming only from where you are sitting. It is the whole stadium. If compared at your seat, I would put my $1 that the noise level is higher at sx events than at a football game. I can talk to friends at a football game, I can barely hear anyone at a sx. So sorry, just not true. Fail

I disagree that making things louder is done more in business. Tell me how many quiet mufflers are sold compared to loud one's when comparing cars. Let's look at vacuums, refridg, dish washers etc. Much more money is spent and made on quiet than loud. Fail again.

I ain't buying that one. Normal car? Have you heard the loud diesels, rice burners, harleys, etc..

What's common between all that you listed? The average person hates them. You can ain't buy what every you want. These are facts. Go look at the old diesel F250's, like 99 and now go look at a 09. They spent a ton of money making them cleaner, and quieter. Do you think the average person likes being beside a rice burner, with bass? Sure some sell, but it's a very small percentage of the population. You are acting like everyone owns these things. very small
Now tell me how much is spent on these luxury cars to make them quiet inside, so they don't have road noise.

Yep you can buy them quieter and then put an 8" pipe on them. I promise you the general pop hears the rice burner, the harley, and the diesel a hell of lot more than they do an MX track 4 miles out of town. People will bitch about anything just to be bitching about something. Everyone in the world switched from 4 strokes to 2 strokes there would still be bitching about dirt bikes.

WTF does a luxury car being quiet inside have to do with dirt bikes? Oh wait I know. If they make them quiet inside they can't hear my dirt bike. Good on them.

Ok, so what you are saying, is that more people go put a 8" pipe on than leaving it stock? Yeah, umm no. What does it have to do with luxury cars? Seriously, you should think before posting. People want privacy and quietness. Do you think a diesel, rice burner, harley hang around a neighborhood all day every day, and into dawn? Dude, seriously stop. It's not the general population shutting down a local track. It's the population next to the track. Think.

I know for a fact that supercross races (and outdoor mx) are still louder now than when it was all 2 strokes.

Don't feed me this line of bullshit that a 4 stroke is as quiet as a 2 stroke Tiki.

It can pretty noise in dome's.

However, the noise is just part of Motosports. That's the fucking engine and exhaust and power your hearing baby. That's just how it is. Nascar, Drag Racing, Motocross-the noise is part of it. Otherwise, you might as well go to a BMX race.

It's probably true that an unsilenced(unrestricted) exhaust produces more power in most cases. I'm sure all the old timers can remember when 2 strokes were racing without silencers. If you were close enough it felt like an ice pick in yer ear...(and that was back when you could get REAL close to the track). I've been guilty of gutting my silencer so I sounded cool(fast). Maturity allows me to understand that when a track closes and the court cites NOISE as the reason, then maybe loud isn't so cool. I used to have a few places within 45 minutes of my house...now the NEAREST place is 75+ miles away...I'm just sayin.

You sure like to add words don't you? Did I say more people go put on an 8" pipe? Did I say ANYONE put on an 8" pipe? Speaking of thinking, maybe you should think and use some reading comprehension.

Do MX tracks go all day every day and into dawn? Again try thinking? I realize you are very passionate about bringing your beloved 2 strokes back but THINK. It is not just the pop. next to the tracks, what about all the wilderness areas that "they" want shut down. Anyway I know you will carry on about this until this reaches 10 pages so I will let you try to convince someone else that you are the know it all on why our areas are getting shut down and it is ALL because of the 4 strokes.Whistling

Four strokes are not quieter but two strokes are loud as well, any track/area closure is being closed on whatever the opposition can use.

Starwest, Perris, Barona, Chullia, Comp Edge. Fairly well known tracks right? They all get complaints. They are all right next to homes. In many cases the homes were built after the track. The bikes could be silent and the complaints would still come in. Dont let your personal bitch with the AMA and the displacement rule cloud the reality of this. Loud has its complaint and the tree huggers are bitching about everything. Even the precious bugs that lives are threatened.

Tracks are being closed by whatever means they can use. 15 years ago they were being closed due to the noise as well? It wasn't four strokes.

So please continue on your brilliance and expertise. You are wowing your audience with your intellectual prowess.
