Kyle Webster without a Ride

Edited Date/Time 11/1/2019 7:52pm
According to some sources, CRF honda racing has decided to not go racing this upcoming season and therefore is Kyle left without a ride.

things we know.
He was second in the mx2 championship in Australia and had an excellent outing at the MXON in Assen.

options?
MX2 World championship ( NOGO aged out )
MX1 World championship ( unproven on the bigger bike Risk VS Reward depending on price)

AMA MX2 ( unproven SX abilities )
AMA MX1 ( NOGO learning a bigger bike and SX at the same time is not a good combo )

Best fit IMO JGR Suzuki or Smartop bullfrog honda if they field an mx2 bike definitely the honda

If we’re talking realistic here, no way MCR is fielding a 250 this deep into off-season.

True, unless they would start off with outdoors only in 2020 en moving forward to 2021 an SX campaign with outdoors. or do you still think it's going to be too deep into the off-season for an outdoors only offer?

JGR has a line of guys that want the spot and my project is full already. There’s a lot of good riders over here that won’t have rides in 2020.

it sounds like he is in a spot where he needs to evaluate what he wants and where he wants to go. Its feel like a point to either hang it up or go all in so to speak.

really there arent many rides available so i wouldnt hope for that. With that said he might have to gamble on being a privateer.

does he have any exp in SX? maybe get a 250 and race the East series as it allows more prep time?

Rumour is that he has already signed a deal for 2020. Also as far as him on a 450...not proven internationally but def proven in Australia. He’s just as quick on a 450 as he is in a 250. SX in Aust is growing and Kyle is very quick and has podiumed

He will have a ride, and as Kiwi fan said, sounds like he already has something signed for next year.

I hope he learnt that he need international credentials if he wants oversea rides.

He is not a youngster so it is always a good invest to race the MEC, RBSR, A1, Daytona, Paris SX, and some other international races where the teams can get an idea of where he would rank even if that lead to a semi privateer status. It may not work that well although he delivered results (Soubeyras, Ramette, Ferris, etc) but he won't have regrets. He did well at the mxdn, not great but it was still a good performance, i hope that more experiences like that can open some eyes. 1 race top 15 in a "mudder" won't, but that is a good start. It is never too late.

3rd in MXoN qualifier and 7th overall in mx2 isn't too bad for his first overseas ride in Europe particularly at such a high pressure event as MXoN. It was certainly good enough to raise a lot of interest from overseas teams. Unfortunately he has aged out of MX2 in Europe. I agree he needs to race overseas but unless he can secure a really decent bike for those races it is a waste of time. The logistics of taking his own bike is very expensive. It seems that teams are now taking notice of the Aussie riders so maybe if he has another stand-out year in 2020 here in Aus a team may pick him up for a GP ride.

would be cheaper and easier from Australia to do the US SX or outdoor series, and actually win prize money, and contingency payouts,

Agreed, and with Penrite Hondas comment that they want to have a rider or riders in the US Nationals then I suspect that is where he will end up

This is probably not a popular opinion, but if im a top aussie rider like Ferris, Waters, Webster, Clout etc. i stay exactly where im at. Make the local money while it's there and try and get somebody to fund some overseas races for me eg. MXdN or some nationals in the mid season break.

The rumour was Ferris left alot of cash on the table in Aus to chase a year overseas, probably wishes he hadn't now. Unless you have a guaranteed money paying gig that you're walking into its just such a massive investment to go over there by yourself on your own dime. Especially for the guys in their mid to late 20's.

Realistically the aussie guys need to be that much better and stand out massively to get a look in. Think Reed/Lawrence/Metty, dudes that would've been winning in aus by 30-40 seconds. Nobody currently here has that sort of ability. Bank the aussie money while its there, dont blow it all chasing the dream of finishing top 10 overseas.

Your absolutely right in your comment about not going overseas unless its on a good team. I don't entirely agree with you when you say the guys currently in Aus aren't displaying the same ability as previous riders who have made it overseas. I my opinion, the top guys in Aus, in particular the MX2 class, are all world-class and could hold down a top 10 finish overseas, even better. The fact they aren't winning their class here by 30-40 secs to me shows just how good the top 3-5 guys are. The current crop of riders ie Wilson Todd, Webster, Jay Wilson, Crawford etc are all top riders and continually improving. I don't believe any of these riders would beat the other by 30-40 secs regularly.

Absolutely theyre great riders that could top 10 in any international MX2 series. The only problem is that doesnt get the job done these days, the money doesnt flow that far down. They need to be winning.

Reed/Metty/Lawrencex2 are and were hired on the belief they could win races, not finish top 10. There are already dozens of riders over there that can finish top 10 on god bikes. As an aussie they need to stick out,do more and be better than the average. I dont see that in this generation of riders yet.

Take Dan Reardon for a perfect example. He's as good (in supercross atleast) as any of the up and comers. He was a top 10 guy, sometimes better. But he was one and done because he didnt win. Its hard for an aussie in any international series because they just need to be that much better, they dont have the bro's or the connections, the riding has to speak louder than anything. Do you think these guys coming up have that ability just yet?

Your right. I do know that a few of those I named have been signed to race MX2 in MXGPs next year. Hopefully they will do well. I'm sure that Regan Duffy will be a contender whether he signs next year or not I don't know. Webster needs to win MX2 in 2020 in Aust at the very least and do some of the GPs maybe at the end of our season before SX starts here.

Webster's in a tough spot because he's aged out in europe i believe, and doesnt have the SX results to get a full time gig there. Unless he goes the Jay Wilson route and commits to the west coast SX and turns some heads. But again he's doing it on his own with a less than optimal bike and paying for everything with whatever he manages to win in Aus. Its kind of a dead end.

Depressing reality i know. But winning titles in Aus isn't the worst way to make a living. Look at Ferris, or Ando or even Mossy. They made comparatively good money compared to spending it all overseas.

The sign-on money in Aust needs to increase significantly for these guys if we want to keep them. In one way I would love to see more Aussies racing overseas against the best in the world and doing well but on the other hand, it depletes our own mx series. Also expecting these guys to prepare for only 5 rounds of supercross with only 5/6 weeks preparation is not ideal either and may be the reason the guys are getting hurt and/or not progressing as quickly skill-wise in supercross. Compress the MX series slightly, no mid-season break and give them more time to prepare for supercross...just a thought. The attraction to GPs I think is no supercross. To go to US you must be both.

I thought maybe DPH Husqvarna would pick up Webster as Wilson Todd is possibly elsewhere in 2020?

Sorry i checked too quickly his results, it was indeed a great performance, not just a good one. So far in the off season he may try the fill in option, or like another member said, the best is probably to focus on australia where he will get more support, or both when possible. He is not lucky about the age rule either, but maybe a mx2 fill in ride in the US may pop up. He probably needs a good agent to speed things up overseas as he may not have all the direct contacts. In all cases it is a weird time in term of racing, there are many good/great riders without a ride globally (like the list on this website, Tickle, Grant, Davalos, Bowers, Bloss, etc etc, and in europe i don't have the list but i think Bobryshev, Paturel, Nagl, etc).

Not a rumour, ferris left close to 300k (if he won championship) to go overseas. But sometimes money isnt a motivating factor. He had a dream and chased it.

The young guys who want to race overseas need to take a shot at it, 85% of aus guys will need a job after their career. May as well have a big crack when your young with no life comittments, australia will always be here and if your good enough there will be money here.

So a Championship brings $300k,
How lucky the guys running 5th + must be,
Do they even get bread crumbs?

How many of the top 10 hold a full time or part time job?

The young guys who want to race overseas need to take a shot at it, 85% of aus guys will need a job after their career. May as well have a big crack when your young with no life comittments, australia will always be here and if your good enough there will be money here.
So a Championship brings $300k, How lucky the guys running 5th + must be, Do they even get bread crumbs? How many of the top 10...

Do they even get bread crumbs?

How many of the top 10 hold a full time or part time job?
I think that figure is because Ferris won every round of the championship so that’s money for each round as well as the championship bonus. Add that to his sign-on and there you go! Nobody else in Aus would be on that sort of money

"Good performance" ? For me, he and his 450 colleague were the revelations of the week-end... They did awesome and opened a lot of eyes.
