Better than a complete restart for sure, however flagging everything down to a single line through there I think would have been a better option than a restart

I loved the restart! I feel horrible for Cunningham but great move by the A.M.A. PLUS My guy moved from 9th to a close 3rd!! Wonder how big of a hole mxmatti just put in his roof... Not only did Barcia beat Roczen, but Roczen had an pretty big advantage too.

The staggered start was bs because the should gave flagged it much sooner and it certainly hurt barcia.

He was at least 8 seconds behind the leader and fell right before the red flag. I don't think he would have podium finish with the way the pre-restart race was going.

It helped Barcia by closing the field in for him.

I love the staggered restart. It's just plain fair.

whats good about it is there has been so many riders hurt, they have a rider down in a bad spot, they aren't afraid to take control of the race and make a decision.

they don't always make the right decisions but tonight is a perfect example of what to do.....by following the rules and executing them correctly.

Lemans style. They have to run from the sideline to their bikes...

Wow...the AMA getting kudos here? I thought you guys would be in full meltdown. Smile

They followed the rulebook. It was a surprise to just about everyone here (and most of the riders), but it seemed to work out well.

It was a good call, for sure.

It's weird how nobody (RC, KW, Emig, etc) say they've never seen one before. I had to be in one at an AMA-sanctioned amateur race. There was a horrible wreck almost halfway through our moto, so we had to restart. The AMA ref on hand actually knew the rule (or thought he did) and it worked out okay. It kind of surprises me that none of those guys have seen one before tonight, honestly.

I would have to agree.

It was the right call. Odd, but correct.

Looked a bit goofy, and when I first saw it I thought Mickey Mouse was gonna come out and drop the flag, but looking back it was definately better than a restart, nothing is ideal as the riders often lose their rhythm, its a shame they couldn't have gone through the section on a caution for longer but safety rules at the end of thee day.Fair play for someone from the AMA to come and talk, that's a first for me,the way it should be,feel sorry for Roczen,he looked fast, this year has looked like a struggle compared to last year, maybe its the pressure and the injury? His feet never touched the ground last year really

From another thread:

First of all, it isn't a "staggered start"...That is when you want to run 2 classes from the same gate, and they all don't want to leave the gate together. The "single file" start, (we used to make the riders do it "dead engine"), has been around for 50 years. When we were doing it in the early '90's, it was because we got the idea from some old timers who had done it that way in the '60's, 70's and 80's. Where have some of you been?!? The single file start worked last night just as it is supposed to...perfectly. Smile

...the first time I saw the single file start was circa 1990 at AX...who ran AX at that time you ask? Well it was former Grand National Flat Track Champion, Mike Kidd. It was common in Flat Track to do that kind of restart.

Good Job AMA!

Well if you get to say that I'm going to say it ruined Ken's first main event win of the season.

The single file restart works well. I saw it used for the first time about 20 years ago at an pro flat track event.

It's not a new rule, but like many other have said, I've never seen it used in SX. My memory of it might be clouded but wasn't there a red flagged SX a few years ago that they restarted and the final result was based on aggregate time from both halves of the race??

WhKnuckle's timed gate suggestion in the other thread is the next evolution of making it more fair. Staggered start was better, but not the best it could be.

As said, I had seen it used in flattrack. The rule is something like your front wheel can't pass the rear wheel in front of you until the line.
