I'd call you a noob but I wouldnt really be helping...You dont have to but if youre gunna go out to the dusty desert then you could put some on. And any grease would work its just so the dust sticks to it rather than getting sucked into the engine. I dont use grease and i ride in all sorts of conditions and my bike is just fine.

A noob is somebody that is new to this shit.

On that note grease is good if you are riding really wet conditions, or in suzukirm12594 case something to keep his hair down, but in most cases just making sure the rim is well oiled may be sufficient.

I still use it even though today's air boxes may seal without it. Cheap insurance I say. No Toil even sells it in a tube to use, but I just use regular BelRay grease.

Use grease !

Air filter oil is designed to become tacky, to an almost dry state. It will adhere to the air box, if not greased.

A simple coat on the surface will provide the much needed seal. It's cheap insurance, and your air filter will not glue it's self to the intake box.

I use No toil...it's cleans better, easier, and your filters last longer.

Bel Ray water proof grease. There are no deserts in Tn. so you want to protect from water getting in.
Sounds like your friend knows a little bit about moto so keep listening to him.

Tom Morgan told me grease was unnecessary so I quit using it over ten years ago with no issues to date. I don't miss the mess.

I use the Pro Seal air filter gasket.... same effect without the grease.

"The neoprene gasket adheres to the air filters rim inside your dirtbikes air box. The neoprene creates a larger sealing surface and is memory enhanced for a perfect seal fit again and again. The adhesives are not affected by gas and oils, so the Pro-Seal will not separate from the air filter rim once installed."

I have been greasin' my bikes for the last 30 years because my "uncle buzz" told me too. Never had a motor go bad, and I help the local economy by buying grease, solvents etc.

Slop it on.

PS. We ride in sand country all the time and if we don't put it on there and really soak our filters that shit gets through and goes into the motor.

I do mine the simple way: When I get home from riding, I clean my air filter (no toil)

1.wash off dirt with water

2.spray simple green

3. Rinse the simplegreen off

4.squeeze the access water

5. blow filter with air compressor

6. spray filter with mineral oil

I skip the Pro Seal and use the Moose filters. Neoprene is built into the filters. Excellent quality filters.

I rebuild my own engines and never seen a single adverse affect of not using grease.

if you oil the lip well, you don't need it, but it all depends on your riding conditions and if you keep your filter clean. If your filter is dirty and you're riding in dusty/sandy/muddy conditions, it will pull air from wherever easiest, and if the lip isn't sealed, that means all that crap is coming straight into your crankcase (on a smoker) or will eat your intake valves alive. It may not guarantee that by not greasing you'll fuck your bike up, but it's cheap ass insurance like they all said. Just do it, it's a few bucks for a tub of grease that will last a long ass time.
