I was told (or read somewhere) that #4 was retired for 5 years which makes no sense to me. Either retire it forever or not at all. Although when there's only 9 single digit permanent #'s it makes it pretty hard to retire one.

Personally I say lets go back to the old number system.

The right rider at the right time will take it regardless of the rule. It takes time. It did with 2, and the right guy picked that up. Six is available, right, and Langston's 8 will come around I'd expect' I don't see Grant doing a Brownie with his number (no disrespect to Brown, more power to him is he can get the points to keep it).

when rc hung it up the ama said 2 yr hold on the 4....its been 2 yrs,,,but trey is the only one eligible for a single digit this year...i dont think he has a pair big enuff to take it, plus he does want to run 41, cuz his dad ran it....he should take 6

I hope that no number ever gets "retired". The #2 has name recognition of both Villopoto and McGrath. The #4 will always have an attachment ot RC's career and it should be given out to someone else who wins a championship. It's just something that should be turned over to the next generation.

I think that the new system is nice...but I think reassigning numbers every once in a while is nice too. Like every 5 years or so....an example Mike Brown...sure he's still doing well, but he does not deserve 3 AT ALL. Back in 2000-2001 ya, now no!With RC, let's be honest RC aint coming back; give his number away, same with Langston in a year or two..Mikey would like 8 im sure...who knows who would like 3,4, or 6 but someone should be running the numbers. Either re-assign new numbers every 5 years(thats enough time for ppl to get use to a number and if the rider is still racing AND doing well enough to keep a single digit past that they can keep the number) or go back to the old system... Racing once a year to keep your number is selfish imo

Nascar themselves have never retired a number. Richard Petty's 43 is still being raced and Richard Childress owns the #3 and its up to him if it ever gets used as long as he continues to pay for that number (Yes Nascar sells the numbers to each Team)

My bad, I just figured they did that. But I still think the notion is stupid.

As much as I love the GOAT, no number really should be retired. The old numbering system was soooo much better than what they have in place now.

I was just thinking about some of the numbers and Ithink that

#3 would look good on Short
# 6 for Metcalfe
# 8 Alessi
#11 Rattray
#15 Wilson
* Keep the #4 retired a bit more unless (Short, Reed, Alessi, or Metcalfe wants it)

What don't you understand that as the way it is now numbers 2-9 are for National Champions. Keep thinking about it.

I understand it fine...but Canard is passing it up, Pourcel is passing it up, and Weimer didnt get enough points to get a single digit?? Or am I wrong there? Those are the three that should be getting single digits but 2/3 are passing them up...give em to the next guys

its not about points...to get a single digit #, you must win either a 250 or 450 outdoor national championship or the 450 supercross title...if you get enuff points, you can get assigned a permanent #, not a single digit..pourcell has no championship that qualifies him for single digit

Weimer and Pourcel are not eligible for single digits. Regional SX championships do not earn a single digit, only 450 SX and 250/450MX championships do. 250 SX is considered a regional title and not a full fledged national championship. Canard can pick a single digit but may opt for 41 or anything else he likes.

Why don't E/W 250F champs get the chance at a single digit IF THEY ARE AVAILABLE? Which they are right now...

answered above...

#4 is leased to Carmichael for marketing use through 2012 I believe. Not sure without digging if its available to use in 2012 or if it becomes available in 2013, but its still his for at least another year.
