125 or 250f

Looking to get a new bike. Right now I have a 2020 yz 250f. I am debating if I should get another 250f or if I want to go to a 125 or a 150. I used to be really into racing but now I'm racing a lot more casually and I've always heard 125s are the most fun bikes to ride and that is why I am tempted to get one. My only concern is that I will get bored of a 125 and crave more that's why a 150 sounds appealing but give me your thoughts. Btw I am about 6ft 185lbs.

I recently sold my 2018 CRF250r and picked up a 2022 KTM125sx. I am mostly doing open practice rides with my friends and not really into chasing plastic glory anymore. The 125 is super fun and light weight. It never feels like it's going to get away from you. It is FUN. However, it is a lot harder to go fast consistently compared to the 250f. The lack of torque being the major difference. I could see someone getting bored with it, especially if you have a lug type riding style. Myself being only 150 lbs, it's more than enough for me and I never find myself wishing for more.

My biggest concern was the WP air fork. Having spent my whole life on springs I was a bit worried. I'm happy to say they awesome and there is no need to worry. If you are thinking about a Yamaha then this isn't even a problem.

At your size I would say a 250 2 stoke might be a better option. The newer 250s are smooth and very competitive with the 250f's. The local races around me allow both 2 and 4 strokes in the 250 class. I can't answer about a 150 as I've never riden one. Emig did though at Lorettas and he seemed to do just fine.

I have never really been the person to lug the bike but I don't want to buy a bike and have to pour money into it trying to squeeze more power out of it. If i were to get a new 250f it would prob be a YZ but if it was a 125 it would be one of the Austrian bikes. I have also been tossing around the idea to buy a 125 and buying a 150 kit so i can swap between a 125 and a 150.

My 150 is my favorite bike I've owned. At this point, there is no reason not to get the 125 with the 150 kit.

Once I got my 150, my 450 sat and was eventually sold. Currently, my 250sx gets ridden HALF as much as my 150sx.

If you are not racing and buying new, get the 250f and look after it.
It can repay you with years of trouble free riding on an easy bike that you don't have to push you limits.

The thing is I've blown up my 2020 yz250f twice in 60 hours and i do all my oil changes every 3-5 hrs. One of the big reasons I'm leaning towards a 2 stoke is for simplicity and price of rebuilds. There is nothing more enjoyable about screaming a 2 stroke. I am less interested in racing so I am not trying to be the fastest guy at the track. So having a slower bike is not a big deal.

How is it blowing up? Is it sucking dirt through the stock filter setup therefore thrashing valves? Ive put 41 hours on my 21 YZ250F and im not exactly nice to it either. She gets rev'd hard and even ran low/no oil for about 4-5 minutes. All good still. Everything looks good.

Racing to me is not very fun to do often. Probably because im not fast enough to win. Im sure winning makes racing FAR more enjoyable. That being said I do want to add a 125/150 to the stable with my 250F. A alternative/backup bike to have loads of fun. Something light to throw around on the track and in the air.

Blowing up a new YZ250F twice within 60 hrs is a bit concerning.

But to your question, I have a '21 YZ250F and a '19 YZ125 (w/ the usual mods.) I love both and the 125 is probably the bike that I think is cooler. But that being said, I am not sure if I could do a 125 as my only/primary bike anymore. The 250F is my go-to just for how easy it is to ride. And while the 2stroke is "more fun" in the flickability and overall character of it, the 250F fun comes from just riding smooth and getting around the track by being able to do things easier than on the 2stroke, while still being able to be aggressive. So that's just me. I know you mentioned a 150 and that could be an option but I am not sure the added power really is going to make the 150 easier to ride, as the hit /window is still there. But maybe that is what you are looking for. I personally do not like that, which is why I like the YZ125. The power is broad and easy to use for a 2stroke. My friend has a nice modded 150 that I've been itching to ride back to back with my bikes. He's recovering from an injury, so we haven't been able to make that happen yet. But I'd love to be able to get feedback from running all 3 at the same track and compare.

I’m currently in similar boat, my sxf 350 is up for sale as I know smaller displacement will be more fun however torn between a 150, 250 or 250f.
I’m worried I’m too big for a 150 (200pounds +), a 250 2t would still rip my arms off and leave me back where I am now with the 350 or getting a 250f which the only drawback being possibly less smiles that going back 2t.

If you’re worried about not having enough power and don’t want another 4 stroke I would recommend a Yz250 2 stroke

Or CR500 of course

Too be fair the first time the motor blew it was a really weird thing. A detent on the backside of your shift shaft rattled loose and bounced around the bottom end got sucked into the oil pump. Cracked the oil pump and starved the head of oil. It welded a cam to the head and blew up in the air.

But I really think my options are either a yz250, yz250f or a 150sx. A buddy of mine just bought a 2022 ktm 150 so will prob end of tossing a leg over it at some point. Ive never ridden a 150 is it that big of a difference between a 125.

if u thinking about buying a NEW 125- whats holding you back from the YZ125?

Anyway- in your case i would get myself a yz250 2stroke, they have great engines and a broad spread of power.

You won’t be happy with the feel of the wp components after coming off a Yamaha. The YZ also has a broader powerband

I've had plenty of 125s in the past, along with every other engine size apart from a 500. I'm currently on a 2016 SX150 and it's definitely the most fun bike of them all. You still have the thrill of screaming the bike like a 125 but it has a bit more power to help when you forget a down shift or up steep hills. I'm 38 and don't race much anymore, but if I I was just focused on results I'd be on a 250 2 stroke as they have much more bottom end a little more mid than the 150. I raced a YZ250 for the 2019 season and it was awesome, but needs a little more respect than the 150, which you can really throw around

I think at this point I just need to ride a 150. I have only ridden a yz250 2 stoke one time just the other weekend and i really likes the power delivery but curious how it would feel on a track. I just really want a bike I can hang over the back and flick around and I think a 150 fits that bill.

I rode my friend's YZ250 and a TC250 back to back with my YZF and the 250 2stroke is much more explosive. The 250F felt tame, in comparison. It is somewhat hard to manhandle a 250 2-stroke. It sounds like the 150 might be your best bet. And the peak power of the 150 is right there w your 250f, if not more. Just more work to use.

I agree with you 100% that a 250 two stroke is not really a bike you just throw around and that they are a handful. They are definitely a bike you have to respect.

Buy a 22 150sx and never look back. Throw an FMF pipe / silencer and a VForce valve system and you'll never wipe the smile off your face. More torque than a 125 and I can hang with 250f's. And nothing feels better than railing the outside of a corner as you pass a 4 stroke.

I’m 6’ 195# and love the shit out of my lil ole 2000 CR125. (Avatar pic)

Was hoping to get a newer model YZ 125 in the next month or so. Austrian is not out of question though...

I own both & have way more fun on the 250f.

The 125 is fun in certain situations play riding on the right track but other than that the 250f is way more fun for me.

I think ive knocked the 125 off the list now it is between yz250 yz250f or a ktm 150sx

Check out the new Honda 250F. I am going to it from my Yamaha 250F, just because it's a bit better cornering / lighter feeling / better ergos bike.

As a vet rider at 165 pounds, I just don't think a 125 is that fun to have as the only bike in the stable. Sure, it can be fun to hold a 125 wide open, but I am way smoother and safer on my 250F.

Also, you either had some really bad luck or are doing something wrong maintenance wise. Water and dirt are the enemy, keep them out of your intake, and keep your oil and oil filter fresh (4 hours tops), and a 250F should last at least 50 hours with nothing but a clutch.

Well the bike blew really early at like 25hours out of bad luck. Then at about 50. I have ridden dirt bikes all my life I know to keep filters clean and do oil often. I change oil every 2 rides. I think i have just had bad luck with this bike. My last yz250f(20216) had about 60 hours on it and never had a issue. I really like Yamaha's and don't think ill go to a different 250f. One of the big reason is that a bunch of my parts off my 20 would go onto a 22. Another reason i would be changing is cause i am so comfy on a yz.

Nice, I agree the Yamaha is basically old reliable and comfy. Hard to beat the suspension and stability on it. I would just stick with the 22 Yamaha 250F then. The newer one will handle slightly better than the 20 you have.

Also, I used the twin-air power flow kit on my Yamaha, this allows you to stick some clean towels in the airbox while you wash it. Even with a wash cover, I have found that water can leak in the airbox, evidenced by wet towels. Another trick is to put the bike on its side while you take off the filter. I also clean off loose dirt off the filter before I remove it.

I don't like how the 21/22 removed that boot inside the airbox. At least with the 20, if some dirt fell in, you had a good chance it did not go directly to your intake and you could vacuum it out. With the 21/22, it goes straight down. I really like how Honda has the filter upside down. Still have to be careful about water during the wash, but dirt is less of an issue.

That is pretty cool to hear that everyone is liking the new Honda. I, like the OP, is a little biased towards the YZ250F, having owned a bunch and just feeling like my comfort level is so much higher on a YZ than another brand. That being said, I know from letting people ride my bikes, they either come back and love it or come back and think it is a little bit weird feeling (if they are used to another brand.) So it appears that the Honda might be the 250F of choice for those who like what Yamaha brings to the table but just wants a better ergo/cornering package.

I agree that Honda has made some good changes to the crf250 but I'm still hearing complaints about suspension. The YZ on the other hand has had the best out of the box suspension for years.

If waiting is possible, id wait on the new Honda 250. Mainly because most people are in the honeymoon phase and will overlook the little things. I have done that on every new bike. First 10 hours are "omg this thing is fking sick, ill never need a different bike, its 100x better than my last one!". Then after the machine fully breaks in or I start pushing the machine I find its flaws or things I dont like.

Got my 08 KTM 200 XC, WAS super stoked on it. Thought my 17 KTM 250 SX was the only bike ill ever want. After 20 hours, my mind wanted something different.
19 Honda 250R, 40 hours and I wanted try something different because I didnt like the engine.
41 hours on my YZ250F since march and forks are too soft and I want more top end. Ill see what happens to it after I get the suspension changed from stock and a Vortex ECU.

Granted as my speed and technique has changed, so has my desires in a bike. I thought everyone one of those bikes was absolutely perfect, for 20 hours or so

I thought everyone one of those bikes was absolutely perfect, for 20 hours or so
This is honestly a fantastic post and is 100% true.
