I love the smell of Cerakote in the morning. Gonna give these pieces a finishing blast to clean them up some more, but first these calipers have to come apart because I'm definitely sprucing up these hideous things.
I'm still mulling over color choice. I'll decide by the time I tape everything up.
First batch came out solid, although I'm on the fence about the color. I've never used this particular shade and thought it would come out differently, but I'll think about it over some beers tonight. I have to weigh up how this will contrast with the remaining parts I still have to coat. There will be 2-3 different colors of cerakote on this bike, so the neutrality of the colors is something I take into account as well to prevent the bike looking too busy. We don't want any Bozo the Clown bikes...
Bead blasted clean:
Polished, and off to be clear anodized:
Also, we got the swingarm back. Turned out pretty sharp. Gonna be a bummer if we have to put graphics over it, but if we do I'll see if they can at least do a clear backing. Here's how that turned out:
Should have the frame back early this week. I'm interested to see how that blue turned out. Once we have that back, we can start actually building this thing up and making it look like a bike again. That's it for this week though!
Pit Row
And yeah, San Diego Powdercoat knocked it out of the park on this! They do a lot of frames, and are moto people themselves so they know what they're doing on this sort of application.
Surprisingly, all sprocket bolt holes were actually intact. I thought they would be elongated for sure, however I can pull the rear hub bearings out by hand. YZ/YZF owners, if your stock wheels have some time on them, I would inspect this. It's a loose bearing tolerance with soft cast aluminum, and even the front has its own issues with premature bearing corrosion from these bikes still somehow coming stock with non-sealed bearings in the front hub.
Anyway, the rear hub is toast, and the spokes are all corroded. What's a guy to do?
FasterUSA hubs in a dark bronze/mag color, Bulldog spokes and nipples all laced to Excel Takasago rims with a 19x2.15 on the rear instead of the stock 19x1.85.
thanks
PS - i like that PC blue. I had my suspension parts for a Chevy Avalanche I had a few years back done in that color. It was actually a 3-step powdercoat - primer layer, followed by "chrome", then topped with a transparent candy blue. Pictures don't do it justice, it's gorgeous in person. This is gonna be a great looking bike!!
