I had an '86 RM 125, dumped about $400 into the motor and pipe, and I don't think it made a difference. Then I rode a friends stock '86 CR125 and that bike felt like a 250 by comparison. I knew a few friends who raced the '85 RM's here in central Ohio, and their bikes were anything but slow. They were screamers, but they were fast, not KX125 fast, but if kept on the pipe would keep up with the KX's.

Yeah, got a new carb from the Sudco guys, it's hard to beat the PWK. It's reliable and works well. Bike is parked now, gathering dust. Might sell it, I don't know what to do with it. LOL. It's barely been ridden but here's a video we did with that bike and my 88 YZ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajTASffB-mc&t=149s

This bike is a polished pig. Looks great in photos from 15ft away but it's a hodge-podge after tearing it down. I have a frame and air box in good shape for starters. Everything else will need to be rebuilt/replaced like luckynino mentioned above. I paid way too much for it site unseen, but I'm okay with it because I've been looking for one for a long time and I finally got my hands on one.

Looks like a great bike to start with....I looked at 2 of these in the last year or so, wanting to add one to the collection, both were hammered and sellers still asking 1500-1800$ for them...Look forward to your build...

On such bikes you need to do a full disassembly to inspect and rebuilt basically everything! I have rebuilt 3 such bikes from scratch. One was my '89 VRP full aluminium custom bike. You can check my builds in my Flickr-Albums here Nino's '89 VRP: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ottospeed/albums/72157657243148579 Nino's '89 Racebike: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ottospeed/albums/72157668784699162 Nino's '89 Practice Bike: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ottospeed/albums/72157682317899484 Also parts that from the outside seem ok won't be ! Usually seals got hard over time and don't do their job anymore. Swingarm bearings , leverages, steerer, wheels, also inside the engine...everything needs to be replaced with new bearings & seals! During the 1st...

Yes. Has spark. Put in a new wiseco 55mm piston. May have measured wrong. Compression is low.

I am working on an '88 right now. I bought a used set of pegs as one of mine on the bike was slightly mangled. If you want the old set just to check fitment and compare width you are welcome to have mine.

The 88 Rm pegs should bolt right on, they are marginally wider. If you want to keep your pegs & pin size the same, you can weld on Works Connection peg wideners. Any newer pegs will require drilling out the pin hole on the frame & coming up with a solution to the spring placement… here is a photo of an 87 I restored using some leftover 92 Rm pegs I had. You will be lucky to find a pipe & silencer for this bike, they are getting very scarce… check the water pump impeller, they are known for breaking &...
