There is a big difference in experiencing a hammered track in practice, and racing on a hammered track where your health relies on the ability of others around you. I have no issue with them having a rough practice track to navigate, but the field isn't skilled enough top to bottom to sufficiently reduce risk under racing conditions. I'm an advocate for giving them the cleanest track they can for racing. Sure speeds are higher, but you don't have to worry (as much) about someone less skilled cross-rutting and taking someone else out.

Bet none of you keyboard warriors have kids that are trying to make it. I was thinking EXACTLY what Reed said 5 min before his interview. He too has seen his kid in the ER, and in ICU as a result of racing. When it's your kid on the track unconscious, with a bone sticking out of his arm you'll feel a little differently.
