Okay, I know it's a long shot, but if Reed was to win the SX championship, would that asterisk finally be removed from the minds of everyone as far as him not being able to win over the years, unless the top guys (RC and JS) were out.
There is no such thing as an asterisk in MX except the ones you put on your knees. The BEST racer ALWAYS will win championships, not always the fastest. Remember crashes count and so do mechanicals. I don't even think that an asterisk should be considred if your compitition dosn't line up, cause training crashes count too. Motocross success depends on much more that being the fastest and the fittest or even luckiest. The only place for an astertisk is for some roided up player in a game or hobby like baseball.

No asteriks.
With that said.....If he was to win the title this year I would think it would be his most gratifying.

If Reed wins, he should get an asterisk, for sure.

Not for winning when someone else was 'effin up and keeping his cool.

No, he gets one for winning, plus building, financing and running his team that year.

Tell me, has anyone ever done That?

Does anyone remember that he bought an insurance policy on himself betting that he would win the outdoor championship?? If you want to look at a rider who has heart..........i think that qualifies.

Asterisk ??? Maybe put an asterisk next to that championship ................ won on testicular fortitude.

The short answer is;

Yes it is a long shot and yes it would be removed.

This discussion has been around a while and i always found it kinda ironic when people try to argue that there is 'No such thing"

Clearly there is such a "Thing" or we wouldn't be spending so much time talking about it. Reed himself admits he has to deal with it.

Anyways, wrote this last year...

*

The asterisk. The poor misunderstood little star. I love the asterisk. When it pops up it breaks the surface and makes one think past the layer of simple active consciousness. Sure Chad won the Outdoor Nationals because he had the most points or Bubba stood on top of the SX title box last year because he finished with a few points more than that second place guy - nothing vague or ambiguous there. No thought needed. No tedious exercise of thinking beyond the veneer of self–explanation.

But throw the * into the equation…

Now you have to think. What does it mean? What could have, should have or might have been? Not an easy question and of course, every fan of any sport, when asked to interpret the asterisk, sees it his way.

Isn’t it amazing that such a small little symbol can spawn so much controversy? Some even try to deny the asterisk exists! Poor little misunderstood asterisk…

Motocross / SX is FULL of asterisks. The asterisk doesn’t care whether it is a single event or a Championship title. When it pops up, it can not be ignored. I am not saying the asterisk symbolizes what would have been, for that is the uncertain outcome of a parallel path we did not travel. But could have or even should have is more like it.

Could Mike Alessi have won the Outdoors in 2009 if he didn’t tweak his knee? Most moto fans would argue he should have. Could Chad have won the SX title last year if Bubba would have crashed just one more time? You bet. Would the history books have been permanently altered if Hananah didn’t “let Brock bye”? How could you argue they would not have? Did Langston lose the 125 Outdoor Championship because his rear wheel blew up in the last moto of the last race at Steel City? One of the all time greatest asterisks! Do you remember who won?

Type “MX1 World Championship 2007” into Google. This is what you get:

RAMON CLINCHES MX1 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

“The Suzuki rider, who only took the points lead last weekend at Donington Park, was effectively handed the title when long time leader Josh Coppins withdrew from Sunday's title showdown due to the effects of an ongoing shoulder injury - which ate up the Yamaha rider's once 107 point advantage.”

Sounds like a fugg’n asterisk for Ramon to me…

Love or hate the asterisk, it has been around a lot longer than any of us and has provided the foundation for countless hours of thought provoking dialogue (Yeah, that’s what we do on all those moto message boards)

And for that, I thank you Mr. *

Sure - I understand the * represents a big 'IF"…

And "IF" you strapped a rocket to a cows a$$ it might fly over the moon -Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...

But that kind of thinking means you just don’t get the mighty *

So for those of you who don't appreciate the mighty * -

You can go back to your superficial, flat–earth way of looking at things and not give a single thought beyond the obvious…

Dungey already has one on his last years championship. Who was there only him! It's already been proven that he can't win against the fast guys. Even matthes said that.

Reed does not have it in him.

The game is not as close as the score.

Reed can't beat the best guys when it matters. Never has never will.

Good post @jakefortyeight

Denying the exstience of the mighty '*' seems to be the fashionable opinion this week. Either that or theres a lot of Dungey fans around ;-)

Speaking of which, the * hating Dungey fans would be the first to shove it down your neck if he was dominating this year like he did in 2010. Well, after RV went down. muhaha.

I wish Weimer and Grant were out there too. Be interesting to see where they fitted in, espcially Weimer.

You obviously don't take Reed, or anyone else for that matter, seriously. If that's the case then shouldn't James have an * by his big bike championships because he never beat RC in a series that RC competed in from beginning to end to win any of his 3 titles. James "only" really ever had to beat Reed to win his titles but since Reed isn't that great why wouldn't James have an *? You're unbelievable.

Yet when you head over to the AMA site and look at the official results there is no *

NO matter what type of little pleasant post you want to put together about the little *

It does not exist, it is still something made up buy guys and gals that obviously dont see the point in running championships, I championship consists of a pre determained amount of rounds, to win said championship you need to compete in as many rounds as you possible can and and earn more points than your competitiors whoever they may be , if your competitior is laying on the ground injured, sitting on the side of the track with a mechanical, not entering races because of pre season or practice crashes that is all part of being in a CHAMPIONSHIP.

The * is only bought up by fans looking for an excuse to discredit a rider for some unknow reasons, most likley because they are somewhat peeved that there live did not turn out the way they planned and they never got a chance at the title they dreamed off, or maybe they just lost a junior race once apon a time because a chain broke, or they got a puncture and they never quite got over it !

Maybe it is just easier to sit and discredit champions while sitting back on a couch never knowing how much work it would really take to even compete at that level.

What ever the reason these sad little people need to put a * next to a champions efforts is beyond me, You enter a series you finish a series healthy or even unhealthy with the most amount of points you are the champion no ifs no buts.

1 of 5 guys is going to be crowed champion after 6 more main events this year , one of them can still possibly do it without winning a single main this year, and all credit to him if he does, and i will neve put a * next to any of these guys, i have more respect for what they do than that.

Real simple for me. Would Chad Reed have rather of won his Championship's with RC & Bubba present or not?

You should know the answer to that one if you are a Chad Reed fan. He has said himself he wishes they were there. Now ask yourself why?

That right there is Chad Reed's asterisk...

1 race win so far and you guys are already talking about the title?

Go back and see rmz's post.

Until that changes, you won't need to worry about this year's asterisk whether you believe in asterisks or the tooth fairy or weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
