Great to seem the innovating on the bike, but why is that starter so big? That looks like it could start my truck.

I dont think its really any bigger than any other one there just isnt room behind the cylinder to hide it because it wasnt made for one so they had to mount it this way.

Back in 2008 the ktm was the same way before it was designed from the factory to have room behind the cylinder.

Exactly! Have you measured battery voltage during a start?

It drops, then takes a few seconds to recover and contained energy decreases every cycle.

That's why you have to maintain/charge a battery and why mfgrs recommend a 15-30 second pause before refiring.  Even if the engine is turning, it still pulls voltage for spark and fuel (through the ecu) or it wont start. I suspect all Li batteries also have BMS for heat so they wont output when hot (after a few seconds) which reduces the risk of a thermal event.

So you might continue turning the engine (and burning your starter motor in the process) but it's not going to fire/start until the battery recovers.

You have no concept about how lithium batteries work and should just take the L, but we all know you won't.

Tap the button and let the fuel pump run first. Why? A COLD lithium battery has less power than a warm one. You need to warm them up to get maximum power out of them.

Measured all kinds of things electrically on my bikes, and I used to do races that were dead engine starts so I'm intimately familiar with what it takes to make an e-start bike fire quickly and reliably without resorting to a 24v piggy back system.

Again, if you've had problems, it's on you not the bike. And based on your posting history, you obviously aren't the brightest on this forum.

My guess is because on a sled if there is an issue you just wrap the strap around the primary and spin it to life. And of course, 2 stroke is a bit easier to spool up.

Not as easy to do on a bike? Other than the old school bump start.

If on a bike and the cap fails your kinda screwed. Can't easily jump start it, but if it was a charging issue for the cap I guess you could "jump" the cap from a good bikes battery? Never played with caps/coils much other than using them to fire spark plugs for potato guns.

Have been around the sleds with capacitor starting systems, but I had a turbo four stroke at the time and was running a normal battery/e-start system. Never had to mess with either of them!

I suppose it shouldn't be that hard to do, just need a lot bigger cap than what is on the bike now. IIRC the early non e-start/EFI bikes had a cap to do an initial pressurization of the fuel system. Isn't this how the Zook still works now? The early 90s Arctic Cat EFI sleds worked that way too. First pull of the cord charged the cap and fired up the fuel pump. Second pull of the cord started the sled. And hey, they were Suzuki engines!

It's @#$ time to do away with the production rule. It had it's time when there was a huge discrepancy between factory and production bikes, but that time is passed.

There are two different suppliers of 2001 CR500 cases for the aftermarket, but we can't get a custom case and starter for an RMZ because "rules".

The rules allow for custom side covers, just not the crankcase halves.

30 seconds? Is that from the very first e start lol? I’ll attach the 2026 yz instructions. It says “a few seconds” to wait if it doesn’t start. Let’s also not forget those 5seconds of clicking the button, that’s equivalent to kicking the bike like 20 times lol. Just stop man. I truly don’t believe you’ve kicked a 4 stroke and used the button on a modern 4 stroke. It’s not even debatable how beneficial the button is especially in a race.

I don't like spending money on e-start components that fail every year. The next bike I buy will have a kickstarter.

In my 18 years working on Honda powersports products ive never replaced a starter on a competition model.

Ive had a handful of starter reduction gears on 450s. I have a hunch they may have a common denominator causin it (holding the throttle open to start) kind of like the TRX450R told you not to.

What bikes are you replacing estart components on every year?

Thats pretty much how the orignal kick start EFI bikes were.

They stored energy from the stator in a capacitor to power the 12v stuff and make the bike run.

A battery is pretty much a capacitor, it doesnt make electricity it just stores it.

It looks pretty  good, idk if they just added the e start or if they somehow created a new engine.

Every year may be an exageration, it feels like every year but that's because it's across different bikes.

Just replaced the starter motor on a Beta 450RX. It's a Mitsuba SM18, same starter motor that's on many other dirtbikes and ATVs.

Why did the starter motor  burn up? Either not enough force (battery seemed fine but replaced it anyway) or not enough engagement (so I replaced the sprag clutch).  That's around $600 in parts.

Last year battery for KLR

Year before that starter clutch for YZ450

Have you ever dropped a bike while you're at max HR in a racing situation? Then pick it up and kick it half a dozen times or more before it fires? If not, you have no idea how much the button saves your energy.

A sprint lap doesn’t even deplete you like kicking a bike does. It’s BRUTAL.
