DOC SAID 34 MINUTES AGO
Folks - I'm Ian's older brother Zep (Joe Jr) and I'm also a brain doctor by training, in route to Daytona now to be with Ian and my parents. I am going to post some info here periodically to keep all of you informed because I know there is much legitimate concern about Ian right now.

First off I'd like to say that he needs your best wishes right now. He remains in a medically-induced coma and will be for several days. The rationale behind the come is to keep the degee of brain swelling to a minimum - to keep the metabolic demands of his brain as low as possible. The next 48 hours are critical; he had a good night last night and this morning showed no additional signs of brain edema. Very positive indeed! The velocity of the impact was enough to cause some bleeding in the brain, which ia a serious concern. Right now he is in stable but critical condition. By the end of the week we should have a better grip on how well he will do in terms of prognosis.

It goes without saying that this is a very serious injury but we have good reason to remain hopeful and cautiously optimistic - as many of you know Ian is a bright, healthy and motivated kid and we all love and care for him tremendously. The staff at Halifax is doing exactly what needs to be done to ensure he has the best outcome possible. At this point, your best wishes and prayers are needed. We will remain by Ian's side, with him and supporting him.

The road ahead is difficult if not impossible to predict this early but again, we have good reason to be hopeful. The next 2 days are huge - yours thoughts and concerns are welcome and myself and the medical staff at Hailfax will be doing all that we can to get him into the recovery phase ASAP.

If you have any questions - just post them up here. Ill be glad to offer what I can without breaching Ian's and my family' privacy and integrity in this difficult time. Ian is in good hands and your thoughts and prayers are all important. - Zep Trettel

Sorry BobbyM, if you had taken the time to read this thread, what you posted has already been put in this thread!

Update 3/8:

On behalf of the entire Trettel Family, thank you all so much for your support and concern for Ian in this very difficult time. I am going to keep this brief and to the point, again without compromising our families privacy but doing what we think Ian would want us to do right now. However, you can expect an official family statement to be released in the next day.

Ian remains in a medically-induced coma to protect him from the ill effects of post-traumatic brain swelling. On Monday afternoon he underwent a surgical procedure to allow his brain additional room to expand until the swelling resolves; the bleed in the right side of his brain is also stable and unchanged. This morning his condition was stable and the surgery appears to have been largely successful. Now we all just have to wait and stay hopeful.

The ICU staff at Halifax continues to monitor all of his vital signs and adjust his moment-to-moment care as needed. At this time it remains essential for Ian to be in a quiet and calm environment so that his brain can rest, and we are doing our best to respect that need. As I have said before, we remain very positive but cautiously optimistic as Ian's road ahead will be long and difficult. It is far too early to think about a prognosis but we have good reason to be hopeful.

Your continued support and thoughts are so greatly appreciated. Stay positive everybody and let's get Ian through this!

- Joe Trettel Jr., on behalf of the entire Trettel Family

Just not cool this stuff has to happen. Love this sport to death, but sure hate how it treats its participants some times. All the thoughts and prayers I can beg borrow and steal will be heading to the whole Trettel family.

Here is an official PR that came out today:

Ian Trettel Update

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (March 10, 2011) – The following is an update from the family of Ian Trettel regarding the condition of the Rockstar Energy Suzuki rider following his practice crash last weekend at the Daytona Supercross . . .

“On Saturday, March 5th, Rockstar Energy Suzuki rider Ian Trettel sustained a head injury during practice at the AMA Supercross event in Daytona, Florida. He was quickly taken to Halifax Medical Center, where he was placed in a medically-induced coma. The accident caused bleeding as well as swelling in his brain and both have been stabilized with medical and surgical interventions. At this time, Ian remains in critical condition, but he is now stable and we expect his condition to improve from this point forward.”

“We have good reason to be hopeful that Ian will make a terrific recovery. However, it is too early to discuss his prognosis, so we will continue to remain cautiously optimistic. Ultimately, it will be Ian's remarkably strong will, perseverance, dedication, and support from his family and friends that will pull him through the rehabilitation process.”

“We thank all of you for your continued support and ask that you maintain optimism and hope. Like he has done so many times, Ian will bounce back from this and we shall all be by his side to fight with him.”

A friend crasched during Mx practise, a year ago and they put him in coma for two weeks. swollen brain, punctured loungs etc. He was a absolute nutcase when they woke him up. Talking with his father very frightend, there where thugs next to him visiting the bed besides. sitting there and didn't had a clue who was in front of him when friends visit him. He was living in a bad dream. But after 2 really scary weeks more his brain started to tick and start laying the puzzle. He is back racing today on very high level. of course he lost muscles and condition but he started training those things after 3 months and did a pretty quick recover. He is the same crazy happy person today. So stay positive and don't give up hope! Best wishes to him and his family.

That`s really good news to hear. There`s been prayers sent daily from my son and I for Ian`s complete recovery and also to his family to help them get through this tough time and whatever obstacles Ian may face in the future. My son had a brain injury when he was 9 years old that left him in a 3 mo. coma with 1% chance of survival and a guarantee that his only function would be involuntary. Today he goes to UCF and is having a blast living life to its fullest. I never met Ian but from what I understand he is a terrific young man and I just have this feeling that everything is going to be fine. His recovery may get difficult from time to time but with the support Ian has I hopefully look forward to the day when I read about his amazing recovery.

A young, up-and-coming, Aussie rider called Luke George had a bad crash in late 2009. He was in a comma for about a week and in hospital for much longer. With the support of medical staff, family, friends, the motocross community and a lot of rehabilitation Luke made a full recovery and raced again; albeit deciding soon thereafter to retire from competition.

Luke's story, as with the story of Big's friend, isn't meant to lessen the seriousness of Ian's situation or to offer false hope; but rather to provide examples of positive outcomes which may, in some small way, give a little comfort to Ian's family and friends at this dark time.
