Just watched the coverage of Daytona on Youtube.
Enjoyed the lites race and congrats to Blake Baggett on his dominating win.
When Erin interviewed him on the podium you could tell he was soo "pumped" to have won.

Erin then asked Justin Barcia an interesting question about the toughness of the track, which he totally ingnored answering and just spouted the speil of thanking his sponsors!
Sorry, but his answer just made him look stupid to thousands of TV viewers.
Somebody please get him some media training, so he listens to the questions asked, can craft an interesting answer and work his sponsor thankyou's into his reply, naturally like RV and James answer.

He should also shave his gnarly peach fuzz if he wants to attract any pussy.

But then again I had some so I could buy beer with my fake id when I was his age.

But it wasnt fugly like his.

And I was still pulling tang with my social skills I learned in a place called public school.

But fuck it. The kid rides a dirt bike and shreds. I say let him do as he wants and he can learn from his experiences.

Some of the riders do that from time to time....
They just sorta say what they want to.
I can remember CP being asked questions every now and and he would just sorta ignore the question and talk about what he wanted to talk about. Smile

I think an underlying factor to such a short interview was the fact that Barcia had nothing for Baggett this weekend even though he was right behind him in the first lap. Yes, I'm aware of his wrist but no one likes to lose.

A lot of these guys could benefit from a little media training. I heard one top pro say "you know" at least 12 times in a three minute interview. It was like every fifth word was "you know."

I posted on the issue yesterday here and agree with you. The guy couldn´t sell Cheryl Cole with his homeless look and insincere podium "interview". Erin could have just asked him: "so, who are the unlucky money-wasters who´ve put their money in your team, for you to make them look stupid?"

It really is THE dumbest thing I know about this sport! It´s sad, pathetic and dumb, all at the same time. And after the little sponsor name dropping game ends, we go straight to more commercials! It´s a pathetic way to promote anything, really.
They should take a look at how Luongo does it. It´s tasteful, not annoying, and we actually care who these companies are. It´s very professional and done the way MotoGP and F1 does it.
At the very least take a look at how Bagget did it: the guy promoted himself and his sponors in a VERY good way last Saturday - without even mentioning them I might add!

He's just a young kid up there. Giving a public speech in front of millions of fans is probably a little nerve racking for them. However, I do agree with you. They are "professionals" and should be a little more personable on the podium.

He´s not a young kid anymore. Ken Roczen gives awesome interviews. He´s both younger AND English isn´t his first language. People need to stop treating the riders like their shit don´t stink. Barcia sucks at giving podium interviews, and as a fan and a consumer it will affect my view of him and the companies he represent by being up there. Smile

I am not a Barcia Barney fan but:

At least he didn't whine and cry like Bagget did the week before when he got third.

I think the lumber jack look suits him. it makes him stand apart from the rest of the guys.

He was hurting and he just wanted off the podium.

why do you think he hasn't had media training ? he did what he was trained to do

when;
A) you didn't hear the question
b) forgot the question asked
c) don't want to answer it

Would you rather he say " it was a team effort and I just go out and give 110 % every day"

What does that have to do with him answering a simple question or two?

Hey at least he thanked his sponsors. Blake never even mentioned them. But he did just win Daytona and I am sure he was at a loss for words.

So basically he messed up the interview that would reach the most people and consumers? That´s even worse...

@ Sunhouse... I watch my share of MotoGP anf F1 and I don't recall those guys mentioning their sponsors

I think Barcia was hurting and just didn't feel like talking about his wrist and dealing with Erin's always interersting line of questioning ... how he looks is just fine with me, he is just having a little fun and really all that matters is what happened on the track.

That´s the point I was trying to get across! If they mention anything they usually do it very tasteful, like mentioning that the "Good Year tires are really good in warm weather and on fast circuits".
It takes a good 30 seconds just to say the name of these series: "Monster Energy AMA supercross and the FIM World supercross championship"" etc. Sounds dumb, and you can tell the commentators are really careful about saying the title sponsor in every mention too.

Ok, I get your point and really I agree with you to an extent. But I think that Justin's choice of hairstyle is really irrelevant and maybe even a selling point for the demographic that a some of his sponsors are trying to reach.

I suppose his hair and looks don´t really matter, and it has - as you say - very little to do with the subject. But I guess we can agree that looking like a cave man and not being able to answer a very simple question does not help him or his sponsor in the PR department. Nor does it do much for the sport and its already stereotypical redneck reputation. Laughing

I see both sides to this, but think about it, why where so many guys having a hard time finding sponsors this year? If I had an energy drink company and wanted my name out there, would I rather sponsor a kid in the Lites class that looks stupid on TV or a Craftsman Truck and have someone polished talk about my product? Supercross is on live TV and is watched by millions every Saturday night. I was racing Saturday afternoon (kart racing) and half the guys at the track were trying to load up and get out of there after the races to catch the supercross live. There is a huge audience and these guys are reaching us and with a little effort, they could serve there sponsors better and even bring in more money and bigger sponsors.

Media training is not that hard and can be done in two days. I took one of these classes this year and its amazing how stupid you look and sound on TV when you watch it back. Ummmmm, Ummmm, seems to be the things you say over and over. At the end of the class you are much better and you learn to get your message out no matter what question they ask you.

The billy goat thing does look funny, but who cares, he is a MX rider and they are not supposed to like like Beaver Cleaver.

He didn't win. Honestly, why try to go all "hollywood" and draw all the attention to yourself when you're on the second peg of the podium. Get up there, thank your sponsors and get out of the 20 seconds or so you have to speak. Let the guy who won the race chat about the race and thank his sponsors, it's his night.

So all pro racers should be required to take a public speaking course.Be dressed and groomed like a GAP /A.E. model And act like an upscale ivy league gent. Hell I like my long hair. It helps to hide my sometimes redkneck. I really don't think we need to sterilize our sport. It has always been a sport for non conformist types. Cool Laughing Cool

Right on!

Being different makes it more interesting, like I said earlier, it makes him stand out.

Shit, we're talking about him!

The problem this sport is the media is dealing with 4th grade dropouts.

By the time a riders brain catches up with there age they are retired.

Canard is really good and Stewart has come along way. The list is very small.

IMO, RV is the worst ever on the podium.. He is like a deer looking into headlights. Theres nothing there.

Post a reply to: Barcia desperately needs media training
