Points structure

I think more riders would be in the championship hunt mentally if it were a progression points system, as odd as that would be.

 I wish more people had a shot at the title at the final rounds...  the plus 3 over second for a win adds up quickly.... 

Best way to do this is reset points for last round to 0 for top 10. 

Boom the best guy who's been winning the most, getting the most holes hots still wins.

For SX, they should award points for transferring straight to the main in heat races. Doesn't have to be a full 26 points for a heat race win, but maybe something like 10 for a win and one point down from there. Outdoors could start awarding points for qualifying positions, but since we don't do race qualifiers like the GPs do, it might be a bit more difficult.

I've always felt like the riders should score the same points as their position. Low score at the end of the season wins. SX should be the full 22 points for last. ( Riders that don't qualify get an automatic 25pts)Maybe cap MX at 25 for riders finishing 25th-40th?

There needs to be a bigger gap between the top places, the current points system rewards consistency more than anything else and doesn't allow a rider to have a bad race or two, especially in the regional 250 series, a single crash or blown motor can end a championship run. MotoGP and F1 have this right, AMA doesn't. The difference between first and second, and second and third is only 1 point, a win should be worth way more than that. The aim of the points system shouldn't be to try and force a decider at the last round, it should be to find the best rider. Having a bigger spread means a rider can come back from a bad start with a run of wins and the rider defending the championship can't just bag podiums and safely ride out the season.

Option D: Points awarded by fans voting

Option E: Since riders can have negative points, the system needs to be recalibrated to a mean of 0 points.  For this to happpen, penalty points would have to increase slightly and awarded points would have to decrease dramatically. 
To maintain the 0 average, the winning rider would receive the positive number of points that matches the most penalty points received at the event by a single rider.  For example, Vince Friese has -3 penalty points, then the race winner is awarded +3.   The rest of the field would be normally distributed for their position between the range of the winner and last place points, 
 

Option F:   Threshold points, riders need to meet 100 (or whatever) points in order to make the playoffs.  Once they pass the threshold (and qualify playoffs) they no longer earn points.

Option G:  Heirarchy Scoring, rider numbers are assigned based on previous year standings.
If a rider finishes in the same position as their race number, they receive maximum points. (
Points are subtracted for each position difference from the race number.
 

Option H: Handicap Scoring
Race numbers are assigned based on the previous race result. New riders are assigned 22A, 22B, 22C, etc.
Points are awarded based on the difference between race number and result, number 1 finishing 1st results in 0 points. (1-1 = 0)
22C finishing 1st results in 21 points (22 - 1 = 21).

Give the most points for last place. That will shake things up!

They already do that in the Triple Crown format.

I don’t care what point system they use because they are going all in on gimmicks now and nothing I post will change the ridiculousness coming in the future. I just don’t want to see “points as they run” 2 minutes into a moto. 

Especially the 1st moto. Because it isn't true. Or at least, it is highly misleading, the way they score SMX finals. 

And if I remember correctly at the last round, they never even scrolled the end of the leaderboard, so it was impossible to see which riders were in 15th-20th place.

I’d be ok with heat win points
