I would love to see the photo of the hardware with a penny in the photo for perspective. at a glance it's hard to imagine all that in his ankle unless he destroyed the Talus also.
Keep in mind that there is only one blood vessel in there and when it goes bad necrosis will kill all the cartilage. Tough injury and even a younger guy like Jett would take a while to heal fully

So credit Weege for getting more info on this over the weekend. Per the review pod - One of the (12) screws that was in the ankle began backing out, causing the pain he was experiencing at the last round. Another surgery to remove the hardware was never part of the plan, but there is a hope that now that it has been removed, he may be able to get his full range of motion back.
Obviously, there are 12 new holes there that will have to heal before they can test that theory, but I imagine they'll be monitoring that pretty closely to make sure he's 100% before they release him to begin riding again.
My only theory is that theres water inside these redbull cans
The common Talus surgery is 2 screws, my ortho surg from Mayo Clinic does them pretty regularly. That's about 90% of the procedures done according to him. However, he said there are special cases depending on where the break is and if there is additional damage that can significantly change the procedure and add hardware.
