It is a paid hobby.  I have little sympathy for professional athletes who cry poor, or those that think they deserve to be paid.

More power to them all if they can make a living, or even a fortune, from their chosen hobby, but don’t whinge about the struggle when it isn’t paying off the way they hoped.

I’ve been paid a salary most of my working career; which means I did lots of things that weren’t explicitly outlined but were clearly within the scope of my roles and expertise.

For example, if my boss said go jump on a plane to Africa and check out this operation that’s what I would do.  My boss is the one who paid me, not the operation that I went to.  If I’m not mistaken riders get paid by teams, not the event promoters and organisers, so that seems most analogous to me.

More recently I’ve been doing consulting.  Different setup where I get paid only for what I do.  But occasionally under certain circumstances I’ll do small projects or tasks and not charge, because I might deem it worthwhile in order to build a long term relationship that is worth a lot more.

Having said all that, I don’t make my money from a hobby or sport.  I studied, learnt skills, got experience in a field that generates actual wealth.  Many people can, and have, made a good living in my industry.  In contrast, professional sport is a high risk career choice, and individual sports even more so than team sports.  Only a tiny percentage of professional athletes get paid well, and in most sports the career window is fairly short.  Elite athletes do work hard and make a lot of sacrifices, but not more than a lot of other people who work hard at their careers.

At the end of the day you pay your money and you take your chances.  People are free to choose a high risk career and make the best of it, but don’t complain when it doesn’t work out the way you planned.

BTW when I say high risk I mean risk of making a worthwhile living, not physical risk.  There’s a lot of industries that carry a higher level of physical risk than dirtbike racing.
