While $2500 is low for one riders expenses, you're casually omitting that the bulk of that 25k went to bringing his family over for a working vacation. No entity should be covering a riders expenses other than getting them to the event, lodging for the event, and equipment costs. Wanna take your whole family and some friends, that's on you.

This right here. The AMA has no obligation to fly your parents, your sister, and your man friends to Europe on a private jet.

Zacho wasn't complaining though. He even said something along the lines of trim the fat. Take your, your mechanic, the bike and go. He wasn't complaining that he had to spend $25k. But he did say pay your own way if you had to. Just go represent the country if you get the call.

Yeah, Zach has the right attitude about all of this. It's one week per year, so what if it sucks. Race hard, waive your flag and you've won yourself more fans. That equals more clicks to those that care about that metric more than anything else.

One issue mentioned was Star needed to have the bikes for SMX, two crated and sent for MXDN, and another two crated and sent for WSX. There apparently wasn't time to use the same bikes for any of these events.

I agree 100%.  What is the AMA even doing with the money they collect?  Protecingt our sport and riders on Capital Hill?  Nah, this sanctioning body needs to put the funds together for the team/riders to compete in MXDN and ride for our country.  Also, Webb and Hymas over Tomac????  Bro, that is just wrong in so many ways.  ET3 is racing his way back into shape/speed and deserved that spot over those two.  Such disrespect.

Wouldn’t these super agents that the top guys have negotiate to have funding/bonus for MXdN team participation/selection written into their contracts… it’s additional visibility for their sponsors so why wouldnt they agree to something like that, seems like a win win for everyone? i’m not talking huge money but enough to cover the expenses of the rider. Same thing that the team supports the rider IF selected… seems like there is a solution in there somewhere. 🤷‍♂️

This is what I don’t understand. All top riders should know it’s a possibility to be asked to go, so write the terms into the contract. No need to try and solve things at the last moment. It needs to make sense for the rider and the team.

From afar a lot of businesses look like they are making money hand over fist, but once you have the full picture and open up the books you realize how thin the margins actually are.

Maybe ask yourself why such a massive difference in the nature of the responses to the Lawrences not going this year vs Deegan.

You're not thinking ahead as this will defiantly affect Australia and New Zealands choices in the future if they choose a Star based rider. To be honest I don't give two shits about how people react to riders not going....my point is fix the reason riders don't go and it becomes less of a problem in the future....or do nothing and we all end back here again in another useless thread bitching about riders not going and nobody getting paid...just like we did last year and the year before that etc. etc. etc....

Kiwis and Aussies will just borrow some kit suspension and an ECU and jump on a plane, throw on a pipe and a set of bars at the event and just pin it.

As it should be. I don't know why top US riders avoid this race. It's actually pressure free. Just slap on some of your parts from back home, waive the flag, and go have some fun.

Australia will just pick another rider and will still send a team.

Nothing more complicated than that.

All the problems about this race being debated on this board are almost exclusively US problems.

Webb is going on a bike he’s never raced.

People are happy with Webb going because he embodies the spirit and attitude that Rotaholic expressed in his post just above.

As I understand it, $25K is for the bike and support crew per rider. Go listen to JT$ on the issue in the Iron-man thread, he lays it out pretty well.

I believe the riders expense is on the rider's dime less whatever they get from the AMA.

Something I find interesting is this: Nowadays the promoter makes a fucking bag of cash on this race...and all the while....the riders/teams/participants and EVEN THE SPECTATORS are shelling out more $$$ than ever to attend...

Isn't that interesting?

I'm not sure as Zach said he got $2500 from the AMA and he spent $25k on top of that....now was some of that for his family expense? I don't know, but what I do know is the AMA only giving him $2500 for his expenses is a complete failure. I'm just sick and tired of Team USA ending up in the same position every year and yet nothing ever changes or improve and they act like nothings wrong....

Zach took his whole family to that event. He went early, along with El Hombre, to try and prepare on some sand tracks. The Team Fried videos at the time clearly showed Osbourne's whole family with him in Europe.

One thing that has barely been mentioned is how cool it would be to participate in the MXDN. Everyone on the 'it's so hard for the riders to get there' and 'it's so expensive' bandwagon make out like they're being asked to travel to some European backwater to clean toilets for the day. The atmosphere in MXDN is incredible, they get to race riders they don't usually race, they get to represent their country (which should be an honour) and it's something they'll always have in their history.

I'm sure in 25 years the riders won't remember they spent a tiny fraction of their massive incomes nearly as much as they'll remember the experience of the race itself.

The biggest takeaway I got from that which nobody is talking about is what Zach said...He got $2500 for his expenses from the AMA and he spent $25k of his own money.....that is a huge red flag full on failure of the AMA and those in charge of Team USA....there is no way a rider should have to spend $25K. The AMA, the industry and the manufacturers need to either make changes to raising money so no rider has to come out of pocket to go...This team is a complete failure and I would rather we just stop going than go through this every fucking year since 2014. I would like to know how much other riders from other countries are paying out of pocket for this race...my guess would be close to zero...The AMA only gave Zacho $2500...Seriously WTF?

What is Zach spending 25k of his own money on?

As a non US fan it's just disappointing that another year will pass and I won't get to see the 38 against the best Euro based riders. I'm not a fan of his off track persona in the slightest, but he's a bad MF on the track and it's a shame we've never seen him line up against the MXGP guys.

He’s probably not flying coach, so that’s probably $10-15k right there, then figure in a hotel for a week or 2 — even if it’s not The Ritz, you’re probably still looking at a ~$5k bill for that. Getting to $25k in personal expenses doesn’t seem like it’d be too difficult.

Because as soon as one of them does it and it gets out they get vilified as an unpatriotic entitled rider who hates their country. They can’t win unless they give up one of their very limited free weeks of the off season, pay out of their own pocket to race for their country and risk fucking up their next season that they actually get paid for if they get injured.

I completely get it. I’m a huge fan of MXdN. I attended Budds in ‘07, Thunder Valley in ‘10, both Red Buds and Ironman last year. It’s not the same as it used to be. I think the only way I attend the 2028 MXdN is if it is at Millville and only because I have dreamed about that for over 20 years. I’m not going back to that bullshit setup at Ironman and giving my money to InFront if they try to run it back there again.

The hatred people have for HD38 is mind boggling. People are pissed he’s not going, people are mad that Star won’t send bikes (when they’re sending bikes to multiple WSX events), people think he’d get lapped anyway. Get over it people. He got offered wheelbarrows full of money to race WSX and doesn’t want to ride MXON.  The Lawrence’s aren’t going and don’t hear people getting so mad that they can’t sleep at night over it.

star isnt on board with mxon, that leaves deegan no choice unless he wants to fund two bikes, a mechanic and travel out of his own bank account.

star is in for wsx because theyre making money

if the team says we arent going , whats deegan supposed to do break his contract for honor of the country and go ride a one off race lol...he wanted to go, the team said no we arent sending anyone and people are acting like he's the one pulling the strings.

So let me get this straight, the AMA gives Zach $2,500 for his expenses, and instead of working within a reasonable budget, he drops $25k of his own money on potentially ~10-15k business class flight, 5* accommodation and lifestyle for weeks? Bro could easily fly over economy or premium-economy (like most Olympians from Team USA do!), stay in a great hotel, and fly home for a fraction of those claims instead of self-funding a lavish trip and painting the picture like a bloody crisis!

Pretty easy to say all that when you’re not the one who has to go out there and perform at the highest level…

Kiwis and Aussies will just borrow some kit suspension and an ECU and jump on a plane, throw on a pipe and a set of bars at the event and just pin it.

Really?  So who is NZ sending in 2026?

Sorry I don't have enough crayons to draw you a picture so you could understand, but we were never sending a team this year.

After listening to that shown I’m ordering some Renthal products for my Beta!

RJ Said last year on Pulp that his France trip ended up costing him 25 to. But that was due to him bringing his whole family (and probably in first class).

I understand that some riders want to bring their family members when you get a chance like this that no many will ever get.

We are talking about riders that are set for life and can afford it if they want to. But as some has said, it’s not up to AMA to foot the bill for the rider’s family.

Plenty of teams around the world are emptying their pockets just to bet the bikes and riders there while we got a US rider that earns top 3 in the MX world bitching about the cost to bring his mom and sister there.

I’m on board that the teams should get some financial help to get there, because there is teams that actually need it, but they need it to get there, not because their riders claim that they need a shit ton of money to race for their country.

Heck, when I was in the national enduro junior team, we held a one weekend training school for vet riders each year where the money from that went to pay to the shipping of the bikes to the ISDE and not one of us complained about it…

I know that.  So why are you saying the Kiwi's "will" just borrow some kit suspension and and ECU..." when they aren't even going?  And please, use some crayons if necessary to explain that.

I believe I remember Sexton saying a year or two back that he believes if you're selected and don't go, you should be out of the running the following year. Although I don't fully agree because sometimes things do come up, but at this point Deegan has found his way out of it multiple years in a row for one reason or another. At this point, I think the ship has sailed, he should not even be in consideration for the foreseeable future. These teams bend over backwards for their 'A' guy, if Deegan wanted to go, he would be there. If he does not want to go, that is totally fine, but don't make some lame excuse.

I gave you the down vote you deserved.  If Deegan said he just doesn't want to go, you, nor any of the other haters would think that's "totally fine"; you would shit on him for it.

It’s not that hard to work out Jimmy,  which one does Deegan get shit on for more?:

  1. Coming out early and honestly saying you’re not making yourself available for MXdN.
  2. Dodging MXdN for four years and making excuses, while being a self proclaimed patriot.
