They are planning on naming an aircraft carrier after this man.
Others of you that are students of WWII might know of this story.

What I am hearing in the news today? Say it ain't so.
hoping it's MSM bullshit.
The fact that it even remotely sounds legit says everything we need to know about our current administration…..
CVN 81
Here’s to a Clean Sweep Cruise for the USS Doris Miller - CVN 81.
Did you know the story about Doris Miller ? Because I did not. My neighbor told me about it today. He is a US flag waving army vet who served in Viet Nam. He's also an ex firefighter from Detroit, and is black. He never talks about race but this is sticking in his craw.

His grandfather was also a draft-dodger.
Could name it USS Liberty, in honor of the 34 sailors killed by Israel...

Didn’t know the story behind the name. Had heard of the intended name of CVN 81.
That's not the ship's name, that's its hull number.
I'll hold off on weighing in on the name change thing until it comes from actual verified sources. Three "anonymous" sources doesn't convince me of anything.
Oh, and @Reese95w, refresh my memory, what branch did you serve in?
Cripes TeamGreen you didn't know about Doris 'Dorri' Miller?
I've known his story since Childhood - that's the 60s
Virtually Every Movie, Documentary, Book about either US WW2 History, or more specifically Anything about the Pearl Harbour attack, I have ever encountered would have, (or in PH stories, be a key feature) His story. And, that he died, around 2 years later whilst serving.
I have to say it, and Trumpists / MAGAs can go me as much as you want, This Is A Disgusting Thing To Be Even Contemplated.
I've seen / read enough reportage to believe this latest disgraceful idea for party / self glorification of a draft dodger, by removing the name of a Hero, that gave his life for your country, is true.
My hope is, the Outrage from US Citizens, that so value their Military and Those that serve in it, for their country, persuades the GOP to Not do such a Vile thing.
But, I think this F**king Disgrace, will come to pass.
Doris Miller was portrayed in the 2001 Pearl Harbor movie.
...firing the anti-aircraft guns during the attack.
And “Tora! Tora! Tora!” Was a big part of the Pearl Harbor story.
Truth Social posted an AI pic of Trump in uniform between Patton and MacArthur. The lack of self-awareness is off the charts!
I will accept the appropriate amount of shaming for at least not remembering the story of Doris Miller. I may have heard it but the name did not stick with me. Anyway, what would cause me actual shame would be posting up common internet bullshit designed to do nothing but feed the rage. After I was told about it I went on the internet and saw stories by several sources including several Fox news sources that made it seem like a real thing. I didn't read every source because there was very little detail about it. They all pointed to CNN and unnamed sources. Now I'm not so sure. I don't have any trust in CNN's editorial integrity. It's also possible, and absolutely has happened, that it was a leak of the trial balloon variety, just to see the reaction before making any real announcement. If that's what it was, I hope they got their answer. And of course they would say that no such discussions ever took place. Fine with me. When it comes to internet, political, Hatfields & McCoys bullshit, I don't want to be the messenger. This forum has plenty of those.
Correct. I’d covered the hull ID versus ships name in my previous post. In the post you’re quoting, I’m stating I didn’t know the story of this hero.
I remember Cuba Gooding Jr. portraying this character in Pearl Harbor.
I didn’t know the actual history; but, thanks to borg…
Now, I do. This place is kinda awesome…sometimes.

It's a world-wide phenomenon, but it makes me puke every time I see a ship, bridge, airport, freeway.... whatever... named after a fucken politician.
Especially airports or navy ships. As if there aren't enough distinguished sailors and aviators to name them for, eh?
This is another political football. This sailor Doris did his job as a USN crewman, he "shot at enemy aircraft". What's so heroic about that?
By the way... what kind of fucken sadist names his strapping, muscular SON "Doris" ? Can you imagine how many fights he got into as a kid? And in the navy? (Cue Johnny Cash) 🤣
There were 102 ships in Pearl Harbor that day. How many sailors? And army and marines with acces to weapons? 50 000? 100 000?
How many of them shot at Japanese aircraft? Besides Lt's Welch and Taylor who took off in P-40s under attack and shot down 6 Jap aircraft? And Taylor was wounded by bullets exploding ih his cockpit?
1000? 2000? 20 000? Who knows?
But the galley hand who went topside and "fired a gun on his own initiative" gets the US's 2nd highest military award for bravery, and 80 years later an aircraft carrier named after him? Against the standing, if odious, convention of naming carriers after ex-Presidents of the USA?
It's almost as if there's some unnamed dynamic at work here.... whatever could that be?
Guaranteed none of y'all who "learned all about Doris in grade school" -- especially in countries on the other side of the world -- even know about the existence of George Welch or Ken Taylor, or the 2000, 5000, or 10 000 others hwo "shot at enemy aircraft" that day, eh?
Were you ever TAUGHT in school about the USN divers who saved so many trapped sailors that day?
Nothing against this man, even if he had a spinster aunt's name. ESPECIALLY!
He did his job, like any MAN would. Bummer that he later was KIA. But why do you think HE was singled out for glory?
His sense of humor? His singing voice? Any guesses?
If Trump wants a ship named after him, why not a construction barge? I mean, he IS a real estate guy, that's more appropriate, no?
Nothing demeaning about the humble derrick barge, I worked offshore on them 40 years ago, MANLY stuff!
What's unique about black ww2 heros is the era. Life wasn't exactly awesome for them in texas in the 30's and 40's with jim crow laws and the klu klux klan and qhatnot. They're hero's not because of America, they're hero's in spite of a very unwelcoming America.
Also, I downvoted you and wanted to say it because it's kinda chickenshit not to. I think your post sucks and is a bunch of tryhard nonsense.
President Stennis?
What do you think that the ‘unnamed dynamic’ is? Why do YOU think HE was singled out for glory?
I’m betting Reese was a rear admiral.
Pit Row
He says you are a petty officer, third class who just wants to be around lots of seamen.
Not bad 😂
He says you’re the originator of don’t ask don’t tell.
He says you have "don't ask, don't tell" as a tramp stamp😀
LMAO😂 the visual of that! 😁

Reese’s Feces have been boring the shit out of all of us for a while now. Poster boy for TDS.
