I'm pretty sure that Mike did not intend to steal the net. If it was my net, I would try to understand what happened and if I was given the explanation offered here, I'd let it go. I try not to be a Karen (or whatever the male equivalent is). I try to be a reasonable adult who has some understanding for minor indiscretions. To infer from that that I'm ok with stealing is nuts.

That said, I (and I’m guessing most of us), after receiving an explanation from Mike and evaluating the totality of the circumstances (apparently upstanding guy otherwise, daughter fishing with him, pole barn vs home/garage/etc) would have said “bro, if you’d have asked, I’d have given it to you. Please put it back when you’re done.” Or, if receiving the explanation after the police were involved, and seeing he left the net behind, we would have apologized for wasting LE’s time and declined going forward with charges.
The backlash is to a typical HOA Karen, with apparent connections, demanding charges. Shame on LE for not having the balls to tell her that she can demand all she wants, but this isn’t BK (ie your way right away). At most this should have been a report for documentation or maybe (maybe) a trespass. I wouldn’t have given her that. This reeks of deputies afraid to take a stand because she will call in her political clout and they will be reprimanded. There are times in police work that an officer needs to be able to say “no,” no matter how irate and/or connected the reporting party.

The Alessi family is an interesting dichotomy.
If I only knew what I got from the internet, they are a bunch of entitled pricks that will do anything to get their way, even at the expense of more deserving others.
If I only knew what I got from my friends that know them well, they are good people. Love kids, considerate of others. Tony is highly competent, very conscientious about his work.
I think it's safe to say the T-shirts put a microscope on them such that every mistake, poor judgment, and mental lapse they've ever done has been publicly documented. I absolutely don't condone some of the past behavior, then again if I'm really honest I don't condone some of my own past behavior or motives at times. So my point is just that our perception is formed by just the negative aspects of the family that gets reported. It's biased.
