Both 250 classes are weak Coenen and KdW leaving to go 450 has meant we are watching the best of the rest, and Deegan leaving to go 450 in AMA has done the same.

But when you see the likes of Carson Mumford on the box, against maybe 10 riders who should be beating him , it looks like they are all underperforming, and they are. Just lots of mediocrity and lack of consistency everywhere.

But MX250 is better at the front right now, even if it is weaker down the order, but EMX250 guys rock up and run in the top 10 at Southwick.

The whole sport is becoming less competitive due to declining numbers, wherever you are from, but the MXGP format doesnt suffer from the 'making up the numbers' problem.

So, Mumford has been really good this summer and it culminated in his 3rd place moto finish this weekend. But, are his results "inflated" by the lack of depth in the US 250 class? I'm starting to think so. I don't think Mumford has taken any major steps forward in his riding compared to when he filled in for PC in 2023. Look at this list of riders from Budds Creek in 2023. SO much more talent.

And i'm not bagging on Mumford, his riding has been really good this summer and i'm super happy for him. But i think he is a great example of the 250 class being relatively speaking weak and for the first time ever (in modern history) the top MX2 riders are probably better.

You don’t think he’s taken any major steps forward?  This thread is delusional.

We have like 6 dudes who can win any weekend…kitchen, Shimoda and Davies are flying.  Going extremely fast.  Hymas is capable of elite speed.  juju is capable of elite speed.

I don’t know how you are all looking at that list of names and being like “field sucks.  Slow.  Easy wins” haha by what standard

Dont get me wrong, i am a Mumford fan, he delivered on what should be a bike that should be nowhere near  the podium, if the rest of the riders on better kit were doing what they should be on it. No disrespect to AEO at all, but its a shop team, and its a good bike, clearly.

The best thing he could do now is go 450 with the momentum he has, what can he do on a 250 that he hasnt already done?

Going 450 would be the worst thing he could do now. It would kill all his momentum he finally has and so far he has done nothing as a pro on a 250 due to very bad lack and injuries.

I don't think his pure pace is much better today compared to 2023. I would say that he is more consistent, and i guess you could say that is an major improvement. But i would go back to my base argument that the field is not as deep and good as it historically has been, which makes it "easier" to be consistent for a good rider.

Whats he going to achieve, not win half an SX series, and get the odd podium outdoors.

Meanwhile Factory Kawasaki is Garrett Marchbanks, who is killing it, and Cornelius Tondel , who cant get a ride here in Europe.

Be brave, be the next Weston Peick.

I am struggling to remember the last time one led a lap?

And that isnt bait..  i cant even think of who it might be.  I cant remember one this year, Tomac got crocked at round 1, Deegan hasnt, Chase is AWOL.

I guess we are digging through lap charts. I have visions of AP leading somewhere, but cant think where.

He led for like a corner and a half. Never a lap I don’t think.

Then Jett remembered to go, and left him like a bad habit.

"am struggling to remember the last time one led a lap?"

Sexton won an overall (Washougal) and 2 or 3 motos last year, Tomac led laps and won a moto also.

So Sexton last year at Ironman was the last one.

Mailin said today in the MX2 qualifying race that every rider in the top 5 in MX2 class could have gone 1-1 in the states and their 6th place rider could have won a moto. I thought that was a bit much. Especially since only 3 guys win in MX2 for the most part. What does Vital say?

Eh, doesn’t mean anything

I want to play the Malin game.

Hey Paul, you know that guy Guillem Farres who's out front in MX2? He got on a Star bike and rode around in 8th in the U.S.  Guess the U.S. has deeper talent.

Don't take the bait, it's narrative control.

If only there was a race once per year where the best racers of each country could compete and settle this endless discussion Smile

As for the original query. I think Malin is exaggerating a bit. Top three, sure.  Top five?  I don’t agree.

So does that mean that his performance isnt as good because the bike is better?

They lease motors from KTM then, Weege calls it a privateer team, but it isnt really.

But even so , is the bike as good as a PC bike or Star?

The one thing I don't get about what Malin said was why would you immediate try and belittle the international achievements of your current red plate holder mid title battle.

Rather than say these truly are the best in the world look what he did, his tone was more of oh that was no big deal anyone can do that.

Was definitely a weird way to go about talking about Sacha's Southwick win.

Nobody is saying the field sucks or anybody is slow. The point being made is riders in the Euro circus are faster 250 riders as of now.

But is it really that deep? Just to play devil's advocate:

By my reckoning there's about five guys in that 250 class who ended being regular front runners in 450 outdoors, and two of those were from the GPs. So three locally developed riders, but only one won a premiership mx title.

Can anyone say with any certainty that there's not three riders in the current 250 class that could end up being premier class winners in the next ten- fifteen years? Especially if you consider that 250 success doesn't equal 450 success e.g. the two top riders in that list weren't the best two 450 guys.

Perspective is everything with the benefit of hindsight.

Definitely not knocking on the kids performance that was super awesome just stating that the bike is not a shop built bike and trusting weege he's just a mouthpiece you can't really go off what he says.

7 out of that top 15 won 450 outdoor races. 2 won multiple outdoor 450 titles. One had the one of the most dominant seasons ever. Another one sits top 5 in all time 450 wins. Another one was 3 times runner up. No I don't think there's 7 future 450 race winners in the current class but that's just me
