I have a excellent recommendation… “12 angry men” It’s from 1957 a black and white, Henry Fonda is the lead actor and the film is loaded with familiar actors when they were young Jack Klugman is in it also. My hope with this topic is for members here to give some old movie recommendations if you have any.
One that I always thought deserved a lot more attention than it got was "The Presidents Analyst" starring James Coburn and Godfrey Cambridge . Made in 1967 it has cult status. Coburn plays the Psychoanalyst of the then time President, it's hilarious.
Airplane, still a favorite if you like that type of comedy ans of course Blazing Saddles
Both of these Jimmy Stewart movies are really good.
It’s a mad mad mad mad world

I’d like to extend this laurel and hardy handshake…
The wife and I went through a phase where we watched a bunch of old Sidney Poitier movies. He was a heck of an actor. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001627/
To kill a mockingbird ! From 1962 I believe.
The Flight of The Phoenix. The original 1965 version with James Stewart, Richard Attenborough and Hardy Kruger.
African Queen, Bridge over the river Kwai, so many more....
Papillion starring Steve Mcqueen and Dustin Hoffman is from 1973.
1930 Howard Hughes movie HELL’s ANGELS. Unreal aerial dogfighting scenes for its time.
Casablanca. The rapid fire delivery and subtle humor is fantastic.
Big +1. Many movies are overrated imo, but Casblanca is suuuuper good. I love all the characters and undertones between them.
Been a while since I've seen it, but OP's recommendation 12 Angry Men was a good one.
Soylent Green was really good, though kind of borderline for "old" I guess.
Cool Hand Look is excellent. I can watch that one a thousand times over like Casablanca.
Of the big classics, Citizen Kane was good, Rear Window was good, though I personally don't rank them quite as high as they're known for.
Ohh Lawrence of Arabia, that's great too.
The biggest disappointment for me was Gone With The Wind. It's endless hours of....okay they're pieces of shit....okay they suffered some hard times and maybe they're coming around oh nope they're still pieces of shit.....okay for sure this time they're going to change nope still pieces of shit. And I guess the big gotcha is supposed to be at the very end on their death bed they finally learn, but you literally have no reason to think anything would be different since you've been fooled like ten times by this point. It's well made and the acting is great, but there does not seem to be one iota of character development....fuck that movie.
When I was a boy in the late 70's on Saturdays they would show an old movie on one of the local TV stations, 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Every year they would show The African Queen.
The leach scene! Humphrey Bogart has to get out and push the boat through a shallow spot and when he gets back in the boat he's covered in leaches. Bleh!
Every time i wade around a muddy, murky pond i think of that. 😬
I remember watching this with my mom. Awesome movie.
I especially like the Anthony Quinn version of The hunchback of Notre Dame
My dad loved Casablanca and African Queen. Another great one he always watched is Secondhand Lions. I recently watched a bunch of old Clint Eastwood movies on YouTube to fall asleep to like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Fist full of Dollars, For a few Dollars More etc. I've seen them all many times but its been a long time except Unforgiven that is in my regular rotation.
Yeah, the plot twist and ending are fantastic--watching it now it still makes the hair on my neck stand up. James Stewart is incredible. Well, all of the actors are. It's one of those movies you could never hope to re-make which is why that 2004 version with Dennis Quaid (who is one of my favorite actors) was so disappointing. I remember my mom and dad went to the see the original when it came out in theaters in 1965. They came home and told me about it and I couldn't wait to watch it. Unfortunately, it was rated PG or something and since I was 8 at the time I had to wait two years for it to make it to TV on ABC!
Pit Row
Another great Hitchcock movie with Jimmy Stewart is Rope from the late 40s. It was shot with a single camera in one take.
@FLmxer, in my opinion, Unforgiven is the greatest western movie ever made.
North By North West 👍
Once Upon a Time in the West, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Great Escape, Kelly's Heroes, Where Eagles Dare, The Dirty Dozen, Patton, The French Connection, Charade, Serpico, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, ...
Such an awesome thread and so many rad movies mentioned.
“The Outlaw Josey Wales” would like to have a word…
The Original The Fly with Vincent Price is really good.
I've been doing a run of all the old Clint Eastwood westerns. Also, The Eagle has Landed, The Dirty Dozen and Wild Geese.
We've just had dinner and I need a quick shower then we are gonna watch Soldier Blue...an old classic
Some great movies mentioned above and I'll be check them out.
Great post Kenny.
Help Meeeee, Helllp Meeeeeee.
It takes a while to get that out of my mind after I see it again.
Mind you, the 2nd(?) version with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis is pretty good, too.
Comedy: Airplane, Naked Gun
Action: Bullitt
I agree , they are both excellent movies.💯
An American Werewolf in London (depends on what you mean by old).
The Lion in Winter
Gone with The Wind - not overly interested in the story (though to be fair it isn't just a dumb romance either) but Iv'e never seen a film that made me feel like I was witnessesing civil war America quite like this one - some of the scenes are just crazy, obviously no cgi in sight...
The Forbidden Planet
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the Donald Sutherland one - free on youtube at the moment).
Not old but.... Zodiac (2007) - also currently free on youtube.
I saw two westerns that I haven’t seen in 50yrs. Rooster Cogburn and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I had forgotten how good those movies were. Especially compared to today’s movies with CGI.
